There was a thing called boredom.
Shiku and Tori where currently experiencing it. Well, the genie more than the quail boy. Tori seemed pretty happy with simpely "reading" the children books Zero had gotten for them both, looking at the pretty, colorful images.
Shiku, however, had found quick disinterest over them, and simpely floated idely, as his number one playmate was too captivated in his book to notice he was even existing at the moment. Sei wasn't one for playing, so that kept him stuck.
The genie frowned a bit, fluttering around the quail and poking him sightly. "Play."
"No." Was the answer. "After book."
Blah.

I think those things only happen to me.
Err, or well, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Adrian, and I was dumped most of Zero's young ones for babysitting while she took a small vacation... or so she says.
I expect to still be writting here in a month or so.
Now, im a magician. Unless her, I AM used to magical things blowing in my face.
...Perhaps too used. Whops, tangent.
I just wish she could have warned me those kids where liable to shoot up a few hours in the span of a second.
And that he was liable to go into EVERYTHING.
...Glass shattering means that I should go check my potion supplies... and well... pray for my sanity.

"...The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well."
While it was not the exact words, she had been quite caught off-guard when Tori and Shiku had both wanted a bedtime story, which the only thing close enough to it she knew was, well... Alice in Wonderland.
"Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next."
This story was... a bit wierd, Tori thought. Rabbits didn't have pocketwatches, didn't they ? Or maybe they did. He would make sure to check extra-hard next time he saw a white rabbit... To the genie, however, none of this seemed odd, but the usually hyperactive toddler seemed to be calmed down for a moment, curious about the story.
"First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book-shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs."
...Why didn't she just zoom down ? Oh, right, Shiku reminded himself, she was probabely like Tori. Not like mama, because mama could fly. But Tori couldn't. Right ? Hm.
The brown haired boy simpely yawned, wanting to hold on to know the story, but slowly slipping into sleep allready...
"She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labelled Orange Marmelade, but to her great disappointment it was empty. She did not like to drop the jar for fear of hurting somebody, so managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it."
How could someone hurt someone else with a jar ? Uh. The law of gravity was totally lost on both boys, and Shiku tried to hide a yawn.
"Well!, thought Alice to herself, after such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumbling down stairs! How brave they'll all think me at home! Why, I wouldn't say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!' (Which was very likely true.)"
She looked up, and both boys where asleep. Smiling a bit to herself, she carried them both to their respective rooms, and left a kiss on their foreheads before leaving.

But then he did it again last night. Heaven save me...

"Shi-ku !!!"
Uh oh.
Spotted in deed, the little genie darted off his pierch into the cupboard right before Zero could catch him, giggeling. The reploid seemed a bit tired, doing her best to keep holding Tori, who looked mighty confused about all this to begin with.
"God, stop that, you'll hurt yourself, or break something !!!!" Zero was visibely at her wit's end as far at trying to make him stand STILL was concerned.
And of course, what had to happen happened, the genie having adopted a too quick flight cruise and smacking head first on the wall, and falling on the ground, the surge of pain sending him into wails.
And, at seeing her brother hurt, Tori started to cry as well, upset by all of this.
"Oh god, Shi..." She ducked, scooping up the toddler. It didn't look like he had hit himself too hard, thank godness. That didn't stop both boys from crying, however, and Tori was clinging to Shiku like if their lives depended on it.
"Shhhh, dear... Are you okay ?"
"H-Hu..." The genie replied in between sobs.
"There, there..." She gave a small kiss on his forehead, and rubbed it a little. "All better ?"
"A- A bit..."
"Shiku better !" Tori chipped, immediatly stopping his crying. How... odd. But those two always seemed to be closer to each other than from the rest of the family.
"And this is why you don't fly around that fast." Zero announced a bit sternly, poking the toddler's nose, sending the quail boy in a fit of giggles at the reaction of the changeling. "Allright ?"
"...'right..." He answered, a bet reductanly.

