Really?! Big Little Sister came out of a book, too!
And she was nice but really protective, and she liked to fight. But Luna hated to fight. And Big Little Sister liked a lot of things that Luna didn't, and Big Little Sister was bored by a lot of things Luna liked. But they both pick flowers together and sometimes, if Luna asked just right, she was allowed to help upgrade the toaster.

Blue was all quiet and kind of skittery, and not much like Merlyn at all either, but he was awfully nice and Merlyn liked him a lot, and sometimes he played jokes too, so it was kind of like Luna and Big Little Sister? That was neat!
... upgrade the toaster? Merlyn's eyes rounded. How do you upgrade a toaster?

Well, Luna wasn't sure of the details. But it APPARENTLY involved taking a screwdriver to the whole thing and making it so the bread exploded when the toaster was plugged in.

Merlyn wanted to learn how to do that! That would be GREAT! He could imagine it very clearly! Toast in toaster, push the button, then ... FWING! Flying exploding toast! This was such an amusing mental image that the toddler tipped over onto his back, giggling hysterically and holding his sides.

Of course it was! Exploding TOAST. Merlyn finally got his breath back and sat up again. It was funny when things exploded, he informed Luna. He wasn't big enough to have fireworks yet, but maybe next year, when the exploding things holiday happened, he could have something to blow up himself.

Luna wasn't too sure about the exploding. She liked big sparkles as much as the next person, but exploding was loud and smokey and firey, and that was scary...

It was kind of like water, Merlyn observed. If it was exploding all by itself, it was scary, but if you were making it explode, it was SO AWESOME. Because you knew it was going to make the noise, so it didn't make you poof.

That was why you were careful. Merlyn nodded firmly and leaned way over to get another shovelful of dirt out of the hole.
Whoa. Balance issues. His tail flailed in little circles as he attempted to keep himself from falling in.

"Aaaah!" Luna nearly shouted, lunging forward and grabbing for Merlyn-- rather, the first part of him she thought would keep him from falling in.

Merlyn yowled, wobbled backwards and thumped onto his rear, lower lip trembling as he tried to decide if the yank and thump had been enough to warrant having a small fit about. It hadn't hurt that much, but it had been a shock!
At the noise, Prox looked up sharply, put his book down, and hurried over to the two children. "What happened, kiddo? Is everyone okay?"
"Fell down," Merlyn said sulkily.

"Nothing broken? Any band-aids necessary?" Prox crouched to have a look at Luna, concerned by her distress. He glanced up to Jokeph. "Is she okay?"
Merlyn, meanwhile, decided that it wasn't, indeed, worth making a fuss over, and announced, "I wanna band-aid. For my butt."

Oh, wonderful. Jokeph simply prayed that Prox knew sign language.
Mistress did not mean to cause your boy distress, came the signed words. I will attend to her.
And as he leaned forward to scoop the worried girl out of the sand, he suddenly froze at Merlyn's declaration. Even Luna seemed to pause.
For one incredibly long second, their minds were blank, save for the echoing of "For my butt."
