As she spoke, Syeira let a soft sigh flutter past her maw. True, Denahi was free of his slavery - but deep down, in the cruelest and darkest part of her soul, Syeira had hoped that maybe he would remain there. Remain in the hell of a firekin's slavery, a toy, a pet, a tool. For all the horror and pain that he had put their family through - for all the pain that he had put their mother through. In some ways, Syeira could only see Denahi as a heartless, selfish being. She forgot, sometimes, that he was a father now. But even his children were more like him than she could imagine - the one she had met seemed in every likeness to him, and she harbored a grudge for her as well.

Anything that ever remotely reminded her of Denahi made her sick.

"That means he'll be in the pridelands," she whispered quietly, her eyes flickering up towards Uumi, "because he certainly isn't at home. Where else would he go but to his family?" She stopped in her words, eyes narrowing rather unkindly, "the family he wants." She stopped, again, however - when she heard those words from the lioness mouth.

Once they reached the edge of the watering whole, she stepped back, away, and let those eyes fall upon Uumikaji. Their expression was clear, sharp, and meant for him to see only: It was his place to comfort her. Syeira couldn't do it for him, but it needed to be done.

Uumi's eyes grew ever glazed over as Kib spoke on. Each word was making him feel sick, he wanted to tell her to shut up. To stop speaking. He couldn't though. The way she stumbled over her words ment one of two things... She was still stupid in her speaking... or she was rather upset and trying to hide it. Which was stupid, because anyone coming as a slave from the firekin lands would be upset.

He spotted Sye's look and felt sicked still. Calming others was not Uumi's forte. "I've only gone back home once or twice. I live in Sye's lands now. Kind of different from the pridelands. Cooler, often. Or perhaps windier." He was controlling his breathing, taking careful breaths. He hated comforting. What if he said one wrong thing and set her off? "....."

He watched her drink a moment and moved to the water's edge as well. He sat slowly, thinking about what he was supposed to say. "Kib... everything will be okay now." He breathed out quietly, and seriously. He really did believe things would turn out okay for her now.

She lapped up the water, ears swivelled back so that she could listen to her companions. If she closed her eyes and listened to their voices she could almost pretend she was at home again, that place of green and blue. It was comforting and frightening to be reminded of the place she had once yearned to leave.

Strange that the one place she had been desperate to leave was the place she now craved to see again.

Thinking of returning to her old home scared her though, for what would her parents say when they set eyes on her? Did she have siblings she hadn't even met? What would Mchele think? Would they hate her for not returning to them as she had promised? Would they banish her from her sight so that she lived as nothing more but a rogue for the rest of her life.

It was at this point that Uumi's try at comforting her began and she paused in her drinking to listen. Water dripped form the corners of her mouth and splattered against the murky surface of the pool. Her eyes watched the ripples extend outwards so that she didn't have to focus on anything else.

"That...that s-sounds nice." A cooler place to live sounded wonderful. She was fed up with the heat that burned her skin and pads, she craved a cool breeze and cool grass to lay on. She was fed up with sand that irritated her skin, bit at her eyes and ruined her fur. "A nice place t-to live." He was lucky, very lucky and she would tell him so. "M-maybe one day I-I can visit...maybe." Her voice sounded more doubtful than hopeful but atleast she was showing a little optimism for her future.

Aware now that the red lion had moved closer she released a soft sigh, letting her eyes move from her own wobbled reflection to stare at Uumi's. He was older yes but he was still the same. When she looekd into his eyes she saw not the adult but the little grouchy cub she had called friend.

She saw Rocky.

"T-they were right Rocky." She sniffed, "I wasn't s-strong enough or s-smart enough to be a r-rogue. W-what if they d-don't want me at home if I r-return? T-they probably h-hate me or f-forgot me. I'll be h-homeless. M-maybe it's for t-the best that I stay here..."

She was thankful that Sye had been adamant on helping her reach the water hole. Thankful that they had made her see sense. Some lions were born to be rogues, some pride members. And others...? Well some lions like herself were born simply to serve, to be slaves. Or so she now believed.

