Sabin raised a hand to the finally diminishing shiner with a pained expression. "Well... yeah, I suppose you could say that." He murmured quietly before shaking his head in incredulity.

"But... How can you not be excited? I mean, even if it is... different, it should still be servicable! We've helped you regrow an entire limb. And not just a thumbless animal limb.. Certainly it may be... scaled, and thicker... but it's got a thumb..." His eyes lingered on the red monstrous arm that grew disproportionately from his body, the tiny wings with a giddgy glow to his eyes, and the long lashing tail.

"Zachary... I know that you are unhappy. I am not a complete imbecile, I assure you. But given the options here on the island... I mean... what could be better than to not only gain something in the transformation back that you had lost, but become such a magnificient creature?" There was a hint of sadness and disappointment in his eyes.

Nervousness found its way into his expression, and he gave Sabin a grimace of fear. "Excited? About all of this? It's just..." He made a noise of exasperation. Nothing he could think of really made a lot of sense. He knew himself well enough. Noble causes were not something he engaged in regularly, and to claim so was a blatant lie. As much as the idea of getting his humanity back was quite appealing, it wasn't something he had the guts, balls, or other spare organs to fight for, himself. "I don't know. I don't like any of this. That's probably it. Everyone likes their freedoms, and I happened to be fond of my freedom to be human... I'm not going to thank you for... for this, though, if that's what you were hoping." He waved his right hand at the left arm.

"Hrm," he grunted grudgingly. "Considering how we don't seem to have a choice in the matter, I suppose it's better than whatever you did to Cassidy." Speaking of which, he hadn't seen the snake-woman for a while. Had she changed again? He continued to regard Sabin with some uncertainty, holding up his left hand and flexing the clawed fingers. It still felt somewhat odd, like the tail, a limb that would take some getting used to before his nerves could feel comfortable with it. Some faint pain still ran through the whole of it, though not as pronounced as when he'd first woken up to find it attached to his shoulder. When he looked away from the shiny red scales, he saw the expression on Sabin's face, unusual for a man who always seemed to be grinning about things. Deja vu.

"Well, like it or not, you, and I are both stuck here. If Moreau is particularly vengeful and makes sweeping assumptions, I may even end up in the very same situation. And 'humanity'" Sabin made a snorting noise with a wave of his hand. "The definition thereof is very lax. Do you mean your appearance? Humans range widely. Hell, on this island no one will discriminate against you without being a hypocrite themselves. I still view it as an opportunity." He shrugged with a small frown.

"And what I did to Cassidy? I helped Cassidy. It was Moreau who slated her for the serpent serum. I overheard her speaking with someone, saying she wished she could have been a bird, if she could have picked. It was too late to start her over when they've already begun on their serums. That... that doesn't work." He made an expression. "You wouldn't want to see the rats."

"But! But, I tried to help. Honestly. And admittedly I think it worked out pretty well. Quetzalcoatl is a fascinating deitical figure, and one that lent itself well to her condition."

He crossed his arms loosely, trying to regain a bit of composure. "At least disliking it gives me some purpose here... I'm surprised - you don't sound that eager to become an animal, yourself."

Promtply he was foiled by his idealism. He was dumbstruck for a moment, trying to explain a philosophical concept he'd hardly investigated. "Well, humanity like... being... human. Exclusively homo sapiens in body and mind. Look, I didn't go around almost killing other people before I started turning into this dragon... thing!" His ear-fins seemed to flare a bit as he spoke. There was little he could say to Sabin's second point, though, and fell silent with a somewhat defeated look. Being a social outcast was hardly a new experience for Zach, but it was true, he wasn't looked at like a freak here, among other freaks of the same caliber. Admittedly, Zach was guilty of some discrimination himself. The first three weeks on the island, as his own time ticked away, had been an experience.

"Well, you must feel like a good samaritan then." Considering how tedious missing an arm was, losing both legs seemed terrible. The whole operation was evil. Evil! There was no middle ground, was there? Fear crossed his face at Sabin's regard for the lab rats. They'd tested all of this and they still wanted to use it on humans... A horrible hollow feeling clawed at his insides. "There's no way to undo these... changes... I take it."

"Purpose?" Sabin asked skeptically. "If you wish to devote your life to hating your existence and predicament then that is not much of a life." Sabin had given up on his trip to the cafeteria and settled onto the nearby bench, resting his hands on his knees. "You claim ancestry to the legendary King Arthur himself, but if that is the case then apparently little of him has shown through to his descendent." Sabin chided, the disappointment still clinging to his voice. "As far as myself... well..." Sabin's eyes flicked to his long, pointed nails with a cryptic smile. "I shall say no more on the subject. Suffice to say that Moreau is rather possessive of when his serums may be used and for what purposes. But were I given a choice... perhaps I would were I allowed to choose the serum."

"And from what I have seen, your violence tends to peak only after the change. Perhaps... perhaps the serum is not as flawless as the tests would have suggested. And yes, of course we test them on animals. We do not use serums that have such negative side-effects that we have discovered, or refine the process until we deem them safe. Would you rather we use humans as the first level of test subjects? I think not."

He crossed his arms at the snide comment about being a samaritan. "Well, despite my less than steller reputation among the staff and subjects, I consider my 'choices' of serums to be generous at worst compared to many of the other staff members. I find no enjoyment at seeing someone become something abyssmal or their form to be a punishment. These transformations are fascinating, and all the better if they become something truly .... sublime... magic through the devices of science. Ironic, yes, but I will take what I can get."

