[Shopping for Tots: Emes and Eku (MCDRaddictedrose)]

Amyla Edana
"Yana, you silly goose, stop wiggling!" Amyla exclaimed with a soft laugh as she strode into the kids' clothing store. She didn't usually enjoy shopping, but it had to be done every now and then. Since Aiodhan was busy carrying for a high-maintenance Caleb, she had decided to take Yana out for a necessary shopping trip.

Yana, however, wanted to be walking and was not pleased about being carried. She had been squirming and making noises of displeasure since Amyla lifted her out of her carseat and began walking into the store. As soon as she saw the abundance of clothes, though, the girl froze, watching all of the clothing racks as they strode by. Her mismatched eyes grew wide, and she held out a hand to point at a nice-looking blue dress. "Ooooh!" she declared, looking disappointed as Amyla headed out toward the shirts and pants.

"You need clothes with more freedom, dear. You're constantly on the go," her mother chuckled, ruffling through racks of shirts on hangars.

A young man, not over 25, sighed and ran a hand through his bright red hair. Blank white eyes followed the movements of a toddler in paint-stained clothes flying crazily through the aisles.

"Daddymommydaddy look at all these!!!" said toddler exclaimed happily, turning around to face his father. "Daaaaaddy, whe'e Mommy and E-u?"

A shorter adult ran up to 'Daddy' and glared at him as they held another toddler, this one without wings. "Orous. Get your son under control." This statement was spoken dark, giving the indication that it would be best not to let the new person shut the loud toddler up themself.

The winged toddler grinned a toothy grin and flew up to the two newcomers. "Hiii, Mommy and E-u~!"

'Mommy' gave an annoyed sigh and silently handed the wingless toddler to Orous. "I'm getting a drink..." she muttered darkly, nearly stomping out of the store.

Orous looked at his flying son in amusement. "Emes, you know that if you keep spilling paint, we will have to keep buying new clothes..."

This logic was lost on Emes, however, as he began playing with his sleeping brother's ears.

Amyla Edana
Amyla came up short as a paint-covered something flew past her as she was emerging from an aisle. After a momentary pause, she stepped forward to look about for the crazy flier, figuring it was some small child escaped from their parent. She rounded a corner and came face to face with the painted ... child. Yes, it was a child. She had no idea who the child was, but the parent looked vaguely familiar.

Yana, however, had no idea who these strangers were. After a few moments of watching, though, she deemed them safe and waved to them, uttering a slurred 'Hello' of greeting. The toddler tilted her head to one side, bemused as to why the one boy had paint on himself. That sort of decoration was supposed to go on paper, wasn't it?

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes turned instantly to the 'hello' and zipped over to the fellow toddler. "Hiiii!" he exclaimed happily, grinning like mad. "I'm Emes! My twin's Eku, bu' he sleeps a lot." Emes perched on the cart like a giant bird, his wings partially curled up. "Wanna meet him?"

Orous raised an eyebrow as he heard his son chatter away. An eyebrow rose as he saw the new victims. Pretending not to recognize the mother, he walked over calmly to his winged son.

Amyla Edana
Yana, her eyes trying to track the toddler's mouth as it moved, looked adorably confused. Her eyes were wide and rather lost-looking, and Amyla had to chuckle at her confusion.

"She can't hear you," the woman explained to the other toddler, not sure how to communicate that Yana could only read lips when a person spoke slowly. She gently touched Yana's shoulder and got her attention before carefully spelling out E-M-E-S with her free hand.

Yana processed the letters and then glanced back at Emes. "Eeeeeeeeeesss?" she said hesitantly, tilting her head to one side.

Happy at the effort Yana was making to speech, Amyla turned her gaze to the approaching parent and second twin. Some portion of her mind was nagging at her to recognize this other person, but she couldn't come up with a name. Having kids wreaked havoc on the memory. "Cute boy you have. I'm guessing he likes paint?" she asked with a wry grin, noting Emes' 'decoration'.

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes tilted his head, some hair falling into his face as he did so. "She can't hear? Is tha' li' Eku not talking?" His attention was drawn back to the one his age. "Nuh-uh. has 'n M. E-mus." For once in talking, he spoke slowly, as if she would hear him if he spoke slower.

Orous smiled politely. "Actually, this is the son who likes paint." He held up Eku, who blearily opened a single eye. Along with that reaction, his two fuzzy, pink-stained ears rose up a little. "The other just likes to practice abstract tattoo designs." He blinked for a moment as he looked at her. "Have I seen you before?" he asked slowly, as if remembering something from far away.

Amyla Edana
Amyla smiled faintly. "I wish it was like that. But she'll never hear anything, ever," the woman said quietly, watching the toddlers interact. Oh, if only Yana could just turn her hearing back on. It'd be magnificent, but then again... she wouldn't be Yana.

Yana looked confused still, but she made a genuine attempt. "Eeeeehuuss. Eeeeeehhuuuuuuuuuuus," she drawled out, blinking as she noticed his mouth moving more slowly. Well, that was an improvement, even if she still couldn't get his name right. Uttering a frown, she opted for spelling out the boy's name with her hand, quickly making the appropriate signs for the letters. That, she could do.

At the sight of the two painted ears, Amyla had to grin. That was simply too cute, albeit quite messy. "Well, maybe you have two budding artists... or interior designers," she chuckled, wishing she had one semi-artistic child among her lot of offspring. No such luck there, though. At his question, she nodded an affirmative. "Yes, I believe so, though I'm afraid my memory fails me again. Having kids does that to you, I've noticed. I'm Amyla, and this is my daughter, Yana."

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes focused his attention on Yana. "Nuh, Emus. E-MUS. Wi' an eM. Like Mom. And Money and Mark and other stuff." The head was tilted again when she started making hand gestures. "What are dos?"

Orous smiled politely, mouth firmly closed. "Oh, I think Emes has already started with interior design." Eku was the one more likely to be an actual artist. "My name is Orouborous, although many simly call me Orous. I prefer that, as it is much easier."

Emes looked up from Yana. He knew what introductions sounded like! "An' I'm Emes an' my twin's Eku an' Mommy's Drana!" the mix finished happily.

Amyla Edana
While Amyla longed to intervene on Yana's behalf, she conceded that the girl was simply going to have to learn to deal with this serious communication barrier. As a result, she let the little toddler puzzle the issue out, while she processed the introductions. "Orous... I do remember you. I believe I saw you before, and your mate was with you. Mine was with me as well, if my memory serves me correctly," she added, trying to cast her mind back that far. Oh dear. That had been ages ago. "Your twins are adorable. How old are they?"

"Sssssiiiiiiiiiiii," Yana said carefully, very slowly spelling out Emes' name with her hand as she tried to make him understand the concept of 'speaking' with one's hands. She frowned briefly at the other toddler, trying to figure out how exactly to copy his speech. "Eeeeehuuuuusss?" She frowned. No, that wasn't how he made that sound. How frustrating.