Syeira knew that Uumi could only comfort the other lioness so much - and for that comfort that he actually did try to offer her, she was thankful. There was a time before when Uumikaji wouldn't even have thought twice about reassuring someone or trying to calm them down. There was a time when it was Uumi that was often the cause of the discomfort. She smiled, weak though it was, at the progress he had made. True, even she had changed, but she hadn't been sure that she would ever see the day when some sort of affection came from him - disturbingly smal though it may be in this situation.

That's when she stepped in, to help in the conversation, though she didn't even know the lioness well at all - not more than a couple passing glances as a cub, anyway. "You were strong enough to be a rogue," she said quietly, standing next ot her - her image strong in the rippling pool. It made her said, the image of a strong, healthy lioness next to that of a meager slave, "because you have been strong enough to withstand the torture of a firekin's enslavement." She smiled, weak again, in the direction of Kib, "many lions die in those lands - but you haven't. If anything, you have only proven your strength where many lions can not. You're better than many of the rogues I know." She nodded, tail flicking as she glanced back to Uumi.

"And your family will not treat you that way. You cannot help what happened. Besides, pridelanders are not firekin. You've been here so long that you forget that outside those borders, lions are born with kindness in their hearts," she said in a low, gentle voice, soothing. There was no telling what had come over the usually icy lioness. Perhaps the missing son had left her soft hearted for the time being. Or maybe Syeira just really despised Firekins. True, she was unkind with her words, but she never broke down a lion like this.

Not like this.

"Syeira is right, Kib. You're not weak. Maybe you're just fit to be a pride cat. What's wrong with that?" His gaze was on the sky, his tail flicking uneasily back and forth. "And I don't think your mother will hate you, or any of that. A.. a mothers love.. is unconditional.." He muttered the last part, letting it trail off, still staring hard at the same spot. If only Uumi wasn't so awkward all of the time.

He glanced her way, then towards Sy in a questioning manner. "Im sure if you're not ready for our homelands or you decide you can not stay in them... welkl there is always the Kusini lands. Where Sy and I live."

And with that statement he moved away from the two females, a little bit off to the side, and got himself a drink. Being nice still made him feel very uncomfortable. He layed down slowly, able to see them from the corner of his eyes but also able to look at the sky, which was far more interesting than anything else, right now.

They were right, her mother and father would never stop loving her. She had always been their little princess and they most likely missed her as much as she missed them. She closed her eyes and imagined their faces; kindly, gentle and loving. It was those faces she had been greeted with when her eyes had first opened.

The words of her friends now brought her great joy and happiness. It felt good to finally be praised instead of thought of as nothing but an inferior. She turned to face them, her eyes somehow regaining their life.

"Thankyou." She dipped her head slowly, ears folding back in a sort of respectful bow. "Thankyou f-for being here." They had met by pure coincidence but atleast Sye and Uumi could leave the desert knowing they had done some good.

They had gievn a lioness back her hope, and that was perhaps the greatest gift they could ever give.

"T-thankyou for bringing the smiles b-back."

She watched as Uumi moved away but did not forget his words, his invitation. He wouldn't mind if one day she came to stay with him at these Kusini lands? "Maybe o-one day if I es-escape I'll come stay. I'd l-like that very much." Already her stutter had eased off very slightly though perhaps it would always linger in her words.

With a soft smile, Syeira gave the young firekin slave a bow of her head - her eyes glistening in the reflect light of the sun. Though, as much as she was proud to have helped someone in such a need, that burning desire to find her misplaced son was burning a hole in her heart. She now understood how her mother felt - why she felt so badly over Denahi's leaving. If her mother had felt half this horrible, Denahi deserved to be slaughtered.

"Kib," she said quietly, offering a weak smile, though not one that seemed to suggest actual happiness, "I'm glad to have helped you - you need someone to bring the smiles back, but it's important now that Uumi and I find our son. You understand that, don't you?"