Yaaaaawwwwwnnnn...
Nebula didn't like babysitting duty. She really didn't. Expecially with most young kids.
But since she hadn't had to do it for a long time, Zero had given her no room to turn it down. At least she had just one.
Trying to multi-task playing her game and watching a toddler wasn't easy. Expecially when said toddler was the kind that kept trying to grap the comtroller. And also the kind that could float up to get it no matter how far from him you held it.
Nebula pondered if strapping him down would work... but then Zero would kill her. And this wouldn't be a good thing.
And there was the option that he might be able to go intengible. He had never done it... but hey, a genie. That sounded logical he MIGHT be able to do it.
Shiku was blissfully unaware of the frustration of the teenager that he was nested on the knees of, all he realised is that trying to get the black thing she was holding made her tilt into wierd angles.... and it was FUN !
Nebula was actually tilted into a 45 degree angle to the right when Zero came in, sipping soda from a straw while holding the controller as far from the little blue hands as possible, and ignoring the little toddler's giggles, as cute as they where.
The scene made the reploid laugh, and the teenager send a glare, which diverted her carefully divided attention and sent her right into the usual random bottomless pit(tm) of video game fame with a few words that should not be uttered in presence of young children.
"Language, Neb." Zero sighed, rolling her eyes.
"Like you're any better."
"I don't CUSS with the kids."
"You SO do !!!!"
Shiku found this terribely amusing for some reason, and laughed.

Things are just... confusing lately. At least for me. Thanksfully, it doesn't seem like it's spreading to the kids.
Shiku seems to be calming just an hair... maybe he feels that im not really as happy as usual ? I wouldn't be too surprised if he did... This kid keeps on suprising me... He's amazing.
What did I do to deserve sutch a wonderful, varied family, again ? Just one look at the kids, and I find myself able to smile again.
Right now, Shiku is hovering around my head... I think he's trying to understand what I am typing. So cute, really... Maybe I should attempt to start teaching him and Tori how to read ? Ahhh, maybe. I don't know if they're too young still, or not. It's hard to judge these things when you where created with basic knowledge, I guess.
But I won't know unless I try, right ?

Zero was busy with things, and Nebula was babysitting Shiku. It was a day much like usual, much like the previous ones - not too warm, not too cold. The teenager sat in her beanchair as usual, the small blue genie nested in between her folded knees, looking a bit too sleepy to indulge in his game of "let's try to steal the controller while she is playing." The girl herself... didn't look too well herself, but he didn't really notice it. She was a bit warmer than usual.... but he didn't think anything of it. In his mind, nothing could ever happen to Nebula and Zero. They where the two constants in his life, the two that would always be there no matter what.
Nebula, however, frowned. She wasn't feeling well at all, and knew it. The last few days... where a slow decline, and now it seemed to be at her worst... at least she didn't think she could get any worse. She felt so dizzy, almost seasick... She sighed, not having wanted to do this, and centely stirred the toddler that was asleep.
"Shiku... ?"
He yawned a bit, and glanced up at her curiously. She looked so tired... "Neb-Neb okay... ?"
"No. Im not." She answered, her voice growing faint. "...Go get Zero..."
It didn't take more for the little genie to bolt from his nesting place and fly off as fast as he could manage, two emotions that he was not used to feel, panic and dread, mixing inside him. Emotions he could only remember feel once in his life, and that he did not even know the name of. What was wrong with the colorful teenager ?
He flew up the stairs, then immediately darted left. The first thing Zero knew was a small bundle of paniced genie almost attaching herself to her face.
"God, Shiku ! What are you..."
"Come !" He shieked, taking a sleeve and attempting to damn well drag her off by himself. "Quick !"
...Okay, this WASN'T the toddler's usual mischeif. He looked downright paniced. This was enough to get Zero moving, and a tumbeling down the stairs, hot on the genie's tail... pun non intended.
What they saw made them both freeze in place, as if time had stopped. Nebula was on the ground... motionless.
Zero was the first to move, darting to the teenager the fastest she could manage. Thank the gods, she was still breathing. But she wasn't moving... neither was she answering her calls. Nebula has a very weak sleep... the smallest sound usually awoke her.
So it was clear, in the reploid's mind, that she was not asleep. She did the only thing she could think of then, gentely plucked her from the floor she had felt on, carrying her in her arms.
"Shirren, watch the kids !" She yelled, simpely, before making her way out to the car, a small, very worried blue boy in tow.

