Though she'd been staring off dreamily into the distance for a few minutes, Kirien turned her head sharply at the sound of that sibilant voice. Whoever was behind that mask was not the average citizen out for a drink. She shook her head as the memories surged up - dead friends, a ruined city that should have been her home, the sound of metal on metal and a dark face at the end of her sword...

Don't get involved, she told herself. You're not a fighter any more.

But she couldn't just sit there. She looked back and forth from the thief to the masked woman and said evenly, "Don't make trouble in here. This is not a night for quarrels."

If she wanted parlor tricks, then parlor tricks she would get. The whitened sockets of his mask seemed to glow with a greater intensity and his muscles bulged across his body. He grew upwards; one--two--now three feet taller. The white of his mask gained a crimson covering and his voice deepened to a low, rumbling boom. It wouldn't last long, but it would last long enough for him to escape unscathed. "Show me your tricks then. What have the likes of you to offer? I fear you no more than a wolf would fear a cat." He watched the hand reaching for his neck, but it wasn't his neck anymore, it was a mere illusion.

Without another moments hesitation he slipped off behind his illusion and into the crowd. The dagger had been left behind, but it wasn't worth the troubles it was causing. He would only have a few more seconds before the illusion faded away and he was totally drained for the night, but that was enough to escape from the tavern without some crazy b***h of a woman tearing him apart, limb from limb. He exited the tavern the way he had entered, through the back door and into the darkened alleyway.

Somehow, through the red haze, Aria heard a woman's voice. She turned her head towards the voice. It was the woman in the green mask she had noticed earlier. She stared at the woman, an elf. For a moment the red haze intensified, the rage growing. Somewhere, in the back of her mind a small voice cried out. The part of her that was still sane, that was still Aria, fought against the rage. She gripped her dagger even tighter, all her being focused on the pain as it sliced deeper into her hand. She closed her eyes, struggling for control. No, she thought, I won't let this happen. I won't.....let....you...hurt...anyone. No. No.......

"NO!" She cried aloud. She opened her eyes, the red haze gone. She look around in bewilderment and saw people staring at her. She felt a sharp pain in her hand. She lifted it to her face and watched as the blood pooled and ran from a deep gash. Dear gods, she thought, what happened? What did I do?

Nausea swept over her and she leaned against the bar for support. The sounds and smells of the tavern suddenly overwhelmed her. There was a chaos of sight, sound and smell. She had to get out of there. "I'm sorry...I didn't...I don't....I'm sorry." She stumbled away from the bar, heading for the door. She took several steps before the nausea and dizziness overcame her. She felt herself falling as darkness rushed into her sight. So much for blending in, Aria thought to herself. Then her head hit the floor and all thought was swept away in darkness.

Kirien watched the other woman stumble away and felt rather perplexed. She'd been quite prepared to fight for her life armed with nothing but a glass of wine and a tin spoon, but then suddenly the red glow had faded from behind the mask's eyeholes, and the woman - the drow - had said something that, oddly, sounded like "I'm sorry".

Very curious indeed.

The common-sense desire not to get involved and the impulse to find out what this was all about warred in her head for a few seconds. Then she saw the strange drow sway and fall, and that did it. She jumped off her stool and pushed through the gathering crowd.

It looked like her hand was bleeding - that must have been the dagger. Kirien knelt and pulled off the black glove, exposing the skin underneath. Dark, as she'd expected, and sporting a nasty gash. With a silent tear for her second-best festival outfit, Kirien pulled off her bright green scarf and began binding it around the wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

Pressure. A dull, throbbing pain. A murmur of voices. Aria slowly came back to herself. What happened? Why is everything so dark, she wondered. The answer came to her as she realized her eyes were closed. Had she fallen asleep? And why did her hand hurt?

Aria groaned and slowly opened her eyes. Squinting against the sudden light, she turned her head and saw an elf kneeling at her side, wrapping a green scarf around her hand.

Her hand.

Memory came flooding back. Oh, gods, it had happened again. It had never happened twice in one night like that and never that intense. She just prayed that her blood on the elf's scarf was the only blood spilt. She tried to sit up, but promptly lay back down as nausea and dizziness swept over her again. She covered her eyes with her uninjured arm and moaned. "Gods, I feel sick"

Eventually the nausea passed and Aria turned her head to look at the elf who was binding her hand. Suddenly, Aria found herself holding back tears at the unexpected kindness. "Thank you." Aria said, indicating her injured hand.

