2. Most interesting thing to me in this episode that has yet to be discussed is the fact that Rose's brain was apparently also compatible. Hmmmmmm? What does this mean? Is there some sort of connection between Rose and Mme. de Pompadour? Clearly Rose was trying to hint at this at the end of the episode but the Doctor was too love-struck to get it. I'm seriously curious at what this all means.

I feel that was simply an attempt by the writers to inject a bit of 'danger' into proceedings to keep the action-junkie percentage of the audience satisfied. Also to make the clockwork droids look scarier than they really were...we were told earlier in the episode they'd apparently finished all their repairs on the ship save for the brain, which was singularly unique to Mme De Pompadour by virtue of a very arbitrary reason. One that just flat out couldn't have applied to Rose. Especially because she's...what...19? And the one they needed *had* to be 37 years old.

Noooo, not true, Pirpi. BEFORE the Doctor even came in in his "drunken" state, the clockwork robot said "You are compatible" to Rose. Then after the Doctor's whole drunken ramble the robot said AGAIN "The brain is compatible" and I have no doubt in my mind that he was talking about Rose there. Did nobody else think that? I thought even the Doctor thought that's what the robot meant because he said "Compatible? You believe that, you could probably use a glass of wine!" which I took to imply that he thought Rose's brain couldn't possibly be compatible since hers is so much younger (and, just like he did in "School Reunion" when he asked Rose the math question, I believe the Doctor was also implying that Rose is rather daft which I find very insulting).

Anybody? Anybody?

hmm the 'you are compatible!' thing at rose before the braiange could have meant any part of her.. i mean they used hearts and eyes.. so why not someof rose... mayber her intestines! >D i dont think they were talking about brain compatibleness in regard to rose at all.

But they had all the other parts...they were just waiting for the brain...

Sorry, I'm standing by this one...I'm quite determined on it...hoping someone else at all thinks like me so that I'm not crazy all by myself... sweatdrop xd

I'm with you! I just think it's sloppy writing and a need to actually have the companions seen to be doing *something* in the episode that prompted it all o.o

I thought they where talking about spare parts being conpatable.

I don't like to shatter the hopes of Rose's brain actually being useful but I'm pretty sure that even she herself said "Why only her?" in reference to why the robots needed Madame de Pompadour's brain. The 'only' kinda suggests that just the one brain in that episode was compatible. I agree with whoever it was that mentioned sloppy writing (or rather 'confusing' writing as I liked this episode so I don't want to call it sloppy).

However, I think there is always the possibility that I am wrong. There could be two reasons why Rose's brain might be compatible. 1) Sometime in the future she changes her name to Madame de Pompadour or 2) Both her and Madame de Pompadour spent most of their time thinking about the Doctor. If the robots scanned both brains they would see this and might assume they were the same (sort of) brain. Well, they were pretty stupid robots.

I just watched this episode, fully expecting it to suck, but I ended up really liking how different it was from your standard Dr. Who story.

About the whole Rose compatibility issue, having reviewed the segment in question, I think the intention was that when the clockwork automaton said "The brain is compatible", he was refering to Pompy rather than Rose, since the Doctor had just called it "thick" for thinking that Pompy's brain would make a suitable replacement for a master computer. The fact that the automaton is shown standing menacingly next to Rose during the scene would certainly make the statement seem like it could be refering to Rose's brain, but I don't believe that was the intent of the script.

As for Rose's compatibility, I'm in agreement with others that it probably meant for her to be used for other spare parts (which would probably need occasional replacement, since the organs were slowly being cooked through usage... hence the barbecue smell). Why Rose and not Mickey? Considering that in the TARDISODE it showed a woman being attacked, it may be that the automatons only consider females to be suitable for parts, though no definitive explanation is given.

I think the the writers wanted to show the Doctor's human-like side, and show that he had emotions, and was affected by the Time Wars, something that they keep hinting at in almost every episode, so it's obviously leading up to something.

I also liked the horse!

I have to say, the Tardisode was scarier than the actual episode, mostly because you couldn't see what was standing over her. (Although that bit when the clockwork man comes out from under the bed, that was scary. I freaked)

A thought on the lonely part, and the half-human debate.

Time Lords despite there superiority is very xenophobic from generations of not having contact with other races much. So breeding with a human would certainly be a very taboo thing to do. But even in the books it is possible for a Gallifreyan male to impregnate a human female.

Well being half human to me would explain why he had a lonely childhood (in GitF) and never fitting in. If he was half-human by whatever means it would tend to make him get teased, shunned, and taunted as a child and in life in general cause none of his people would completely accept him as one of them, and yet he's too advanced and alien to be able to fit in with humans. That would make life very lonely.

Because ships and machines are reffared to being female?

They technically aren't, they are referred to as "she" but this does not make them referred to as female.

I'm pretty sure 'she' counts as female - unless they're actually trying to say 'shhhhip' but never got to the end of the word. There is no meaning for 'she' except in reference to females.

ninja I'm only saying this cos I think the idea of them only going after females cos ships are spoken of as female is a pretty cool idea and fits with the other bizarre reasons the robots came up with for doing what they do.