MCDRaddictedrose
Orous pretended to think back to when he first saw her and her mate. "Ah, I think I remember. Another half-dragon, was he?"

Emes blinked and tilted his head. "What are you doing with your hands?" he asked slowly, in the same way he did when he first said his name.

Eku climbed out of Orous's arms and sat down in the cart, underneath Emes. The mute child gave a shy wave to Yana with one hand and gripped his brother's marvoulous tail with the other.

The father paused to think about how old his children really were. "Well, what age do children normally beguin to speak?" Orous asked slowly. Emes was speaking rather fluently, but Eku had yet to do anything but squeak...

Amyla Edana
Amyla nodded, sighing. "Yes, that's him. He is... ahhh... different." That was, perhaps, the understatement of the millenium.

Yana looked frustrated for a moment. It was obvious that he had no idea how to sign, and she couldn't speak to communicate to him. Well, she couldn't speak enough to adequately communicate, was more accurate. She watched the other twin for a moment as he climbed into the cart. She smiled and waved back at him and then turned back to his brother, determined to find someway to cross this difficult chasm. "Yannnna," she articulated carefully before spelling out the letters with one hand and then pointing to herself. "Yana."

After giving her daughter a look of approval (and sending a silent prayer of thanks to whatever gods there were), Amyla had to think about the inquiry. How old were kids when they started to speak? "Most start when they are less than a year old, but it's mainly babble plus a few coherent words. That depends on the child, though. Boys usually speak later, and sometimes, the kids just don't speak until late. Yana is really behind in speaking orally, though she speaks very fluently with her hands."

MCDRaddictedrose
Orous smiled. "I believe I understand..." Some things were just unexplainable.

Eku studied the girl intently, especially her hands. He barely touched her to get her attention, then mimicked the hand signs she made and pointed to her. The mute made the handsigns he had seen her make earlier with Emes, pointed to his brother, and tilted his head.

Orous gave a small smile as he ran his toungue over his fangs. "I can see that. However, as I think you may have experienced firsthand, Emes is able to make coherent sentances. Do you believe that his twin brother should be able to?"

Amyla Edana
Yana watched Eku for a moment as he repeated the handsigns. When he pointed at her, she nodded vigorously. "Yaaaanaaa!" she said, pointing at herself and repeating her handsigns to spell out her name. When he spelled out his brother's name, her grin broadened, and she nodded again. "Eeeeehhhuuus!" she affirmed, spelling out E-M-E-S with her hands.

Amyla pursed her lips. This was tough territory, and she was no child psychologist. "Well, as a doctor, I can tell you this much: there is a generally accepted age by which a child should be able to communicate orally. If he is this far behind his brother, then I'd say there is a good medical or psychological reason that he isn't talking. And I have to say, I don't think it's a learning disability," she added, watching the way Eku was able to pick up the handsigns. "I'd be looking at either a problem with his larynx or some kind of error in a neural connection in his brain. But then again, I'm just an ER doctor and a mother; that's really a question for a specialist," she added. She did have to grin at the way that Yana and Eku seemed to find common ground to 'converse' on. That was a step in the right direction. "If he can't speak aloud, try sign language. He seems to be picking it up already."

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes tilted his head, watching them. What are you doing?

Eku looked up at his brother. This, he signed 'Yana', is her name. This, here he signed 'Emes', is your name. I don't think she can hear herself or others for some reason. He looked back at Yana. Ask her what my name is.

Emes tapped Yana to get her attention. "What's the hands for Eku?" he asked slowly, seeing that if he spoke slowly, she knew what he was saying.

Orous smiled sheepishly and ran a hand though his hair. "I'm sorry, I doubt it would be a learning disability. I am simply a bit concerned..." his voice tapered off as he began to think. "Would not having a need to speak decrease the swiftness of learning it?" he asked, eyes on his two sons.

Amyla Edana
Yana glanced back and forth between the two brothers, sensing that there was some sort of communication going on that she had no knowledge of. Whatever it was, Emes was now trying to get her attention, and she turned her gaze to him, watching as his mouth moved. Eku... that was a new name. She wasn't entirely sure how to spell it, but she decided to go with the simplest route anyway. She raised her right hand and very slowly spelled out E-K-U. Afterward, she pointed at the mute twin and made a noise of inquiry, asking if that was, indeed, his name.

Nodding in understanding, Amyla had to admit she knew where the other parent stood. She had been wondering about Yana before, herself. "I understand. Aiodhan and I were very worried when Yana wasn't speaking or responding to noises around her. It's a bit scary at first." At his question, she had to think for another moment. "I suppose so. If he has alternate means of making himself understood, he might find it unnecessary to speak. Yana was like that at first until she realized that not everyone could sign."

MCDRaddictedrose
Eku nodded slowly, making the hand signs and pointing to himself. That meaned his name, hopefully. And that is my name. I think.

Emes rocked back and forth on the edge of the cart, trying to think. "E-u, 'm boree. Y dun we play something with-" here he made the hand sign for Yana, not mastering it as Eku had done, but close enough. Mostly.

Brother, I don't know how to hand-speak anything except three names.

"I see..." Orous commented. He glanced at the three children out of habit. "I think Eku might have discovered something else to do besides draw. Good thing, maybe they won't need 5 baths a day now."

Amyla Edana
Yana nodded vigorously, letting slip a giggle that she couldn't even hear. To have someone be able to communicate with her in her own language was unbelievably exciting. She saw the way Emes was rocking back and forth, and she frowned for a moment. Maybe he was restless? Or bored... yes, bored. Probably bored. What were they in this store for anyway? Ah yes... clothes! She tugged gently on her mother's sleeve and made the handsigns for 'down' and 'please', grinning broadly when Amyla nodded and set her on the ground. She glanced up at the boys and made the sign for 'clothes' before pointing at her own shirt, shorts, and shoes.

Still keeping a close eye on her daughter, Amyla had to chuckle at the image of bathing the two male toddlers that many times in a single day. "I imagine that'd get tiring after awhile, having to keep cleaning them. Him being able to sign could help," she added, overjoyed that Yana was speaking with children her own age, even if it was only with her hands.

MCDRaddictedrose
Eku tilted his head as he watched Yana carefully, trying to figure out what her hands were saying. When she made that sign, her mother put her on the floor. She said floor... or ground....or down. Eku then watched her other signing. Handing for...um, cloth?

Emes grinned. He was finally catching on. Clothes, silly brother. Emes jumped into the cart and grabbed his brother, ignoring the silent yelp of disapprovel. With a bit of effort, the winged toddler managed to get them both over the side of the cart and onto the floor.

Orous found himself smiling at his sons' antics. "I was meaning that he would be more involved with learning this, the less time he would spend with paints." He didn't mention that the twins hated water. Maybe they had inherited too many things from Drana...

Amyla Edana
Yana grinned as the two boys made their way to the ground, swishing her spiked tail about behind her. She waited until they were safely on the floor before she made a beckoning gesture and skipped over to a nearby clothing rack, pushing the clothes about in search of something bright, preferably blue in color. Blue was good. "Lluuuuuuuu?" she inquired at the other toddlers, turning to face them whilst pointing at a blue shirt hung on a hanger.