She glanced to Uumi, then back to the lioness, giving a weak nuzzle - an affectionate gesture that one wouldn't usually see coming from the icy princess of the kusini lands, "but you're welcome to come stay in our lands any time. We'd be more than glad to have you in our pride if you could get away one day."

She took a step back, nodding slowly to her once more, "one day, our paths will cross again, I'm sure of it." And with a weak smile, she gave a glance to Uumi - one that clearly said to say his goodbyes. She moved a bit away from the two, staring off at the horizon - she'd leave them a moment of privacy for whatever was to be said.

She was just ready to find Taabu.

Ah yes, They had to keep moving. After Sye said her goodbye Uumi moved hesitantly toward the sickly lioness. "You know... I never believed I would have seen you again. I never planned on going back to the pridelands, to live there anyways. You always said we'd meet up again... and I guess we did." Oh great he was rambling. Usually only Sy could get him rambling. "Saying goodbye the first time was a lot easier." Cheesey, cheesey, cheesey! Uumi was just appaled by those words. When they were juveniles... even when he was an adolesant he would have never said such corny crap. "But this isn't a real good bye. Because I'm holding you to your word.. come to the kusini lands soon." He lightly nuzzled into her, more breifly than Sye had. After that he moved away before listening to anything she had to say. Well, even as he changed he stayed the same. He just hoped his most dear friend would turn out okay.

"Are you ready to go, then?" He asked Sy, brows raising slowly.

Chapter 3 - Familiar Faces

PostPosted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 2:59 pm

It was only a gentle word that answered Uumi as Sye let her body fall into the gentle grace of a walk, a sway in her steps, "Yes."

From that point forward, down the path that she hoped would eventually lead her to her son, she had fallen into a disturbing sort of silence. Her eyes concentrated either on the ground before her or the horizon that dangled before her in the distance, as if she were trying to imagine the rugged outline of pride rock even from the miles away she still was.

She couldn't imagine what it felt like for her mother, not knowing where her son was, not knowing if he would ever come home. She now understood why the lioness looked so sad whenever the name was brought up, whenever she had the inoppurtune chance of thinking of the eldest of her children. Though Syeira was graced with a son many times more greatful of her - she could still imagine now what it felt.

Experiencing this for years could break her down just like it was breaking her own mother. With a sigh, after this thought, she glanced to the lion that sauntered at her side. She moved closer, more into his space - in need of some sort of comfort from him at least, though her eyes met his.

"Why do you think he left, Uumi?"

Uumi's gaze met her own, relieved that she finally broke the silence. "I'm not sure." He murmered, watching her. He rubbed his body against hers slightly. "I suppose only Taabu knows that." He couldn't begin to fathome the idea of Taabu running away. Wasn't he happy with Sy, with his grandparents? What if when they found him... they he wanted to stay in that place?

Taabu had been the whole reason Uumi had stayed. Well, appearance why it was. Inside Uumi could name a few more reasons, but it didn't matter. He wouldn't have an excuse to stay if Taabu left he and Sy.... or would he? His gaze lingered on Sy, though it wasn't worried about Taabu. It was thoughtful, questioning. "Both he and I love you, Sye. He's fine... he probably had some crazy idea about my mom or something." He said slowly, not muttering the words. 'I love you' had become a lot easier to say, love in general had been easier to say.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:56 pm

Syeira stopped her words for a moment, gazing for a long time at Uumi. She had only heard him say that a rare handful of times - times that usually seemed awkward for him. She smiled, for a moment, though it was weak - almost as if she was quite unsure of herself. Uumi and she had an odd relationship, one that she was sometimes dumbfounded over. She never quite knew if Uumi really loved her - or if he was just doing what he thought was right. For once in his life.

"Uumi," she said quietly, her eyes drifting back up to meet the pair that could be the complete polar opposite - although, the souls they hid were not quite so dffierent - and narrowed on them slightly in wonder, "do you think it might be because we're not the same kind of parents other cubs have?" She let out a little purr, letting it dance on her maw, though she didn't for one instant pull her body away from his own.

He would know what she meant by 'not the same'. After all, anyone with eyes could see the wierd relationship between them. They could probably feel it in the air.