Days had passed, and not much had changed.
Nebula seemed mostly stable, after Zero had drove her to the hospital. She wasn't a fan of white, sterile places... but it was the only thing she could think of.
She sat sillently on a chair, waiting to see the doctor come out of the hallway for what must have been hours now. The last few days had been blurs, and now she wanted answers.
Shiku was resting, tail curled around Zero's lower body as his upper torso rested on her back and shoulders, also sillent, sencing very well that his mother wasn't exactly in the mood for small talk. He looked as worried as a toddler could - his grasp on the situation was ratter small, since it had all happened so fast.
Nebula wasn't going to die, was she ?
Raising her hand to stabilise the toddler, she got up from her seat when she saw the man in white come by. This also managed not to startle Shiku and send him in a fit of screaming. She said nothing, but the small frown that had taken place on her face over the last few days refused the budge.
"She seems to be... stabilising, mostly... Drifting in and out of conciousness. She hasn't been able to help us much with what could have caused this."
"Can we see her ?" Zero's voice was even, neutral, as if it might have came out as a literal order if she hadn't been watching herself.
"Your friend is kept under close observation... I am afraid that it isn't possible."
Her right hand, limp at her side, balled into a loose fist, but her face remained of stone.
"Want see Neb-Neb..." Shiku said softly, as if afraid to upset someone, but then seemed to forget all about that. "Want see Neb-Neb NOW !"
"Miss, could you ask your child to be qui-"
"He's perfectly able to hear you, and far from stupid." She snapped right at the man. "He's got a very good right to be upset. Im sorry, kiddo." She sighed, taking Shiku in her arms to snuggle him, as if it would bring him confort, and his eyes began to water. "Look, I've been in here almost 24 hours a day for the last 3 days. Would it kill you to give me some info ?"
"It is restricted information, im afraid it can only be given to family..."
"Neb-Neb family." Shiku grumped, shooting a glare at the doctor, almost mimicing Zero's expression. If the situation hadn't been like it was, it would have been pretty funny.
"Unless you want to go around telling things to the stars, we're the closest to family she has." Cryptic indeed, but it seemed to have it's effect on the man.
"She seems healthy... which is the odd thing. Alot of fevers, and physical weakness... Almost as if her body was missing something, but nothing is showing up on the blood samples..."
Zero took in all this information in sillence, then sighed, shaking her head softly. "Then that just might be it... You see... Nebula isn't human. She only looks like she is."
This didn't surprise the doctor in the least. In fact, he almost kicked himself for not having thought about it in the first place. "Then, what is she ?"
"...A fallen star."

It was pretty late, expecially by toddler standards... But Shiku couldn't sleep. And if he could easely have escaped from a crib, escaping from the small, child's bed that remplaced it wasn't hard at all.
However, he did not go far - he simpely sat on the side of the window, glancing up at the stars. The explaination Zero had given him ran into his mind...
When you look at the stars from here, they look very close to each other, don't they ? Well, in reality, stars are very, very far away from each other. So far that they always seem all alone. So, stars get very lonely, up there with no one to talk to... So some fall to planets. Not many actually survive entering's a planet's atmosphere to begin with... and for them to take a form similar to the one of the people of the planet they felt onto, it takes a long time as well. Those who manage are called fallen star. I found Nebula years after she had landed here, when she had finally managed to take an humanoid form. She was very confused, and had no name... so I named her Nebula and helped her get used to Gaia. This is a bit of a secret... so you need not to tell anyone, okay ?
"...Neb-Neb came far away... ?" He pondered, raising a small blue hand as if to touch one of the lonely stars that remained in the sky. He remembered far away... He loosely remembered two people like him. So faintly... He knew, instinctively, that those people and him had a link to each other... but he couldn't tell how.
And as much as Zero tried to tell him things where okay... He also could see that Nebula wasn't getting better. In fact... it seemed quite the opposite. A slow, but visible decline.
Nebula... couldn't die. There had to be something he could do... But he didn't know where to look, or where to begin. He had to think of something, if no one else could. So while she looked remotely human... She was a star. He had to think...
There was a bit of a blue and golden powder forming where the tip of his tail rested against the windowledge... and he peered at it when he did notice. Again... ? It seemed to happen alot lately. Zero had no idea where it was, but it was pretty. All pretty and sparkly. Like Nebula looked like sometime.
...
Maybe... he could make a gift for Nebula with it ? He had ALOT of it now. He could make a pretty picture for her with it and glue. And give her some of it in a little bag so she could do what she wanted with it. It might make her happy...
The toddler smilled to himself, gathering what had felt into a little bag, then fluttering off to get some rest.
Tommorow they had to visit again, and he would need to get up early.

