Why did he do this to himself?

Things had started to go down hill for Tristan lately. The excitement about being in a new place with new people had started to wear off and now, now he had taken to pretty much haunting the gardens which did nothing to improve his mood.

He didn't hate plants, no, they just made him think about unhappy things.

So why was it he kept ending up there? He'd be damned if he knew.

He had brought his lap top with him today. He had planed to try and do some work while he was here so Hammie was back at the apartment, the puppy was a bit of a distraction. Then again the plants were too.

He was looking at a flower, well looking it past it, a frown on his face. He had been like that for a while and would probably keep looking at it until something snapped him out of it.

That distraction came in the form of Carver Johnston, who - paternally arm-in-arm with Natalie - stopped when he saw the bow of the familiar head, beamed like a lightswitch being flicked on, squeezed the younger girl's shoulder and hurried on a few steps ahead.

"Tristan!"

He stopped near the other man, obviously pleased to see him, hands in his jean pockets once more. "Tristan, you hadn't told me you'd moved in - I would have come to see you."

Natalie follow, smiling quietly. Another one of Carver's friends, and a guardian? He couldn't be that bad, then. No, nowhere near Ama levels.

Coming over, she waved. "Hey, I'm Natalie," she got in, feeling a bit awkward. "You live here, too?" For some reason, that sounded very odd to her, but hey - introductions had to be made somehow.

(It sounds WEIRD because I'm in serious pain omg crying )

Tristan jumped a little, he hadn't noticed the other two at all so he was a little startled when he heard his name. He smiled when he saw the other man. It was a pleasent surprise to see him there, he'd been meaning to call him or go and see him but he hadn't gotten around to it yet.

"Caver, it's good to see you. I've been meaning to call, sorry I haven't yet, I just moved in a couple of days ago," Tristan said, "Still plenty of things to unpack if your still interested in helping."

He smiled at Natalie too when she came over. Seeing other people was making him feel at least a little better. "Tristan Kane," he introduced himself, holding out a hand to shake, "I live over in the building by the lab."

"Tristan's the smart one around here," Carver informed the teenager, grinning sidelong at the dark-haired man. Inevitably he was already mentally gearing up to happily find Tristan's couch as he had found Natalie's. It was something to do with testosterone. "When he's not, ahem, being a... what would you call it? Burger jockey?"

"Ooooh." Blink. Blink. Processing.

"... Oh, so you work at a fast food place! Congrats on actually having a stable-ish job." She laughed, shaking his hand. "And here I am, bouncing from one thing to the next."

Tristan still looked young, so she just attributed the job to him being an overstressed college student (or perhaps going for another degree?) She had no clue he was thirty-ish, at least.

"Carver's a godsend when moving in. He found my couch for me." Another smile.

"So. Are you hungry? I was just asking Carver if he wanted to come over for lunch."

"I work at McDonalds," shaking his head with a smile, "anything including unemployment would be better than my job."

"Found your couch?" Tistan asked, tilting his head to the side. The thought amused him, mentally picturing Caver looking under a rug to find a couch. "Did you... misplace it?"

When he heard the words 'hungry' and 'lunch' his stomach gave off a small growl just to make sure Tristan actually knew it was empty. He had been eatting irregularly, just the little that was in his apartmenmt. His stomach was sure he had forgotten about it.

Tristan blushed a little at the stomach growl, "I guess I am, but I wouldn't want to impose."

"I doubt you would," Carver said, with the naive cheer that he always had to denote that the whole wide world was as benevolent as he was. "Miss Natalie has a pasta sauce that made the tomatoes glad they died. Well. Er. A friend who makes pasta sauce that makes the tomatoes glad they died. Buck up, old man, we're too ancient to go without lunch."

"... Point, Tristan." She wrinkled her nose. "The smell would get to me so quickly.

"And yeah. When I was moving in, it got buried, and I forgot where it was. I still have no clue how so few objects take up so many boxes..." Well, okay. Most of those boxes were fabric, costumes, sewing machine effects, buttons, thread, cording, paint...

"I thought guys started making comments like that when they were over the hill. Or losing their hair, whichever came first." She stuck out her tongue at Carver.

"But, actually, I'm running low on pasta sauce - there isn't enough for three people. I was more thinking sandwiches. Or soup. Or something along those lines. Still up for it?"

Make Tomatoes glad they died? Well Carver certainly had an interesting way of saying things. He was actually starting to cheer up now, maybe coming out to the gardens wasn't such a bad idea.

"Ancient, speak for yourself, I'm not even thirty yet," Tristan said with a bit of a laugh. "I'll tag along for lunch, but only if I'm not being a bother."

"Of course you're not being a bother." Carver's smile was warm and frank. "I'm sure Mi - Natalie would love to get to know you; I think we should all get to know each other better. - And watch out, young man; I'll be standing by making you eat your words when you have that terrible thirtieth birthday and have to sit in the old man's section like I do. You're catching up on me, for sure."

He walked ahead a few steps, and thought about it. "On another note, if I start to get bald, Natalie, please tell me."

Natalie laughed. "I'll do that, Carver. No worries - I'd never lie about the state of your head." She stood up on her tip toes and patted the older man on the crown of his head.

"I still don't think either of you have to sit in the 'old man's section' just yet," she huffed, stalking off playfully ahead of them. "And that's probably a good thing, since there is none at my place. C'mon."

"I still have a year before I'm thirty, I can live it up lots in that time," Tristan smiled as followed behind Natilie.

"You know, I don't think bald would be a bad thing, I'd never have to worry about how messy my hair is ever again. Hm, I wonder how I'd look bald," he was speaking seriously with a straight face. He meant it. He hated his hair.

"I wouldn't," Carver warned. "It tends to make one look androgynous; or worse, like a hard-rock punk. Alas, I shaved it all off - well - there was a reason, it was mainly an accident - some years back. I looked vile, to tell the truth. Hopefully it would look better on your face, but I wouldn't do anything so drastic."

Carver, shaved bald? Natalie snickered at the thought. Then she twined her fingers in her curly mass of hair.

"I personally like my messy hair."

Granted, her hair wasn't overly messy - it was just, well, curly! She managed to keep it under control and up off her neck most of the time. She'd entertained the thought of cutting it short, but it probably would have frizzed out quite a bit.

Her building was finally in sight, and she led the two men up to her apartment.

"Sit wherever - any particular sandwich orders? Or should I just make whatever I have the ingredients for?"
