"Well, then you should be really good at it," she smiled. "I, for one, have never been good with numbers."
Or chemicals. Or dates. Or measurements. After dumping the lawyer path, she didn't really have much else of a choice except to jump into the realm of literature.
When the waitress came by, Remi looked up at her with a polite smile.
"I'll take a slice of your Oreo pie, please."

"Spiced apple for me, with a scoop of vanilla on top."
The waitress took the two orders down, then shuffled back off to the kitchen, leaving them alone once again. Stephan straighted himself up, taking his arms off the table, "I kind of... Have to be. I don't have a real budget, at least not like a lot of people do, but if I go overboard I get this whole responsibility lecture from my mother. She still refuses to go shopping unless there's a sale going on, it's kind of funny." His family was a bit weird, normal by some of the standards that apparently surrounded the complex, but weird for the community he had been raised in.

"I actually used to go shopping at Salvation Army if that's any indication of the state of my budget," Remi laughed. She could have always asked for some help from her parents (that weren't that cruel and unloving), but she insisted on making it on her own. At least that way she didn't feel obligated to other people. She really didn't want to be looking after her parents after they were old and in wheelchairs.
"So, since we've apparently exhausted the topic of work...what do you do for fun?"

Stephan couldn't help but smile, tight wallet, he hadn't known many people with a budget during his school years. For fun... Getting drunk and passing out didn't really count as fun, at least not when he was the only one. "Well, I spent most of my free time doing sports, team, and house football and rugby," he offered, trying to think of anything else noteworthy, "Don't know what I'm going to do out here though, no one I've met so far really seems like the type for contact sports. What about you?"

Ahh, a sports guy. That explained the running even more.
"Are you asking what do I do for fun or if I like contact sports?" she chuckled, trying to remember the last time she played anything. Work and Gavin had taken up most of her time recently. "A while ago I used to really like butting in on football and soccor games at a nearby park. Obviously, I haven't been able to do that in a while, thanks to work and Gavin--my toddler. As for what I do now for fun--well, having a toddler is an exciting adventure all in itself that runs 24/7."

A girl that liked sports, that was a start at least, "Gavin, that's a nice name, bet he's a handful if this was the only time you could get away." From what he had seen and heard so far, most of the kids were handfuls. And from the looks of the soul he'd seen earlier, his wasn't going to be any different. Leaning back against the booth, he frowned, "I don't know how I'm going to deal with a toddler running around, I've never really had to take care of myself, or anyone else, except maybe my little sister once in a while. We don't talk much anymore though." Lighter subject, don't think about how badly you're going to screw up. "Maybe you could escape sometime and play with me? Bet I could out-throw you," he challenged.

"Oh Gavin's more than a handful," she replied. "Just yesterday he fell in the toilet trying to get up on the bathroom sink. He hates water, so that didn't turn out too well."
She wondered how he was going to live with a toddler too. From what she'd learned about him, he would be totally lost with a little kid running around. Just as everyone else did for her, she figured she might as well offer help,
"Well if you ever need help dealing with a chaotic toddler, feel free to give me a call."
At his last question, she almost instinctively said no but held back. Her life for the past year had been so hectic, she hardly ever left her room. Now that she was on the compound, there was no need for all the rush. She still had a hellion of chaos with her, but he went to bed around eightish. Escape for old pleasures might be fun.
"I don't know, I've been told I've got a pretty good throw," she smirked playfully at him. "I once out-threw the MVP of my high school team."
She failed to mention that the guy had just recovered from a broken wrist at the time, but she considered that unnecessary information.

"It'd be a nice competition then," he reasoned, "And be careful offering me childrearing help, you might end up busier than you already are." Just then the waitress came by, setting the plates down on the table as she passed with a tired, "Enjoy." Stephan watched as she left, taking a mental note to mark Waiter off his possible jobs. Way too tiring.

"That it would," she agreed. "We'll have to try it sometime. And don't think I can't handle two toddlers at once. I've tried it already and turned out quite successful."
She nodded a thanks to the waitress who set down the pie. Oreo pie. Was there anything more delicious in this world? She took her fork and took a first taste.
"Oh wow, this is delicious. I'd have never thought Oreo would taste so good in a pie."

Taking a bite of his own, Stephan spoke through a muffled mouthful, "I said the same 'bout apple pie first time my mother made it, hated fresh apples at the time." He was being as polite as he could manage, girls weren't usually like the brothers in their disregard for manners, but talking with his mouth full was a habit he didn't think he could break. After swallowing the bite, he nodded purposefully, "I can handle a bunch of piss drunk guys, but toddlers are completely new ground."

"Well, apples are quite different from Oreo," she took another bite, savoring the taste. "I had been expecting it to taste good, but not this good."
By his actions, Remi could see him fighting the male urge to throw manners and table etiquette to the eind. She wondered vaguely how it must be to live around guys all the time. Probably disgusting. However, she appreciated the effort.
"Trying having a toddler with wings, who's a magnificent escape artist, breaks everything, and hates bathtime," she ventured, dabbing her mouth with the napkin. "That's Gavin in a nutshell. Toddlers are more than new ground, they're entire universes unto themselves."

Stephan had taken another bit and started to swallow it, when he heard the summary of Gavin. Wings? Being more than a little startled, he started to choke, but quickly managed to swallow the piece and get his breathing back to normal. "That's, um. I mean I know the kids are different and all, but wings? I've only seen two toddlers around here, and one of them looks fairly normal." Entire universes. Like Bizarro world. He was doomed. Completely and totally doomed.

"You okay?" she asked, concerned about almost-choking spell. When his breathing returned to normal she continued, her eyes basically confirming that he was, in fact, completely and totally doomed just like he was thinking.
"I'm just glad he can't fly yet. I'm already indebted to Marc--one of the other guardians--since Gavin broke some priceless antique of his."
She just had to remind herself of that. The apparent 'uniform' he'd mentioned hadn't arrived yet, but it was only a matter of time. The next few months would probably be the most embarrassing ones of her life.
"Apparently I'm stuck running errands for him for the next few months, since he said didn't want money. I wouldn't have been able to afford it anyways."

"Fine, yeah," he said quickly, keeping eating as she told her story. Interesting, sounded familiar. Not that he'd ever indebted himself to anyone like that, but it really wasn't that different from how things went in the frat house. Maybe this wouldn't be so different. "Sounds like he'll be a real spitfire. If he causes trouble when he's older just send him my way. Sometimes boys need a good male straightening out," he offered, remembering the last time he'd backtalked to his mother, and the punishment he'd gotten from his father for it.

"I might just take you up on that offer later down the road," she said tiredly, wondering what the hell life would be like when Gavin was older. Teenagers. Hormones. A hormonal teenager with wings. Oh god, what had she gotten herself into?
"He really is a sweet kid though," she decided maybe it was time for some of Gavin's more redeeming qualities. "Total momma's boy, won't do anything without me. When he does sneak out, he always comes back having made another friend amongst all the other toddlers. When yours is born, we should get them to meet."
