Ok, in relation to the "12 year olds liking Green Day" thing (I don't feel like quoting something that big...), I believe that some 12 year olds can completely comprehend every Green Day song better than some 16 to 18 year olds can. 12 year olds these days aren't the 12 year olds of 10 years go. It's not your age that really matters, unless you're near the age of 7 or something of the sort. Then yes, you probably don't understand the true meaning of a lot of the lyrics. However, I don't think children should be discouraged from liking Green Day. I feel that teens and adults should help children in discovering their own personal tastes and essentially... their identity. Questions should be asked in a kind and open tone, such as "Why do you like this particular song?", "How does it make you feel?", "What do you think it means/What does it mean to you?". Music can be such a wonderful tool of self discovery. Don't discourage a kid from liking Green Day just because you think they're trying to be "cool" and you want to be greedy and keep the title of a Green Day fan for yourself.
Same thing with your peers. Well, don't necessarily ask them those questions, but try to introduce them to older music and reveal the song meaning to them (like everyone has been saying earlier). Yes, some can be stubborn idiots, and if that occurs then you can either ignore them or in some cases bring proof. Such as the album thing. Why don't you just print out pics of all 9 albums? They might remain stubborn and not accept it, but what else can you do? Don't cause grief to yourself because of other's stupidity.
As for the whole American Idiot phenomena, yes, it can be annoying to me too when someone claims to be a huge fan of Green Day and knows only 1 - 4 of their songs, but I'm not going to stress myself out over it. To tell the truth, American Idiot sparred my interest in Green Day. I actually kick myself to this day because I had an opportunity to get into Green Day a little earlier. My dad encouraged me to buy International Superhits (which I actually thought was a joke at the time, I didn't think it was a hits album). The mistake I made was not actually listening to it. I played it once while I was doing some activity of some sort, and I didn't listen to the words or even have the music loud enough to hear the intricacies. I specifically remember that my only thought on Longview was "Oh, cool bass line". That's it. It horrifies me to this day. After I heard the song American Idiot, I was randomly glancing at my CD collection and was absolutely shocked to find that Green Day CD. I remember eagerly listening to it and realizing that the collection of songs on that hits album had so much meaning to me, especially Longview, which made me cry upon hearing it because it perfectly portrayed my childhood with the exception of having to find a job. I've found so much comfort and strength in that song, to know that someone felt the same and was able to say it. After that I decided to buy American Idiot, although I specifically chose not to tell people that I liked Green Day before I heard that album, because I knew one album was not enough to judge a band on. But I listened to AI and was blown away by it, so I've considered myself a Green Day fan ever since.
So as you can see, I haven't been a Green Day fan for long. But I am not in any way, shape, or form ashamed of that, because I know I can relate to the message. I think the American Idiot album got so many people to get into Green Day songs because they can specifically to that album. Yes, a lot of them might be bandwagon jumpers who just like it because it's the "in" thing right now. Yes, you will be hard pressed to meet someone in person who has actually listened to 1039 (so far the only person I know is my ex-boyfriend). But that is not fair means of judging a fan. If you truly can relate to the messages that Green Day communicates in their songs, you can like Green Day. You don't have to know every ******** word of every song that the trio ever wrote, or every little stunt they've done or woman they've slept with to be a fan. You just have to have an interest in the band's music and put in a tiny bit of effort to learn a little about it. I'm just sick of people being on their high-horse because someone is a new fan and doesn't know as much yet. We shouldn't be exclusionatory, but open and happy that people like Green Day. At least people are interested in good music. Really, what would you rather hear while shopping or doing something of the sort? A Green Day song or something by Simple Plan or Britney Spears? Although I accept other's musically preferences, I would much rather prefer a Green Day tune any day! (Even BOBD or Good Riddance).
Yeah... that's my extremely long post... eek '

How can someone who's had a relationship cause they are far too young by decades understand songs like 'worry rock' it just simply isnt possible. I'd say probably only a few percent of people claiming they are fans actually know what the songs are about and have expereinced anything like it.

well you cant hate someone just because they started liking Green Day after American Idiot- its not really their fault the werent around in the 90's. As long as They love other Green Day albums and take their music to heart and not just like them because they are "in". In my opinion, you are a true Green day fan if you'd still worship them if they were were considered a "loser" band. thats why all the true fans were in the early 90's because they were more underground, werent on the spotlight, and all the stupid preps didnt think they'd get popular.

American Idiot is great, but seriously, if you were a true green day fan, where were you a decade ago?? I agree with you guys who hate how their friends are changing to like green day just because of american idiot!

I agree with you guys who hate how their friends are changing to like green day just because of american idiot! LONG LIVE GREEN DAY! SONS OF BITCHES!!! YAAAAA! scream y'know but sometimes there's a good side and a bad side to wether your friedn start to actually like them.. or just fake liking them because they're at the top right now... but that's where people like us or whatever should show them old songs and make them listen to the,. i guess practially force them to. but how can you say screw you to the people who've just started to like them. everyone has to start at a certain place don't they? it's not like EVERYONE here has liked them way back since Dookie. let alone started to like them since 1039 or when they were Sweet Children. i highyl doubt that. but, the people who really like them now even if thei just barely new of them are still considered fans. they just didn't know about Green Day or weren't aware of how great they were until they heard AI. give them a chance. 3nodding
