I play only alto sax, but I'm looking to play soprano in the next couple of years.
Sad thing is, I'm the only alto sax player our band has right now, and our Tenor sax player is a senior, so he'll be gone next year. Pretty sad, but hopefully we'll get more sax players next year. Though, I kid of like being first chair by default. xp

A good friend of mine, who plays alto sax and oboe, can play the soprano. She's got a bajillion instruments at her house (including three flutes, a piccolo, two recorders, an alto recorder, a french horn, a couple trumpets, a myraid of string instruments, a drumset, bongos, several saxes, and a bunch of other things that I can't even remember), so she can pretty much play what she wants. She likes soprano better than alto, but she can never play the soprano because there's rarely a soprano part in jazz band, or for anything, really. In fact, she's only played it one time that I've been aware of.

Mine's a Yamaha, I mean it's not that great, but it's better than thewConn, ya know. Yeah, I've been having problems wiht my octave key for a few years now, but I've always been able to just tap it back in place and it'll work. But right in the middle of Jazz band, it just popped off. *sigh* oh well I should have it back this week.

I've got a Yamaha too. It's new, just got it Friday. And yeah, it's a lot better than the Conn. I know a girl who goes to a pretty prestigious arts college, and she plays a Yamaha sax. She's friggin' awesome, too. Best tenor player the school's ever seen.

In any case, I hope for a fast recovery for your sax so that you don't have to play that Conn anymore. >.<

Thanks guys! I got it back a few days ago. The octave key is a different one than I had before. It's not the original (they couldn't get that one to go back on) so I'm still getting used to it. But I'm still happy to get it back! biggrin

That's how it pretty much is at mu school. We have four saxes total and I'm a senior and the rest are freshman, so I was first chair by default too.

I'm 1st chair alto sax as a Sophmore in our lower band. I have two other sophmores under me and about 5 Freshman. Our higher band has two Junior 2nd Altos and 1 Senior 1st alto. He's so fricken' good at the alto it's quite sad. I only play alto, but I also use to play bass/regular clarinet.

I'm... well, we don't have chairs in band, but if we did, I'd be second tenor in my class, because there's only two of us. XD And the other tenor player's REALLY good (he ALWAYS knows his parts, so... yeah), so he'd SO kick my butt in chair auditions. No contest. I'm first tenor in jazz 2, but that's kind of default, since I'm the ONLY tenor in jazz 2. ^^;;

It's only places like this that you really see the differences between Canada and America. Here in Canada, we don't do the first chair/ second chair thing. We just grab parts. And we rarely get the same thing twice in a row. Though, I generally fight for seconds. I like them. I'd rather play melody than harmony, but I know harmony is where I can make the biggest difference in our band.

Also, we don't have marching bands here in Canada. Well, that's a lie. We don't have marching bands in SCHOOL. I am in a marching band, but it's through Cadets. 333 Lord Beaverbrook Air Cadet Squadron Band!! w00t!!

At Cadets, we also have a drill team and a guard. The drill team is fun because it's just drill. No instruments, no rifles, just prescision drill. ((Hence the term "prescision drill team")) Our guard rifles weigh like 12 pounds. It's hard to get used to them, but everyone feels that if we get lighter ones it'll wussify the guard. It's pretty much guaranteed that someone will come out of practice with a broken finger and we all get big bruises. Hehehe....fun fun...

I'm in my school's concert band. Senior concert band, that is....*ahem*...

No one's posted here in awhile so I figured I'd say something to add a post.

My band's going to Marching contest tomorrow. I can't wait!

I play sop/alt/ten/bari - never had a chance to play bass saxophone. I own a 1940s Martin Indiana - precursor to the "Naked Lady" Martin - the horn is butt ugly, but plays like a dream.

I want to learn tenor. I don't play a sax yet, though. I play clarinet, and tenor's in the same key, so it will be easy to learn; I'm probably going to play it for pep band this year.

It's really hard to go from clarinet to tenor though, I tried that and it was really hard because the tenor is so much lower than the clarinet. It's easier to just go to alto sax, thats what I ended up doing. It's in a different key, but the fingerings are pretty much the same.

So the fingerings for a clarinet and a sax are pretty much the same?? O.o *ish confused sweatdrop *
