Usability (my specialty is Web Site / Application Design, but it can apply to any field) is a matter of common sense, being aware of how things are used (Use-ability), how design decisions affect how people use whatever it is you're building - including / especially those with disabilities - and coming up with the best solution for all aspects (this is the academic and experiential aspect). For web sites, this includes functionality, visual design and layout, cross-browser compatibility (display, differences in function), etc. Chances are, if you're using a site and can't find what you're looking for, or are wondering "what's going on here", you've encountered a usability issue. Unfortunately, so many sites are so badly done, and have been for so long, bad design has become "standard"... then add in the idea of "design for design's sake" or the "cool factor", plus programmers who basically want to run the show (so many of them make design decisions without even thinking about it!), and suddenly your site is utterly useless rolleyes
Gah! I feel like I'm talking to my design team again!! ... sorry... redface

I sincerely dislike the mile of space at the bottom.

I must be seeing a different page than everyone else because all of my links and navigation bars work, and my bottom of page is full of Gaia A to Z. I probably do not need to bore people with the fact that me having really bad eyesight means the more white is actually very helpful in my case. Having been on gaia very regularly since Novenber 2004, though, the one thing I can almost guaruntee is "This too shall (probably) pass"
wahmbulance oh, and the few new smiley images are fun... redface

I like the new layout for the most part. The only thing that I don't like is how the visited links don't change colors so you know they've been clicked on.
Oooh, has anyone noticed that you can shake trees, bushes and rocks in town now and get gold? Or am I just slow and hadn't realized it yet? rofl
*goes back to lift some more rocks*

redface Thanks guys for suggesting I offer my services to Gaia concerning this stuff... I did offer, and I've not heard back from them. I don't expect to wink . Sorry if my rants annoyed anyone. There are many things about this redesign that just got under my skin - especially having done this for so many years for so many clients (international base). It does seem that Gaia is addressing some of the issues (at least not the top nav bar is semi-working; would still like to be able to sidestep those intermediate pages!!). Anyway....
Didn't know about the trees and rocks, but I'll have to check it out... it's been forever since I've been in towns!
