Oh yes, I relatively despise HSM. The only one who can really sing is Vanessa Hudgens, and maybe Tisdale is a tiny bit OK. But the majority of the music is, yes, painful, and it is not even about a musical, just the auditions! The plot stinks and the characters are totally unrealistic. And what is up with Zack Efron, he is far from that hot. And the sequel? Wow, I actually fear for my life!

I think it is an acceptable movie but it is not like life as I have seen it at all. I mean, who could stand that teacher? And what director would trust people she hates with making the sets for a show? nevermind that, the thing that sickens me it that there is a stage version of it that you can get the script for so your school can perform it. ew.
Yeah. it's not like real life at all. and as for a stage version... is this supposed to be a comedy?

Its not a good movie and its not a good play... i totally agree with the origional post. Disney has come out with better movies...all of their old ones are good..not the ones made recentely.........

we have to do that for my schools musical and its going to suck so bad..all of the scene changes in FRONT of the audience! no black outs and no closed curtain changes!!! OMG! who ever wrote the play needs to be beaten with a rench or hammer!

THis is why HSM pisses me off, it's a good idea! I think that actually sounds pretty cool, but it's gona suck! They're gonna make it sugary instead of dark.
The thing is, HSM is not realistic what-so-ever. But that's disney. I just wish they would've made it 'Junior High' so that it wouldn't be such an insult to highschoolers!

And to so bluntly name it 'High School Musical' is just stupid.

I haven't seen HSM, but I have read a plot review. And I actually want to see it, just for the expierence.

I watched the movie once, but was not a fan. i think that part of the problem was the streotyping. My drama teacher is nothing like that woman in the movie. There was also the issue of all of the pretty people. It is pretty rare for a mathlete to look like Vanessa Hudgens. However, I did think that the concept was cute...but predictable. The whole time I just wanted the two leads to kiss, but since it was for younger kids, they didn't. I agree that the music and dancing was lacking.

I am totally disgusted with that movie.
Seeing as I am from Utah, where it is filmed, it makes me sick to think that a production company would even consider making that.
The lead boy that everyone says is hot..no..he can't sing very good, he can't really act.
Get rid of the HSM!!!!!!!!!
Like a few before me have stated, its all sterotypes.
The "hot" basketball star who gets the girl.
EW!

I.....well, let's put it this way: If I just listened to the music of both shows, I'd LOVE it.
Otherwise, it frustarates me.
I will say, though, that despite the cheesiness of it, the second one was far more acceptable to me as a musical. The first one seemed too staged, too unnatural. The second one worked the songs in much easier.

I fxxing LOVE Mr. Curtis (my director)! We were discussing HSM yesterday. He brought it up for some reason and I was like "If you ever put on High School Musical, I wouldn't go near it. I wouldn't audition, help backstage, or even watch it". He said that didn't surprise him, I have good taste, and he'd never dream of doing that. We then discussed how scary it was that millions of licenses to perform HSM at schools had been sold and how that was completely disgusting. He said even if he DID want to put it on, virtually every school in the USA is doing it. We're being awesome and putting on Jekyll and Hyde.

What sickens me about HSM is particularly the music. BAD POP HITS AHOY. Also, the director character pissed me off. I mean, I'm sure dillusional directors like that exist, but I doubt they're the norm. In the past 5 years or so, I've had 6 directors, and only one was anything like that. He wasn't really even a director, either. He was our librarian in the middle school and somehow thought he could write a good dinner theatre script.
(our 7th grade history/geography teacher that also did a drama elective had successfully written one about our county history that was freakin' awesome...and Mr. Butz tried to do another one about our county, but 1. he couldn't write good plays, and 2. Mrs. Aldrich had already done everything interesting our county had to offer)

Quote:
My biggest problem with East High is its idealistic social dynamics. This problem manifests itself in two ways: 1. Everybody is nice (with the possibly exception of Sharpay): In any high school, you will find that this is patently untrue. High school is quite possibly the most Machiavellian, socially difficult portion of anybody's educational career. Allow me to present you with an example from the musical and contrast that with what would happen in real life. Example: Gabriella and Troy start to develop a crush on each other. In the world of High School Musical, nobody looks down on this and the two get to sing as many love duets as they want. In the real world, Troy's fitness on the Basketball court would have made him such a chick magnet that a "nerd" like Gabriella would have virtually no chance with him, and even if she did magically secure his attention, every jealous girl in the school would spread malicious rumors about her behind her back until she had to break up with Troy just so people wouldn't mutter "Slut" under their breath whenever she walked past.

2. Nobody kisses in this movie: I'm sorry to say that this is the most absurd element of the movie. In real life, Troy and Gabriella would have probably made out by the end of the film, if not had victory sex to celebrate triumph over Ryan and Sharpay. That, and nobody goes out with a guy because she likes his cookies, especially not a stuck-up Drama queen like Sharpay.

Quote:
So terrifyingly omnipotent is Sharpay that one could reasonably have expected her to have had a hand in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, or the assassination of John F. Kennedy, by the time the film was over.

Those reviewers have won my heart.

Apparently, there's talk of HSM 3.

Why....? The gods of theatre cannot seriously allow this to be true!

Agreed. Our favorite Phantom does NOT deserve to be associated with this garbage...
