I can see where Maryke is getting at except for two things:
1.) I've seen 14 year olds with far more baggage than Erik. Erik is mild compared to quite a few I have seen. So that I will disagree with entirely.
2.) Sure, the shy and friendly thing is common but let's face it, that's because it is common in reality. It's something you see constantly. It's not the only thing that makes up his character anyhow. Also, you see a lot of similar/common traits in the islanders as is. Overly emotional, psychological problems/disorders, wrong side of the law, came from a more high class life, etc.
I personally see no problem with him being shy and friendly. He's mostly just your common kid I use to see in middle school and high school. I think that makes him a bit more unique than most of the islanders who have been through some rather elaborate problems or came from a more prestige/complicated way of life.
Besides that, I would agree beef up the rest of the areas Maryke has mentioned.
