Smudging is a way of cleansing objects or people with smoke. You can usually find what are called smudge bundles in most magical supply stores, most often made out of sage. You light one end and make sure you get a good amount of smoke going before wafting the smoke over the object, or around the person, you are cleansing/purifying. Smudging is most often used with Native American rituals, but has been used with old Celtic and Norse rituals when a deep cleansing/purification is needed on top of whatever cleansing/purifying is done before the ritual begins.
