I always thought calling someone ghetto meant you were calling them ignorant.
To some degree you are.

A ghetto is a neighborhood occupied by people of the same culture, like the jewish ghettos in Europe. No object can be "ghetto," I'm sorry but it doesn't work like that, just like no object can be "gay." Using ghetto as an adjective doesn't make any sense, and I really wish people would stop trying to do that.

A "ghetto" is a place. It's acually a place in which a certain class of people live at in one area. 3nodding The term "ghetto" is often misused and misplaced with the word "urban" 3nodding

Dictionary term for "ghetto": a part of a city, esp. a slum area, occupied by a minority group or groups

Isn't it possible though, that because people DO, (very oftenly, in fact), use the word "ghetto" as an adjective, that it has become an idiom?? We have seen other words and phrases missused and yet accepted as everyday parts of our language. 3nodding

As for "gay," I think that's quite different, because "gay" IS already an adjective. A long time ago, people began using it to refer to people's attributes, other than sexuality, and there inlies the problem.

Interestingly enough, I think that some people have realized their mistake and don't want to sound homophobic, so, (online, at least), I have seen people type "ghey" instead. That doesn't change the origin of the term or make it any less unacceptable when it's spoken, but at least it shows an attempt at an act of retribution. xd