Shiku had been up bright and early the next day and, armed with black construction paper, glue, and the glitter-like thing his tail emitted, he went on to create a masterpiece. It was a black sky full of stars - some golden, some a bit blue-ish. He hadn't bothered making a ground, and he had barely put the glue tubes away before Zero had been up and ready, and they had been off to see the sick teenager.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...You said we would be able to see her today." Zero's voice was icy as she glared at the doctor, Shiku's blue head poking from behind his mother's shoulder.
"Yes, but miss, you need to understand - it seems like her state have worstned a bit overnight, and I am afraid this might not be a good thing."
What ? After all this and making the pretty gifts, the mean man in white wouldn't let him see her ? Oh, Shiku was having none of this, and, rolled sheet under one arm, he bolted throught the hallway, making his way to the door of what he reconized as Nebula's room after seeing a glimpse of her sleeping.
"W-What ?! Miss, the kid !"
"Oh, you've ever tried to catch a toddler ? It's even worse when they can fly, really." Zero gave her best smartass grin, visibely not intending to catch or stop her adoptive son in the least. "Beside, he's allready gotten his way in, and if you barge in, he'll probably freak out. How about you let me handle it ?"
Well, when you where given a perfect opportunity.... use it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even at his tender age, Shiku had come to the conclusion that he hated hospitals. They where all too blend, the rooms all white, too.... clean not to look alien. He slid into the doorframe in sillence, floating his way to the bed slowly as he watched the form asleep in the bed. It was Nebula indeed... But she looked so much paler, and she was asleep. Which was odd because Nebula never slept at that hour.
A michevious smile drew itself on his face as he swerved to the right of the only bed of the room, just high enough to lean torward her ear and whisper. "Neb-Neb~~"
"Ngh..." Came the half asleep reply. "What, kiddo... ?" It was their morning ritual - and it didn't occur to her until she was a bit more awake that it had been a ritual that hadn't happened in the past few weeks. Once she did, orange eyes went wide, and a genuine smile formed. "What are you doing here, kiddo ?"
"Outran the mean man in white." Shiku pouted, which made Nebula laugh. "Yes, a very very mean man, kiddo." It quite surprised her that he hadn't attempted yet - that, or Zero had become very good at keeping the kid still. Which was basically impossible.
"Made this for you !" He gave the best proud grin a toddler could manage as he handed the roll of black construction paper to her. Nebula slowly shifted to sit in her bed, leaving a nod to Zero, who was standing in the doorframe, before unrolling it. "Oh, Shiku, that's so pretty !" She was genuinely happy - this totally out-rocked all the girly flowers she got from the old ladies and sutch. She ran a pale finger on one of the glitter stars, only for the glitter to somehow remain attached to her finger, leaving the glue on the paper. It was then that her face turned pensive which, in turn, made Zero raise an eyebrow.
"Where d'you get it, kiddo...?" She asked, quite puzzeled.
"Made it~" The toddler announced -very- proudly, visibely oblivious to the teenager's reaction.
"Yeah, I know, and it's the best thing I ever saw." She grinned. "I mean... the glitter, where did you get that ?"
Shiku blinked a bit. "Came from me." He announced, his tail wriggeling a bit. "Drop from tail... Dunno what it is."
Nebula blinked, then had to stiffen in a laugh. "Kiddo... that's not glitter..."
"What then ?" He peered, visibely very curious. Zero didn't know, but it looked like Nebula did !
"That's stardust." She announced, tossing a braid or two away from her field of vison. "Stardust floats in the sky and attaches to stars. It doesn't exist here... If you can make some, then..." She grinned, poking his nose playfully. "Then it means we probably found what you're supposed to be~ Probably a star djinn, or an night elemental of some short."
Then, it occured to her. Stardust. Not present in gaia in normality. Her sickness... And how Shiku tended to make it a little bit better, even before he started actually producing it...
It took every inch of her self-control not to smack her head on the wall right then. "Kiddo, you got some more of it around ?"
"Uh uh." It was only then that Shiku had actually been wearing a belt - with some pouches attached. It took a few tugs to free what seemed to be the only one that contained something, and he looked at it. "Was planning to make another pretty for Neb-Neb..."
"Kiddo..." She grinned, then leaned slowly to be the one to whisper in his ear. "Don't tell the mean man in white or Zero any of this - But I think it might be what I need to feel better."
"...Really ?!?" The happy shiek made the attempt at sheath to be mostly useless. "Kay then !" He let the pouch drop in Nebula's open hand. "All I have, tho... That enough ?"
The pouch was relatively heavy - proof that there was alot of dust inside. "I think it will."
"Now, miss, enough of that non-sence ! Can't you see she is tired ?! Get out !" The reason why Zero had been standing in the doorway was now very obivious. Nebula grinned. "Ill be fine, kiddo. You should go back with Zero so that the bad man in white stop screaming, okay ?"
"See you again soon ?" Shiku had allready started to drift away - not happy about the fact, mind you.
"Yes. I promise."