"Ahhh, I see," Amyla chuckled, watching the three toddlers closely. She didn't think Yana would stray far, but it was better to be safe than sorry. Watching a toddler was easier than trying to find one. "Well, if he ever needs someone to practice with, I'm sure Yana would love that. Ohhh, that reminds me... I promised to take her to the pool at some point," she added, muttering the last bit to herself. She had to remember that; she'd promised the toddler a trip to the swimming pool.

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes grinned and followed, walking steadly over to where she was. Eku, on the other hand, was still clutching his brother's neck. Besides, he couldn't walk well yet.

Emes tilted his head and looked at the shirt. "Blu? Nah, I li' bla' besser. Black. Li' dis." He grabbed one of the black chunks of his hair as an example.

Orous nodded, looking around the store. He could hear heartbeats, after all. He didn't need to watch them. Even though their hearts were no longer needed, they would beat for about half a century. "Eku usually only talks to his brother, so this is slightly...There's a pool around here?" The last question was asked in mild surprise. He did not know of such a pool.

Amyla Edana
Yana was at first perplexed by the way he tugged at his hair, but after a moment, it became apparent that Emes was naming another color. She watched his lips closely but couldn't figure out how to mimic the sound. She glanced at his hair and shrugged casually before slowly padding over to the next clothing rack. Her eyes danced with glee as she spied a bright green shirt, and she pointed to it as well. "Yeeeeeeee."

"Maybe he's just a little shy," Amyla mused, smiling a bit in the toddlers' direction. They were quite cute, the two boys, even being so different. She looked surprised at Orous' question but nodded an affirmative nonetheless. "Yes, there is a public, indoor pool not too far from here. I don't take the kids there often, but Yana has never been. I promised her we'd go sometime," she said by way of explanation. It was difficult to explain how a part bird, part dragon, mostly human child would like water, but... well, Yana was Yana like that.

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes nodded once. "Green's okay. I don't like bright colors much, though." He needed to practice speaking properly again.

Eku looked around at the clothes, trying to find something good. He reached out and grabbed a red shirt. This any good?

Emes looked at the shirt. I don't know... "I wanna eat it."

Eku nodded. He knew the feeling, too. But it's a shirt.

Orous smiled as an evil tint came into his eyes. "Hmm. I believe I shall have to try that sometime. Where is it?" in a barely noticable motion, he began rocking slightly back and forth.

Amyla Edana
Yana couldn't quite understand the whole statement about 'eating' the shirt. She looked confused for a moment and then made a casual shrug and then glanced at the red shirt. It was bright. Yes, it was bright. She grinned for a moment and then skipped a few more steps, glancing up at this new clothing rack. "Ooooh!" she said aloud, tugging cheerfully on the denim jumper hanging on the hanger. She glanced back at the boys and pointed at it.

Amyla grinned at Yana. Poor dear. The little girl toddler didn't understand that boys generally didn't wear jumpers. "Ahh... it's about half a mile down this road, I think. It's pretty well labelled, so you can't miss it," she added, a bit bemused by the evil glint in Orous' eyes. What was he up to?

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes and Eku both looked at her, the shirt somehow in both their mouths. "Ah'w go ge' eh," Emes replied with a mouthful of fabric. He spit the shirt out and flew up to where the jumper was, tossing it down before perching on the metal bar. "What is it?"

Eku picked up the jumper and turned it over, the red shirt still in his mouth. It's...... I don't know. It's like a single pant leg.

Orous smirked. "Your information is appreciated." His mind was already plotting all sorts of evil deeds that involved manipulation and getting Drana extremely mad. "Well, she has such excellent timing..." he muttered under his breath.

Amyla Edana
Yana looked appropriately shocked at the site of the two boys trying to eat the shirt. She made a noise of inquiry, her mismatched eyes very, very wide. Why were they eating it?? It was to be worn, not eaten! She grinned when Emes tossed down the jumper, watching as Eku turned it over. She waved him off and then held it up to herself, liking the way it buttoned near her shoulders. It looked nice. Long skirt, down past her knees, with straps that would go down past her shoulders. She liked it. It was nice!

"You're welcome," Amyla said, more than a little disturbed by the smirk. It sort of bothered her, and she didn't even want to try to translate what he was muttering about. Oh well. Maybe it was time for a new subject. "Do you have any other children besides these two?"

MCDRaddictedrose
Eku tilted his head as he watched how one was supposed to wear a jumper. Interesting. It was now he realized that he had a shirt in his moth, which he quickly spit out. He looked around for more different types of clothes.

Orous smiled a more normal smile and shook his head. "I think that two are enough, don't you agree, Drana?"

The shorter person that had origionally entered the store with Orous and the twins stepped from behind him and frowned. "Why can't I sneak up on you?"

Orous smiled patiently. "You forgot I can hear heartbeats."

Drana frowned, then turned to Amyla. "Hey....you're that one girl, aren't ya?"

Orous rolled his eyes at his mate's speech. "Spoken eloquently as always."

Amyla Edana
Looking very, very pleased with her find, Yana toddled over to her mother and held up the jumper. When Amyla accepted the article of clothing with a laugh, the toddler grinned and then turned around and padded away to find something else. She passed a large shelf of jeans and peered at it. "Ehuuuuu? Eeeehhhussss?" she inquired at the boys, pointing at the jeans.

Amyla, looping the jumper over her arm and still chuckling over Yana's clothing search, looked up in surprise at Drana's entrance. "Ahh, hello. Yes, I do believe we've met before," she said, unable to be in the least bit offended by the other female's abrupt speech. "And I'm complimented. Most people don't think I'm that young!" she added cheerfully.

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes tilted his head at the jeans and swooped down, imitating a hawk. He played with them a little before dropping them.

Eku paid no attention at all. Really, he knew what jeans were. He looked around and climbed up the clothing rack and investigated the items on there, which was a sales rack with a large variety of things.

Drana shrugged. "So, where are the twins?" Her voice sounded light, but at least Orous could tell that he better have an answer ASAP.

Orous just shrugged. "Eku's on a clothes rack and Emes is on the ground about 5 feet away."

Amyla Edana
The boys didn't seem interested in the jeans, and Yana was only marginally intrigued. She shrugged her tiny shoulders and toddled on, watching as Eku climbed up a clothing rack. Content just to grab what she could reach, she paged through one rack, grinning broadly as she found a short-sleeved blue shirt, button-up. Yes, now that was intriguing. Now... how to get it off...

Amyla chuckled as she watched the toddlers. They were so adorable.

MCDRaddictedrose
Emes, bored already, flew up again and looked around. When he saw his prey, his wings tilted down, and he sped like a speeding flying thing into his target.

Who gave a silent yelp and fell off the clothes rack.

Orous sighed as he heard Emes dive-bomb Eku. Those two were either going to be inseperable or hate each other when they got older...

