Athran Anyone know where I can find Okean Elzy's song lyrics (in roman alphabet)? I only have the words to Ya do tebe, can't find anymore. I'm curious to the title meanings of my favorites : Ti sobi sama Koli tebe nema Ya do tebe Malo meni Mayje vesna Vishe neba Poyasni Kvitka Sosni And also the word 'azha' (if I spelt it right), I hear it so often in Mayje vesna. Oh, and 'yako' or 'yago' (can't make out if it's a g or k), in Koko Shanel. On something unrealated, I hear the most of Ukraine actually speak Russian and all of Ukraine can understand Russian, but not the other way around. But are things written in Ukrainian or Russian, or both? Things like stuff in shops, signs, mail, etc. It was an oversight when I came to NL, I didn't think about that, and though almost everyone speaks English, I can't read anything. I have letters with things to post back and don't know what they're about. romanization is a bad habit to start.....I would recommend learning the alphabet and I hate to romanized anything in that has a "y" sound with a "j" because native speakers won't understand the writing

Kokoroki romanization is a bad habit to start.....I would recommend learning the alphabet and I hate to romanized anything in that has a "y" sound with a "j" because native speakers won't understand the writing It's gonna take a long while to learn Ukrainian-cyrillic correctly, especially with learning some Russian too (the first step learning the Russian-cyrillic alphabet). I don't want to confuse myself by taking on too much. I suppose the two titles I'm most curious of is Koli tebe nema and Vishe neba. I'm not sure I want to learn all that much Ukrainian, Okean Elzy's songs capitvate me because I can't understand them and it makes them all the more beautiful. I wouldn't want that ruined like it did a French song I used to listen to.

I've been getting Okean Elzy's lyrics and romanising them myself, pretty much learnt to read UA-cyrillic like that. I'm slow though. Now looking up the odd words that have me curious.
Did the lyrics when I spent 3 weeks in France (with no net) as my b/f had a family crisis. I don't speak much FR (and can't say I'm all that interested), so I did the above instead and love the UA language even more now I can pronounce the words they sing.
Thinking of using cyrillic myself now as it's shorter, most lines were longer romanised. lol
Though I want to learn some UA. Do I want to understand Okean Elzy? A lot of FR songs were ruined for me once I was told what they meant. Sometimes, not understanding is nicer. Which is why I consider RU as the slavic language I will learn.
Do you know what 'Bищe' means? The online dictionary keeps giving me page can't be displayed on that word. Annoying as Bищe нeбa is probably my favorite song (along with Пoяcни and Мaйжe вecнa).
I even had a dream a few days ago of meeting Okean Elzy.
I've had so many dreams of going to UA over the last two months, perhaps five. It's a lot considering how many memorable dreams people have.
EDIT - Nevermind about Bищe нeбa. I just found out that it means 'higher than the sky', from the words of a native.

I'm not intersted in English music, unless there are very strong accents. I wish there were music like that.
I listen to some songs by an Ukrainian singing band with the original name - The Ukrainians. But they seem to have more of an old style of music. They're not half as great as Okean Elzy.
Do you listen to Okean?
God I want to know what Я дo тeбe means. I looked up дo in a dictionary, but I can't make sense of that song title. I think I'll have to ask my UA friend (though he prefers to speak RU and doesn't like UA, a pity but I guess he would speak some UA to me if I asked - when we start talking via a voice chat program - he certainly seems a nice guy).

Yeah, we need a translit.ua site like that Russian one. I've starting to listen to TNMK (Танок на майдані Конґо) a little now. They formed in Kharkiv. Since their name is written in UA, I think it safe to assume they sing in UA. I can't tell the difference between UA and RU by sound (I don't know enough of both), I can only tell by cyrillic writing. А за вiкном майже весна.....i моє життя heart Svyatoslav has a nice smile at 3:28 redface .

Stereoliza does have a russian accent in their songs......their songs are very funny to listen to.

I'd really so much LOVE to see Дніпропетровськ (Dnipropetrovsk), it's just 403 km from Kyiv. It looks so beautiful, however it is the Russian speaking area, not great to hear/speak Ukrainian in general life, but I'm sure anyone would speak UA if you asked them. Going alone scares me. But I don't think I could get anyone to come with me. I have this really farfetched hope that my penpal would help me (he lives there and got me interested in the place). Hey, that's really lazy of them to ask you to come over so they can attack you. If I ever go to Russia I'll be seeing my penpal in Moscow, so I think I'll be pretty safe. I don't think I dare go alone. However, when looking at the bigger picture, Moscow is probably no more dangerous than any other capital city. Depends in what area of the city you're in, they all have their 'rough side'. Since I like Russia too, it makes me mad about what Stalin did to Ukraine. So evil. And yet so much of the world doesn't know about the 'Holodomor' (Голодомор). One thing I wonder about Ukraine (and Russia) is what hand they wear wedding rings on. Since in the UK and France it's on the left, in NL and DE it's on the right. I wouldn't know which hand to wear my ring on - a silver one ring (LotR) - to show I'm not married in UA. It feels weird wearing it on the left (as I'm from the UK living in NL). I'd hate to give the wrong idea, especially since my RU penpal thinks I'm nice wink . One thing that makes me happy is that I read when people in Ukraine were asked what their native language was, 70% of people said Ukrainian, however it didn't necessarily mean that it was the language they used more often. And there's probably a lot of Surzhyk spoken (a blend of Russian vocab with Ukrainian grammar and pronunciation). Do you have any particular city/town to see in Ukraine? I've been watching some vids on Youtube of Ukrainian culture in a village called Bystiv, which is in the very west of Ukraine. The vids are posted Belozer. If you don't mind seeing things like people killing animals, but at least they eat them. It's okay as long as it's survival.
