I'd definitely get upset if I lent a book out and someone wrote in it. I never write in my books - though I used to write my name in the cover...I really should keep doing it, though, 'cause I lend books out a lot of times.
Plus, if my name had been in it, maybe whoever took my book while I was away might have returned it...

It doesn't really bother me if books from the libary or other peoples books have writing in them but my personal ones are kept in pristine condition, no dong ear, and no writing. I used to hate it in high school and the teacher told me to underline a qoute becasue I couldn't do it and had to sit there and rewrite the words on a drifferent sheet of paper.

People don't generally borrow my books... you see, I live in idiotville, USA, and no one else likes to read here. If someone did write in one, though, I'd probably be a little miffed. Then again, I don't dog-ear, turn them upside-down, etc. I just like them in good condition.

Other than yearbooks, only if they are the author of the book.

I write in my own books when they are class books. It took me a few years to get over that block, but I do find it useful, especially if I'm writing a long paper on said book.
But my reading books? Those are not marked.
And NO ONE else has any business putting pen or pencil to my books!
Unless, as someone else mentioned, it is the author signing it wink

I can't stand it. I get irritated when I'm reading a book from a library and someone has written in it, and I get especially angry when people write things in my books. I don't even write my name in my books. If I lend them out I make them sign a piece of paper that says
"I, insert full name, swear that should .........'s copy of Insert title and author be ripped or written in to the point that ......... deams it destroyed I shall either replace the copy of that book with funds from my own pocket or shall give ........... sufficient funds to replace the book herself."
Yes, I know that seems a bit overboard but I once lent a book to a friend of mine and when it was returned the pictures were colored in (a manga) and a couple of the pages were completely ripped out. When I tried to get a new copy and/or money for it she claimed "it's your fault because you lent it to me in the first place so I didn't do anything wrong and you can't do anything."
Man, I'm getting pissed just thinking about it. stressed

Hahaha, Never would I let anyone lay hands on a book of mine, who would every hurt or write or ANYTHING BESIDES READ them... And those who do it without my permission know if anything happens I will not hesitate to A) Make them pay for a new one AND B) Will probably hurt them until they do...
My income is very low so I can't afford to replace books... but I got a knack for fixing them so people tend to GIVE me books thought to be 'beyond repair'. They won't be beautiful but they won't fall apart for a very long time. So many of my books look patchwork-y from the beginning. And for book people have written in, I've made a white-out-y like paint that blends in very nice with a eraser. So far it works for everything besides Sharpie.

In my mind it is high treason to write in a book. Those who borrow my books know I freak if it gets damaged in anyway. Noone ever writes in my books and I would have a fit if they did.

I buy a lot of used books so writing on them doesn't bother me that much so long as it is readable.

I rarely allow people to borrow my books. When I do, the first thing they are told is that if they mess it up the damage will be taken out of their hide. They will NOT dog-ear my pages!!! If they do not own a bookmark, I will provide them with one! If my book is returned to me in bad condition, you will incure m wrath and will NEVER be allowed to touch any of my books again.
THe only exception is myself. I use to be ademantly against marking in books, but after trying to do a few research papers and journals on books and keep notes on separate paper, I gave up on that notion. So if I'm writing a big report on the book, I will highlight and make notes.