Pushing back her green mask with one hand so as to see better in the dim indoors light, Kirien tied off the (now sadly stained) scarf with a neat knot. She sat back on her heels, and raised a skeptical eyebrow.

"Don't mention it," she said. "But, you wouldn't care to explain what that little... episode was all about, would you?"

She had to admit, though this person had looked ready to stab her a minute ago she didn't seem to be behaving like a threat now. Despite that she was still obviously drow (if an odd sort of drow) and therefore not to be trusted on first acquaintance much farther than Kirien could throw her. The best policy for now was not to assume anything.

"if you're still out to kill me, by the way, I'll expect my scarf back before you start," she added, with a faint quirk of a smile.

Sa'avant leaned heavily against the wooden structure he had just left. His heart beat quickly and his mind lay dormant. He was exhausted beyond words, but nobody had seen him leave and, if he were lucky, nobody would start up a search. He only needed to get away from the tavern, just a block down the road, that was all.

One step towards the road proved too much and he fainted, falling face first into the muck of the cities dark alleys. Tonight was not his night.

Aria blushed beneath her mask, and then burst out laughing at the elf's remark. "No, my friend. I think I'm over the urge to kill anyone." Aria gingerly sat up and looked around. There didn't seem to be as much fuss about her as she had feared. While the odd patron still glanced curiously her way, most of the revelers quickly went back to their celebrating.

Aria took a breath to steady herself and looked back to the elf, who was waiting expectantly for her reply. An explanation? What could....should, she tell the woman. The frightened, wary part of her wanted to give the woman one of her many, well practiced lies and then put as much distance between them as possible. The other part of her, the lonely, weary part of her, wanted to confide in this stranger. In the five years she'd been wandering, she had never found anyone she felt she could confide in. This woman was a stranger, and an elf. She surely held no love of the Drow. But she had taken the time to bind the wounds of a strange woman who was not only a Drow, but just seconds before had clearly been dangerous and half-mad.

In the end, Aria's loneliness won out. She gazed into the elf's eyes, saw no deception, and gave a short nod. "An explanation? Well, its a long story, but if you're willing to hear it....I think I'd like to share it with you."

Aria carefully stood up, pleased to see that the last of the dizziness seemed to have faded. She extended her uninjured hand to the elf in greeting. "I guess a good place to start would be my name. I'm Aria."

Kirien stood as well, and politely shook the proffered hand. "Then if fighting is off the agenda, I'd very much like to hear your story." She still intended to keep an eye on Aria, as it was obvious she wasn't always as reasonable as she was acting now; but never let it be said that she wasn't capable of being courteous. And she very much wanted to know what sort of story could be behind all this.

"My name's Kirien," she introduced herself. "I keep the bookshop in Willow Lane, if you happen to know where that is." She glanced around at the few people who were still giving them interested looks, and gave them a look which clearly said "what are you looking at?".

"Standing in the middle of a tavern floor might not be the ideal place for discussion," she added. "Perhaps some fresh air would be in order?"

Aria looked around the room, beginning to feel crowded. She definitely needed to get out of there. "Fresh air sounds really good right now." She noticed a few remaining patrons who were giving her curious looks. "Besides, I think I've had all the attention I want for one night."

The tavern had become even more crowded in the last few moments, and in the state Aria was in, making her way through the press of bodies was somewhat daunting. "Is there another way out of here? A quieter way?"

((Bleg. Not up to my usual standards, sorry. Writer's block. xp ))

"Yes, there's the back door." Kirien led the way towards the back of the tavern, away from the festival crowds around the front door. "It should be open; they usually leave it unlocked..." She stepped out into the alleyway behind the building, where the air was cooler and less stuffy.

"It's better out here, isn't it?" she said to Aria, but any further comment was cut off by the more interesting sight of somebody's feet, just visible in the darkness. Feet weren't exactly an unexpected sight, especially when attached - as these seemed to be - to someone lying face-down outside a tavern.

Kirien poked their owner with a toe. He was breathing, which was always a good sign. She shook her head. It was too early in the evening, really, for people to be getting drunk enough to fall over. Didn't this person know the meaning of moderation?

"Hello there," she said loudly, trying to shake him awake. "Wake up! You really don't want to be sleeping in alleys tonight!"