Drana sipped happily on her coffee drink thing. She had no idea what it was, but it was a warm beverage, so she didn't care.

Amyla Edana
Amyla grinned as one boy dive-bombed the other. Ahhh, that reminded her of her own little boy. Thank goodness he wasn't fully mobile yet. She saw Yana struggling to get a blue shirt off the rack, and she went over to her daughter, carefully taking the shirt off the rack and hanging it over her arm with he jumper. When Yana looked up at her, Amyla spelled D-R-E-S-S with her free hand, grinning down at the girl.

Yana understood immediately and skipped a ways down the aisle until she reached a rack full of dresses. She squeaked happily and began rifling through them all, stopping when she found one dress that was a deep, dark shade of purple. She tugged once, and it came down, hanger and all. She picked it up in both hands and held it up to investigate, eyes wide with wonder. Pretty...

MCDRaddictedrose
Eku was the first one to notice what Yana had, and what was it? He walked over on all fours to the girl, tapped her lightly, and tilted his head. Whatever it was, it was pretty.

Emes completely missed the dark purple dress, as he was currently playing the 'Lets-hide-Mommy's-drink' game.

Amyla Edana
Yana glanced down at Eku and made a chuffing noise, noting that he was looking at the dress in her hands. She removed one hand from the dress and spelled out 'dress' before gesturing at the purple article of clothing. She grinned and stroked the fabric, liking the way it felt. It was so pretty.

Amyla, meanwhile, was not sure whether to laugh or find a dress of a more appropriate color for Yana. Maybe it was better to let the girl choose, after all.

MCDRaddictedrose
Eku imitated the hand sign for 'dress' and creeped closer to the purple article of clothing. He reached a hand out to it as well, trying to think of what it was made of. He tilted his head, tapped Yana, and signed 'Yana Dress'.

Orous smiled sadly and shook his head as he watched Emes zip out of the store holding a coffee drink. Drana not being far behind. Oh, how I love my messed-up family...

Amyla Edana
Yana watched him spell out the words and nodded. If he was trying to indicate that the dress was in her possession, then he was, in fact, correct. It was currently hers. She petted the dress again and then grinned up at Eku. It was pretty, yes. He had to agree with that.

Amyla raised an eyebrow as Emes and Drana disappeared out of the store. Oh dear. Well, that wasn't good. She cast a glance at Orous and then shrugged, striding a bit closer to the two remaining toddlers and the purple dress.

MCDRaddictedrose
If it was possible for a 3-year-old to sigh, then that's exactly what Eku did. He never had much of a backbone, so when she claimed the pretty dress, he didn't object. Instead, he looked at the rack of dresses, trying to find another pretty one, maybe one even prettier. Wouldn't that be good!

Orous, too, was watching the two toddlers. He wasn't concerned about a squabble; he knew that Eku didn't have enough of a spine to stand up for himself.

Amyla Edana
Yana continued to pat the dress for several more minutes, humming in a rather off-tune fashion. She realized, after a beat, that Eku was looking elsewhere, and she followed his gaze to the rack of dresses. She shrugged and was about to turn back when something caught her eye.

Something... blue.

Entranced, Yana instantly dropped the purple dress and padded slowly over to the rack, shoving the other dresses aside until she saw the dress in all of its bright blue, rhinestone-studded glory, complete with a ribbon sash. Oh yes. Perfection.

Amyla's shoulders shook with barely-contained mirth. Oh, what a strange child she had.

MCDRaddictedrose
Eku jumped back a few inches at the sudden movement. When he saw her go for the not as pretty blue dress, he was surprised at first. Why would she want an uglier dress? And then, the great answer clicked in Eku's brain: That meant the purple dress was hi-is~! He scampered over to the disregaurded piece of clothing and snatched it up before Yana could realize her mistake.

Orous merely smiled and shook his head. These children never cease to amuse me... especially when they snitch a drink and fly off with it.

Amyla Edana
Yana was too entranced by the blue-ness to care about the purple dress any longer. She stroked her new find once or twice and then glanced at her mother before making the sign for 'please'.

Amyla nodded and went over to free the dress from the rack, eliciting a happy giggle and a dance from Yana. Well, I think we can call this trip a success... the woman thought, watching the excitement in her daughter's eyes. She then glanced over at Orous. "Are you going to let him wear that?" she asked curiously, nodding her head at the boy and the purple dress.

Thoroughly content now, Yana wandered back over to Eku to watch him and his new possession. She quickly signed 'Eku dress'. Yes, it was, indeed, his dress now. She didn't care; she had a prettier one. And it was blue... with shinies!

MCDRaddictedrose
Orous merely shrugged as he watched Eku madly clutch his new clothing item. "If he wants it," Orous began to reason, struggling not to laugh, "and he will wear it, than I see no reason not to."

Eku looked up and grinned widely at Yana, revealing his four pointed canines for the first time.

Orous shook his head, still smiling, as he picked Eku up. "Well, shall we find something for your older brother as well?"

Amyla Edana
Amyla resisted the urge to giggle. "I'm sure he'll look lovely," she said, not able to keep the grin off her face. Toddlers were so cute. Hellions, usually... but always cute. She looked down at the articles of clothing draped over her arm and then at her own daughter. Well... did they need anything else?

Yana, completely unperturbed by Eku's sharp teeth, grinned right back and fluttered her mismatched wings. "Ehuuuuu... esssssss," she said, articulating 'Eku' and 'dress' as best she could. He did have a fine dress now. It wasn't as fine as hers, but it would do. "Eeehussss essss?" she inquired, wondering if the other brother needed one as well. She tilted her head back as Orous picked up the other toddler, and she looked thoughtful for a moment. Then she promptly toddled back to the clothing rack and rifled through it for a moment, re-emerging with a black, velvet dress held high in both hands. "Ehhuuus esss!"

MCDRaddictedrose
Eku grinned widely again as he clapped his hands, nodded repeatedly. Sogning 'Emes Dress', he crawled down Orous and took the black velvet dress carefully from Yana. Making sure both dresses were secure, he climbed back up Orous.

Orous managed to smile with his mouth closed. "I'm sure they will..." he replied, his voice unsteady as he tried not to laugh. "I do believe that's enough shopping for today..."

Amyla Edana
Feeling quite sophisticated in her talented matching of outfits and dresses, Yana held her head high and watched Eku climb back to his father. Oh yes. She was talented, no doubts there. Grinning from ear to ear, the little girl sidled up alongside her mother, happily waving her tail about behind her.

"I concur," Amyla said, still trying hard not to laugh. She let slip a cough to hide her giggle before she was able to maintain control of herself. "I think Yana has picked out enough for now. It was wonderful to see you again, Orous, as well as to meet your kids. If he needs signing company, I'm sure Yana would love to see him again," she said, using her free hand to gesture at Eku and his dresses. Oh, he was too cute.

My little girl is growing up! Yana grew again, and she is such a beautiful child. She is growing up to be so dignified, and it amuses me. Most of my kids couldn't give two damns about being sophisticated or matching their clothes, and she accomplishes both with style. She is so sweet-tempered, but she is very curious. She gets that from both of her parents.