Zach frowned at Sabin as he sat down. "What am I supposed to do, just sit back and pretend the positive outweighs the negative? Sure, I got my arm back. Wonderful. But apparently it came with the DNA of six or seven animals." His voice quickened, going from resentment to paranoia pretty quickly. He'd temporarily lost his fear of the cameras when he'd started doubting their existence. "You... how did you know about that? I've only told one person on this whole island!"

"Then we have a solution to that problem," he mumbled. Flustered, his wings gave a pathetic and painful flap. "I-what? No! Keep testing on your rats. I wish you'd stopped there."

He almost said nothing in response to Sabin's last statement. Was he supposed to believe the doctor? Admittedly, he hadn't realized that different doctors worked on different serums; he assumed it had been a collaborative effort falsey in the name of science. His expression darkened. "So, that Aubrey was right."

PostPosted: Thu May 18, 2006 6:05 pm

"What does it matter the source of the DNA?" Sabin asked honestly. "Would it have been better had I not told you the list? Would you be the wiser as to the influences of your appearance? Or if perhaps I told you that I had requisitioned a sample of a genuine dragon?" He shook his head, confused. "At least in your case while there was influence from several animals it is being directed towards a coherent goal."

"And I know because it is my business to know. We moniter the safety and the progress of all of the subjects." He shook his head, wondering about the concern with a chew on his lip.

Sabin looked over him, his disappointment coloring to resentment. "Look here." He said, rising to his feet again, though the imposing stance was lessened with the .... special clothing. "Look. You are here. Like it or not. And in MY opinion, blending of animals or not, you are fortunate compared to many. I am certain that many of the inhabitants would rather switch with you. There are people who have been slated to become fish, plants, rodents. And here you are, whining about your lot in becoming a dragon." Sabin gesticulated bitterly.

"Well... of course it matters!" He sounded unconvincing, even to himself. "I mean, there's a difference between predator and prey. Prey don't go off trying to kill things, for one... other things kill them." He gave a sweeping glance of the area. Damn cameras.

Being intimidated enough, Zach looked a little to the left of Sabin instead of at him, his tail curled around his feet. It was hard not to stare at someone dressed in hot pink. "Fine. I'm... I'm luckier than they are. But how does that-"

His words were cut off as something caught his interest. Zach turned his head a little, glancing completely away from Sabin momentarily. There was a heavy sense of foreboding. He could hear the droning, faraway sound of a car engine from far off. It was something quite familiar in the city, but alien against the lively sounds of the jungle.

Sabin's hands found their way to his tightly-clad hips as the frown burrowed its way deeper into his face. "Yes, well, above all you have the mind of a man to supposedly control urges that might pass your fancy. We can see what we can do about post-transformational .... issues.... but beyond that urges to flee, urges to attack... many of the other islanders - even predators - seem to be able to tame those or at least find a happy compromise so that they are not a danger to their peers. Those who have issues... well... seem to be amplified by the process. But we are doing our damndest to try to amend the... snags..."

Sabin trailed off as well, the confusion written across his features mirrored Zachary's at the encroaching sound of not one, but several jeeps. "What in the world...?"

Before the Jeeps even came into a clear view, Zach dropped to the ground like a fly - in the typical post-buzzing fashion. Six jeeps and a transport truck slid into the village, each loaded with at least two guards, their weapons at ready. Markerson, the head guard, led the way. "Put your hands on your head, Dr. Duvert," he warned, jumping off and heading towards Sabin with his raised gun the moment the Jeep stopped moving.

In a liquid motion, a series of guards surround Zachary, using industrial strength rope and shackes - typing him down completely to where, even if conscious, he couldn't expect to move his legs or arms...even his wings.

Markerson appraoched Sabin and jerked his hands behind his back, cuffing him as well. "The good Doctor would like to speak with you two."

Sabin visably paled as the troupe of jeeps arrived and confronted the pair of them. This was exactly what he didn't want to happen. His face fell immediately along with Zachary, and if you didn't think you knew the 'crazy whitehaired doctor' better, you might think you see a twinge of honest sadness as the guards begin to tie up Zachary.

"Now now... wait just a moment. Is that really necessary? He's unconscious for God's sake-"

HE was cut off as the guard roughly grabbed HIS arms to cuff him. "And... wait-what? What did I do?! Why am I being treated like this? Markerson - I am your superiour!"

Sabin glanced around edgily as he could virtually feel the eyes on him from many of the duplexes.

"I don't answer to know one dressed as fruity as you. You and your boyfriend here and in a world of trouble, I'd gather. And if you haven't been, I really think you better start praying Dr. Lockheart is feelin better really quick and is a very forgiving lady."

Markerson started to push him to the car as a group of guards started to try and heft Zach into the truck. A few other guards kept their guns drawn, crowd controlling.

Alec had been wandering about his duplexes all day, for the most part finding nice spots to sit and listen to music in solitairy content. Though his eyes were closed, a noisy disturbance caught his attention. Grey eyes opened to see the source of the loud buzz that now was successfully drowning out the CD player he was hooked up to, immediately catching him off guard.

"Wha?" He murmured as he slowly got to his feet, watching the line of jeeps quickly descend on a spot just a few meters from where he stood. Not one to miss out on a spectacle, the punk teen quickly dashed over though froze automatically at the sight of the many armed guards. He stood dumbly, watching a red, scaley subject being loaded into a jeep and another oddly dressed man still being apprehended. He slowly opened his mouth naively to ask what exactly was going on but didn't want to attract attention.

Sabin's expression turned serious and cold. "So because I have the balls to wear what's given to me as opposed to having to wear fatigues to secure my masculinity in my garments alone, that makes me a fruit?" Sabin snorted and leveled a more baleful glare at the man shackling him.

"This is NOT my fault." Sabin said between gritted teeth, but he knew better than to resist the men with loaded weapons, so he began to dutifully walk towards the jeeps.