She still loves that little duck plushie and carries it around everywhere. Since her speech is improving, as well as her signing and writing, I can hardly complain. Granted, it speech and writing are still far, far behind that of a normal child, but at least her signing is up to par. It makes me feel better about sending her to school.

Oh, did I forget to mention that? I'm sending her to school. It's one designed for children with special needs, but they don't coddle the kids at all. Some have learning disabilities, some are deaf, some are blind, some are mute. It'll be good for her to be among kids who struggle as well. She gets frustrated at home when no one else has the same communication problems. She starts school tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes. Here's hoping!

First Day of School

Like most parents, Amyla was understandably anxious when Yana's first day of school rolled around. She knew that this was what was best for her daughter, and she knew Yana would appreciate it in the future. For now, though, the girl seemed to have mixed feelings about it, which only serve to increase Amyla's nervousness.

"You will be fine," she was saying to the girl, signing as she spoke aloud. "Be good. I will be back this afternoon."

Yana nodded in understanding, her short braid falling forward over her shoulder. Dressed in jeans and a short-sleeved green shirt, her backpack slung over one shoulder, she looked just like any other child on their way to school. The difference was that Yana wore an orange school-issued bracelet around her left wrist. She only had to wear the bracelet when at the school for the first few weeks to signify to her teachers specifically why she was there. All of the children here had special needs: learning disabilities, developmental problems, blindness, deafness, muteness, paralysis. The kids also covered such a wide range of races that Amyla had to wonder how the teachers coped with it all. Oh well. This school had come highly recommended, and Amyla had been very pleased when she toured the facility and watched classes in progress. Yana would be fine.

"I love you," Amyla finished aloud, not bothering to accompany that with signs. She gave Yana a quick hug and then shooed her in the classroom door with the other kids, giving her daughter one last look before heading home. The house was going to be considerably quieter that day with one child out.

***

Yana stepped into the classroom, initially shocked by the flurry of activity. There were parents and children everywhere. Some of the kids had odd stick-canes that they were waving in front of them as they walked. One child was furiously signing things at his parents ("Don't want book! COOKIE!"), and a few were crying. She froze for a moment just inside the doorway, not quite sure what to do.

Her problem was solved a minute later when a woman (Yana put her around her own mother's age) stepped forward. She looked fairly human to Yana, barring her pearly wings and oddly iridescent blue-silver eyes. "Hello," the woman spoke aloud, accompanying it with a handsign. "Are you Aryana Layden?"

Though her lip-reading abilities were still a tad weak, Yana managed to understand what the woman was asking, and she nodded vigorously.

The woman smiled. "I am Estelle. I will be your teacher," she said slowly, signing as she spoke. "What should I call you?"

Yana immediately raised her right hand to begin spelling out her nickname, but the teacher caught her hand in a surprisingly strong grip. When the child looked surprised, she was answered with a smile and a simple command of, "Speak, please." Surprised by this, Yana swallowed nervously. "Y-y-yaaaaannnnaa."

Estelle smiled. "Very good," she said and signed. "Find the desk with your name. It is yours while you are here."

Nodding her assent, Yana began sidling toward the desks laid out in the room. She counted twelve, all told, and upon a more thorough examination of the room, she realized that most of the kids were roughly her own age. One looked a big big, to her, but that could have been her imagination. She noticed that all of the desks had an index card taped to them, and on that card was a name. Also on that card was a series of raised bumps that looked fairly useless to Yana, even when she saw a few of the kids running their fingertips over the bumps. She quickly found one labelled with her own name and sat down in it, tucking her backpack down between her feet.

The activity began to die down as many of the parents began to leave. Some kids looked scared, one or two looked interested, and the rest looked very upset. The one boy, who didn't seem to make speak at all, was still throwing a silent tantrum in the desk to the right of Yana's, and his parents (at least, that's who Yana assumed they were) were trying to calm him down. After another five or ten minutes of furiously fast signing, which Yana tried hard not to eavesdrop on, the parents left, leaving a sulking young boy in their wake.

As the door shut behind those adults, Estelle stood up in front of the classroom. She looked supremely peaceful, which made Yana feel a bit annoyed, as well as grateful to be in the back row. "Welcome," the woman said, speaking very clearly and signing with practiced ease. "I am Estelle, and I am your teacher. We are all here to learn together. If you need help, you can come to me." She smiled then, and a few of the kids gave her timid smiles in return. Yana managed a little quirk at both sides of her mouth, though it would hardly do for a real smile.

The teacher was already continuing her little speech. "We are going to start with names. When it is your turn, please stand and face the room to say your name."

Say their name? Out loud?! Yana blanched. Her vocal abilities were minimal, at best, and she didn't want to be embarassed in front of the whole class. She watched as the first boy stood up and turned to the class, noting the odd grayness in his eyes.

"My name is Edwin. I am blind," he said before sitting back down.

Yana, having been able to read his lips from the way he carefully annunciated his words, gazed at the back of the boy's head. Blind? He couldn't see? But how did he move around that easily?

The child behind Edwin stood up and introduced herself, and then the girl behind her, the one to Yana's left, hesitantly spoke her name too. Yana couldn't understand what she said; her lips were moving strangely. The girl blushed suddenly and repeated her name again, accompanying it with signs this time.

My name is Colette.

Yana had a hunch that this girl was deaf also, a hunch which was confirmed when she spied the orange bracelet around the girl's left wrist. The dragon-girl's heart jumped for joy. She wasn't alone!

Five more children said their names, and then it was Yana's turn. She slowly stood up and swallowed. "Myyy naaaaaaame is Yaaana," she said carefully, accompanying it with the appropriate signs before sitting back down. She happened to glance to her right to see the mute boy snickering at her, and her face flushed. She must have sounded so stupid.

The little mute boy was supposed to be the last, but he refused to get up, simply crossing his arms over his chest and glaring up at the teacher. Even when Estelle tried to coax him into writing his name on the board, he refused, signing something very nasty (at least, Yana assumed it was nasty since that particular sign was unfamiliar to her and the teacher looked vaguely disturbed by it) at the woman. After another moment, Estelle spoke aloud and signed, "And our last friend is Devon. We are all friends here, and we are all here to learn together."

Then it seemed the happy times were over, for Estelle passed out a very thick book to everyone, the word V-O-C-A-B-U-L-A-R-Y spelled out on the front.

And that was how Yana was first introduced to classroom learning.

***

Yana couldn't hear the bell that signalled three o'clock, but she could see the clock from where she sat. She fidgeted impatiently while Estelle gave them assignments for the night, and then she hurriedly packed her books in her backpack. It took her a moment to throw the now much heavier bag on her back, but she managed. In no time at all, she was scooting out the door of the classroom and into the hall. It didn't take her long to follow the swarm of kids heading out the front door of the school, and she found her mother almost instantly. She never thought she'd be this grateful to see her mother, but considering her day, her mother looked like an angel.

"Hi, Yana!" Amyla said cheerfully as her daughter approached. "How was school?"

School had gone from iffy to bad after a morning spent learning new words (and their accompanying signs) and reading from a book. They also did some math (which Yana hated with a fiery passion) before they went to lunch. Lunch and recess had made the day go from bad to miserable, and mute Devon had made her day terrible by spending his recess time making her miserable. And she had thought her siblings were bad...

After lunch, they learned about history and science. Devon had silently snickered at Yana when she completely botched the pronunciation of the planets' names. Yana had been tempted to punch him but had remembered her mother's warning just in time.

No hitting!

A hand on her shoulder brought Yana back to the present and made her realize that she was still standing there in front of her mother. She wanted to tell her the truth, admit that she hated being made to speak all the time and having to sit next to a spoiled, snobby brat of a boy. Instead, she managed a smile and a shrug. "Ooookaaaaaay," she said, watching her mother smile and lead her to the car to go home. Well, it looked like she wasn't getting out of this whole school business for awhile.

It was going to be a long week. She already couldn't wait for the weekend.

Well, Yana started school, and I was pretty sure she'd never forgive May and I. She told May that it was 'fine', and then as soon as she got home, she fairly barricaded herself in her room and refused to emerge for an hour. She came out with her homework done and a very frustrated look on her face. Apparently, part of her homework is to practice her speech, and she doesn't want to learn how to speak aloud.

I'll use the opportunity to mention that having an argument with a deaf child is both hilarious and disturbing. She signs so fast that I can barely keep up. May doesn't seem to have a problem with it, but they both got very animated. In the end, Yana lost. She wasn't too pleased about having to go to school again, but she seems to realize it's necessary. Something about it really bugs her, I think, but she won't tell us. Maybe she'll open up to us later.

She is getting physically more active, though, which makes me curious. I wonder what she is going to do with her energy. Actually, I'm not curious. I'm a tad frightened.

After a lot of arguing back and forth, we finally seem to have struck a compromise. Yana has been extremely upset about school. I know the one boy has been bugging her. One of the other parents called me to tell me that; Yana was too proud and stubborn to tell me herself. After Aiod and I confronted her about it, we got the full story: being picked on, difficult homework, having trouble with speaking... the works. While I feel terrible that my little girl has to deal with this, I know it'll only make her a better person in the end. So, she's sticking it out.

In return, though, Aiodhan and I endeavored to get her into an activity she would like. After their fun at the skating rink, we realized that Yana might actually have a small talent in that area. Since she'll likely never fly (or swim, with those wings), ice skating is as good a hobby as any. She had her first lesson today, and she seemed to have enjoyed it immensely. She emerged giggling and jabbering on about how much fun it was to go gliding around the ice. I think that the lessons were a good idea. I think we'd best continue them.

I've been a little worried about the amount of time Yana spends with Greg. Granted, he is a good kid with a parent I trust, but it just makes me a little nervous. He is a little older, and he does have magic at his disposal. I guess I'm being a parent and feeling uneasy. Oh well. I suppose she is too young for a crush. It is cute to watch them interact, though.

[How We Deal With Things]

mistalina13
Mistalina was in an entirely different state of mind as of a late, she seemed a little distant and lost since she gave birth to the twins. She figured it was because she had given one of them up and it felt like part of her was missing. But, she had made that agreement with Caitlyn and she had kept her word.

The black haired tiefling walked along the sidewalk, with her infant son in her arms. She was alone with the young boy, having left Demetrius and Shidiomi back at home. The small boy began to fuss, and Mistalina looked toward the sky to judge the time. Dusk was begining to fall, the little tiefling in her arms probably needed to nurse.

She frowned and looked around for a place to rest and feed her son. Thankfully she was near the clinic, and it tended to be open most of the time to visitors at least. So she headed up the street, pushed the door open and slipped in.

Amyla Edana
Let's go, Yana. Maybe Greg is there. Amyla was signing to her daughter, her hands moving in the beautiful fluid motions that made up sign language. The woman was at her wits' end and had run out of logical excuses to pry her daughter out of the house. The child had been cranky ever since she had started school, and the fact that Amyla wanted her to socialize made Yana ever more ornery. Even now, as they strode down the street toward the clinic, the child was looking peeved.

"Nuhh. You jus' sayiiiiing daat," the deaf girl drawled aloud, sighing as her mother ushered her toward the clinic door. She didn't want to see the doctors or any people. Really, she just wanted to stay in her room and sulk about having to go to that dumb place known as school.

Amyla didn't even bother to argue with her and simply opened the clinic door, smiling just a bit as Yana reluctantly entered. The woman stepped inside behind her daughter, smiling widely as she spied a familiar face. After a quick memory check, she was able to remember the other female's name. "Hello, Mistalina!"

mistalina13
Mistalina had begun nursing the little red headed infant when she heard the door swing open again and she looked up. "Hello, Amyla....Yana." She managed a little smile and winced, wishing Nymue wouldn't suck so hard when he nursed.

Amyla Edana
"Ohhh, your little ones were born!" Amyla said, smiling widely at the other female. When Yana balked and tried to go around her to escape, she quickly stuck an arm out to block the girl's escape route, giving her daughter a narrow-eyed look.

Yana sighed, her face assuming an expression of defeat. The little deaf girl gave Mistalina a polite wave and then plopped herself down in a chair, obviously not pleased about this situation.

Amyla Edana
Settling herself on a chair nearby, Amyla smiled at the sight of the little boy. He was adorable. "Nymue. He is very good-looking," she said, smiling widely. She then gestured at her own daughter. "I think you met Yana before. She has grown a bit since then, though."

Yana, having been watching the two adults' faces, was able to discern most of what they said. She tilted her head to one side and looked back over at Mistalina, slightly curious about the baby held in her arms. While she itched to get up and take a closer look, manners and the fact that she was still cranky about being dragged here won out over inquisitiveness, and she stayed firmly planted in her seat.

mistalina13
"His twin's name is Alendan...he's with Caitlyn, so you'll likely not see him often, if ever." Mistalina's features saddened slightly, only for a moment. She missed her other son. "That she has."

Nymue having been fed was rather sleepy, but he still seemed to look toward Yana with a slight interest, though he couldn't discern what she was, only that she wasn't Momma.

Amyla Edana
Amyla had a faint flicker of memory, that Mistalina had mentioned that arrangement before when they met. It saddened her that things had worked out that way. Hopefully, the twins would be permanently reunited some day. To be deprived of your sibling... ahhh, best not to think about it too much. "I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you get to see him," was all she said on the topic. Perhaps it was best if she left it be. "Your other child, Shidiomi... how is he?" she inquired curiously, remembering the little boy from before.

Yana sensed another pair of eyes on her, and she looked straight at the baby boy, her mismatched eyes wide with curiosity. It seemed he was looking right back, so she lifted a small hand to give him a little wave. He was sort of cute... as well as rather interesting-looking.

mistalina13
Nymue made a little noise and yawned sleepily, but didn't do much else. His little tail swished back and forth.

"I should, if Caitlyn keeps her word." Mistalina glanced down at Nymue for a moment, then back to Amyla. "He's well, growing like a weed...and quite happy to be a big brother."

Amyla Edana
After a moment of brief disappointment at not getting a response, Yana simply settled back in her chair, idly swinging her legs back and forth and pretending to ignore the adults. Then it became too much for her, and she got up, scooting her chair closer to her mother's before sitting down again.

Grinning a bit in Yana's direction, despite the 'I'm so not speaking to you' vibes coming off the girl, Amyla secretly rejoiced. Yay. Progress. She turned her gaze back to Mistalina after a moment, smiling at little Nymue. "That's good that he's happy about having a little sibling," she said, referring, of course, to Shidiomi. "Is Nymue an easy baby?"

mistalina13
"Mostly yes, unless he's hungry or tired then he gets a bit cranky..." Mistalina coo'd over the little tiefling in her arms and attempted to smooth out his red hair, the constant reminder of his other mother who she sometimes wished she would never have to see again.

Amyla Edana
Amyla had to chuckle at that. "I think all babies tend to get cranky when they're hungry and tired. At least, all have mine have," she added, glancing over at her daughter beside her. "They're quite a handful, but I think it's worthwhile, even if they drive me crazy," she added, glancing over at her own somewhat-cranky child. "I must say, though, their fussing gets less cute, the older they get."

mistalina13
Mistalina smiled. "Nymue is awfully quiet, for a tiefling. Perhaps its the mixed demon's blood...the first real tantrum he throws though, will prove or disprove that."

Amyla Edana
Amyla cringed a bit. "Yeah, it could be bad. I think I have a few spare sets of earplugs lying around the house if you feel you need some," she said, remembering how handy the little things had become once Caleb started throwing his screaming tantrums. Ugh. She was so glad he was past those days.

mistalina13
"I'll be alright, I believe. At least if he has strong lungs, it will prove he is healthy." Mistalina looked down at Nymue again and gave the boy a little kiss on the forhead.

Amyla Edana
Amyla had to agree with that. She relaxed back in her chair, giving a happy sigh as she watched Yana out of the corner of her eye. The girl had stopped sulking and was halfway paying attention, looking back and forth between the two women. Perhaps she was working on reading lips. Amyla prayed it was so. "He's lucky to have an older sibling to learn from," she added, watching Mistalina and her little boy. He was a lucky child indeed; she'd often wished for a sibling herself.

mistalina13
"Shidiomi just gets mad that he has to go to school now, and he can't stay at home with Nymue during the day." Mistalina giggled a bit and shifted on the couch to settle herself better.

Amyla Edana
"Ahhh.... that sounds familiar!" Amyla chuckled, gesturing with a hand in Yana's direction. "Yana isn't thrilled about going to school either!"

Yana backed up her mother's statement with a fervent nod. "Haaaaaate schoooool!" she said, making a wry face. She hated being picked on and having to do homework. It was terrible.

mistalina13
The black haired tiefling smiled again. "Shidiomi is usually quite good in school, but lately he's been distracted." She noticed Nymue had gotten quiet and glanced down to find him asleep. "Awh...he's finally asleep."

Amyla Edana
Amyla resisted the urge to coo at the sleeping child, but she did have to smile. He was so adorable. All babies were when they slept. They looked so innocent and peaceful. "Distracted because he wants to be home with his baby brother?" she asked, lowering her voice a few decibels to make sure she didn't wake Nymue up.

mistalina13
"Mhm. He loves playing with Nymue when he's at home...so does Demetrius...it's quite cute actually." Mistalina smoothed Nymue's ever messy hair again.

Amyla Edana
"That's good to hear, that he loves his little brother so much," Amyla said, a faintly wistful smile on her face. If only her own children all got along so well, she'd be a perfectly happy woman. Then again, if they were that peaceful, they wouldn't be her kids. She enjoyed the chaos and fighting on occasion. But at some moments, like this one, she wished they all played together. "Who is Demetrius?" she inquired suddenly, the name not ringing any mental bells.

mistalina13
"Oh, yes, you haven't met him yet. He's a persacom I bought, to help me with the children and other things around the house." Mistalina coddled the little boy against her. She wouldn't be able to stay too much longer, she needed to get Nymue home and into his basinet and tend to other things.

Amyla Edana
Persacom? That was a term that Amyla was unfamiliar with, and her brow furrowed lightly as she tried to match a mental file with the word.

Yana beat her to the punch in asking, though. "Whaa's a perrrrrssacommm?" the girl inquired, annunciating as best she could. That particular word was not one she knew, in sign or in speech.

mistalina13
"A robot, sort of...but he's built smart enough to learn lots of new things. So, he's a little childish and sort of shy sometimes, but he's learned a lot since I activated him. They made him quite handsome too." An awkward sort of smile crossed Mistalina's features then.

Amyla Edana
Yana processed the word 'robot' and let the issue rest there. She knew about robot people; she had one for a sibling, after all.

Amyla nodded, a sly grin creeping its way across her face. "I see. He sounds like an interesting companion. I think I'm happy with my mate, though, even if he is a bit snarly at times."

mistalina13
Mistalina blushed faintly. The persacom's company delighted her. As much as she loved her two young boys, having someone that at least looked closer to her own age made her feel a little better. Besides, her sons needed a male influence in their life, real or artificial.

"Ah...it's getting late.." She frowned a little, having glanced out the window. "I should be getting home."

Amyla Edana
Amyla decided to be polite and ignore Mistalina's faint blush. Obviously that was a sensitive topic, so she opted to leave it be. At the reference to it getting late, Amyla herself glanced out the window, her eyes suddenly growing wide. "Oh, it is late! Eowyn should be getting home about now," she said, muttering the last part more to herself.

Sensing that she would be heading home soon, Yana subtly stretched, glancing back and forth between her mother and Mistalina.

mistalina13
Mistalina carefully got to her feet and resettled the sleeping infant in her arms. "It's nice to have seen you again Amyla, Yana." She smiled softly and padded toward the door.

Amyla Edana
"And you as well, Mistalina," Amyla said kindly, turning to gesture to her daughter that they were leaving. To her surprise, Yana was already up and moving toward the door, though, and Amyla had to jog a bit to catch up with the child. Goodness... the child could move when she wanted to!

mistalina13
Mistalina chuckled, slipped out and began her short trek home.

I'm beginning to wonder whether letting Yana spend time with Greg and Rich was a good idea. I was not pleased to find her curled up asleep on Greg's lap the other day. Amyla seemed to take it well, but I just wanted to beat the kid's brains out. Yana is my daughter, and I'm not letting him mess with her. Moron. I swear I'll strangle him the next time he upsets her.

May yelled at me from the other room that I'd better be writing something purposeful. Yes, May, of course I am! Jeeez... gimme some credit??

Yana seems to be doing well in school. Her reading and writing has improved greatly, and her signing is much more fluent. She is reading lips much better, and her speech is progressing quite nicely. She still has a long, long, long way to go, but she's getting there. Slowly, but she is getting there.

She seems to have been improving more dramatically since starting skating lessons. She is certainly stronger and more graceful, and having skating to look forward to makes homework more doable. I took her ice skating with Dageus before, and they seemed to have fun, despite the fact that Dageus wasn't all that graceful. I should take them again. They'd both like that.

We're going to be arranging for a hearing-ear dog for Yana soon too, someone to act as her ears when we can't be around. Yana is very excited, and I don't blame her. I would be!

Mother/Daughter Snuggletime

Early weekday mornings were normally a very busy time in the Raikes-Layden household. Between kids running around getting ready for school, babies fussing for breakfast and attention, and the two parents attempting to get the kids ready for school and take care of the babies, the place was normally a state of complete chaos. But every now and again, on a rare weekday when all schools were cancelled for some stupid (but most welcome!) holiday, quiet reigned over the household.

Yana was enjoying one such morning to the fullest. Since her father was a bit of an insomniac, her mother occasionally woke up to have the entire bed to herself. And on this morning, Amyla had found herself alone in bed, and Yana, feeling a bit saddened and depressed by recent events, had wandered from down the hallway and crawled in bed alongside her mother...

...Which was where she was now, lying on her side and resting her head on her father's pillow, facing her mother. Her mother was similarly lying down and facing Yana, looking more than a bit tousled after a restless night of tossing and turning. Neither female seemed willing to speak for awhile, just lying there in quiet pondering and looking at each other.

Amyla was the one to break the silence. "What's bothering you, Yana?" she said slowly, careful to annunciate so that the girl could read her lips.

Easily deciphering what her mother had said, the girl offered up a noncommittal shrug. There were many things bothering her: school, projects, feeling just generally sad about not hearing, Greg being mad at her... really, it was a lot for a little girl. "Lotssssa tiiiingsss," she murmured softly, watching Amyla's face closely.

"Lots of things? Like what? School?" Amyla pressed, reaching out a hand to brush some of Yana's tousled brown hair away from her face.

The girl nodded. "Deeeehvuuuun. Making fuuun offf meee. Schoool isss harddd." She wanted to add more, but she wasn't really sure she wanted to give her mother the intimate details of her problems. She turned her attention, instead, to the sheets beneath her, tracing one of the light blue stripes in the fabric.

Unfortunately for Yana, Amyla possessed that mother's intuition that told her something was not right. She reached out and placed a finger beneath Yana's chin, tipping the girl's chin up to look her in the face. "Sad about Greg too?" she inquired.

The girl flushed a little and then nodded a simple confession. She was so busted. "Heeee'ssss maad at meeee. Hee wasss meeeean. Ssso I don't wan' talk to him," she added, watching her mother's face.

Her mother smiled gently. "Boys can be like that, Yana. Just give him some time to think."

Yana frowned. "But..." she trailed off, knowing her mother was probably right. It didn't make her any less mad about the way he had behaved though. She wanted to get up in his face and yell at him for brushing her off and yelling at her and blocking her out. She had only been trying to help...

"No buts," her mother said camly before rolling onto her back and prompting herself up on a few pillows. She glanced down at Yana, smiling and gently stroking the girl's hair. Her other hand came to rest on her still-flat abdomen, Yana's hand coming to join it a moment later.

"Baaaby soon?" Yana inquired, sitting up and settling against her mother's side. She was excited about having a new little sibling soon, though she had overheard (or, more accurately, accidentally witnessed) a conversation between her parents that left her worried. She didn't want her mother to be tired or in pain. Bad.

She stared anxiously up at her mother's face when Amyla chuckled. "No, not for awhile," her mother was saying, pressing a kiss to Yana's forehead before drawing back so that the girl could see her face. "Not for a good long while. Don't worry, though."

Unconvinced, Yana merely settled back against Amyla, snuggling her face into her mother's shoulder. There was just too much to worry about.

After a lot of arguing back and forth, Aiodhan, Yana, and I finally reached a consensus as to what was best for her. Yana was initially displeased with the outcome of the argument, but after a moment, she came to the reasoning that it was a good idea. We're moving her to a regular school for middle school. She won't be at the school for the physically disabled anymore; she will be in a normal school with normal (HA! As if anyone in Gaia can be called that!) kids, kids who aren't deaf, blind, or mute. Yana was very hesitant about the idea, but she eventually agreed. It will give her a lot more practice in speaking and lipreading.

She was happy to note, though, that we already sent an exception to the school board for her to have her hearing dog with her at school. The officials consented, and she will be able to take her dog to school, provided the dog is properly trained.

And that brings me to my final and most important order of business, which is that Yana got her hearing ear dog. She was a shelter dog, and she is several shades of green with a green and gold flower design on her left foreleg and shoulder. Yana immediately named her Hiroko, which Aiodhan told her means 'generous child' in Japanese. Already, the two are inseparable, and she has only been here one day! Hiroko knows basic commands like 'sit' and 'lie down'. Yana is working with her to teach her the signs that accompany those commands, and Hiroko seems to be picking it up well. We're going to have to train her to recognize and react to certain sounds, which will take time, but I feel confident we can have Yana and Hiroko prepared by the time middle school rolls around. Let's hope so, at least!

Child Check-up

Child’s Name: Aryana Meline Layden
Gender: Female
Parent(s): Aiodhan Layden and Amyla Raikes
Soul/Essence: Blue Jay/Emerald
Skills/Aptitudes: Aryana is very skilled at lipreading, which will serve her well. She is also incredibly curious and intelligent, good at filling in the missing pieces. Try to interest her in jigsaw puzzles.
Physical Strengths/Weaknesses: Aryana's deafness makes her vulnerable to a great deal of things. She also seems to be a bit... accident-prone? She seems to be physically healthy and graceful, otherwise, though we do have some concerns about her genetics. Because she is part dragon and part blue jay, there is the possibility that she will not bear live young but actually lay eggs.
Other Concerns: Because of her skill in lipreading and natural curiosity, Aryana will be tempted to eavesdrop on conversations. While this may serve her well, it could also get her into serious trouble. Her inquisitive nature could get her into sticky situations, so she should be taught caution.
Overall Comments: On the whole, Aryana seems to be developing well. Having the hearing dog will assist her in being less vulnerable and more independent. Her lipreading skills should be encouraged, within reason, and she could very well make a career of it.

Mum and Dad got me new puzzles. I've been working on them all week. They're fun. It is kind of like reading people's lips. Sometimes I don't see everything of what somebody says so I have to fill in all of the missing pieces. Mum said that doing more puzzles will help me with that. I've been reading lots too so I can know more words and understand more of what adults say. Mum says adults use big words on purpose so kids can't understand. That's not fair.

I have a new necklace too. I made it from a crystal I found in a rock. It's all green and jagged. Dad helped me put a metal piece with a loop on it and then I put a cord through the loop to make a necklace. I like it. It's pretty.
