[W]oman [W]arrior
Gaia Username: gothicangelfarore LJ Username: shadowsbecomeme Character AIM: gothichardass
Character Name: Paine Gender: Female Age: 18.
Appearance: Paine fits her name like a glove in the sense that she looks like she could deal pain—and lots of it. Tall at about 5’9” and highly toned to boot, some may wonder if she was really intended to be a boy. Even when one disregards her masculine build, she still looks quite fearsome. Her short hair is silver in color, and is pinned up in a punkish way, both for convenience and for intimidation. However, people often overlook this when they are confronted with her unnatural blood-red eyes and rather pale skin. She often tends to be the odd one out in a crowd, especially among the mostly Al Bhed Gullwings.
To add to her imposing stature, Paine prefers to dress in a gothic style not normally seen in Spira. Her “shirt” is a black and silver wrap top that looks more like a shawl, is pinned in the middle with a silver “X” pin, and conveniently hides the scar she bears when she was shot by Nooj. Two red belts cross her torso vertically, running under her top, and two black belts cross her exposed midriff horizontally, buckling above and below her navel. She wears short leather shorts that are held up with a black belt through its belt loops and a large red and silver belt that rests on the widest part of her hips. To finish the outfit off, she wears black leather boots that go to her mid-calf and leather leg warmers that stop an inch below her shorts and are held up with red belts.
Her outfits in other dresspheres also have this gothic aesthetic, though not quite as intense as her usual attire.
Personality: To be perfectly blunt, Paine is a total hardass. She never makes a joke, almost never smiles, hates wasting time, and can be extremely cold to even her closest friends. She rarely speaks to anyone unless it is of the utmost importance, and whenever someone tries to engage her in friendly conversation, she often blows him or her off with one or two word answers. On missions, her main objective is complete it satisfactorily; in battle, her goal is to finish off the opponent as fast as she can. Also, although she would never admit to it, she allows the past to affect her to some degree.
Of course, like all people, her personality isn’t so single-faceted. Spheres recorded when she was younger show a slightly more lighthearted Paine, who would laugh at friends’ jokes and make optimistic plans for the future. It remains to be seen whether or not this will reappear as time goes on.
Abilities/Weapons: Like many hardasses Auron, Leon, Cloud, Paine relies on a massive sword to take care of any enemies she comes across. Her blade of choice is as long and a bit thicker than a katana, with a large, gothic skull engraved at the base of the blade, near the hilt. She is able to charge her blade with basic elemental spells and use them to deliver powerful attacks that hit an enemy’s elemental weakness. She is also able to employ various dresspheres that give her a range of abilities such as mage, thief, gunner, and many others. However, her greatest strength will always be in physical attacks.
It can also be assumed that she is very talented with a sphere recorder, as she was a team recorder for the Crimson Squad when she was only sixteen. However, as guessed, she would never exude her talents.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Paine’s greatest strength is her stoic persona. She is able to keep herself emotionally distant from many hard situations, allowing her to not get ultra-affected like her fellow Gullwings. As a result, she can keep her cool in a pressure situation. It is next to impossible to ruffle her in any way, shape, or form, which also adds to her hardass image.
In a way, this is also part of her weakness. Paine has a serious problem with relating to people. She may not outwardly regard it as an issue, but the fact is she seriously lacks close friends and loved ones. Obviously, this can cause problems when she deals with issues that seriously affect her.
History: Although she does not speak much of her life, some very obvious facts can be gleaned about Paine’s history. She is from Spira, meaning she most likely followed the Yevon faith for a time, and she also most likely lost family members to Sin. Given that she doesn’t speak about her family, and appeared to be on her own at sixteen and possibly earlier, it can be assumed her parents are either dead, or there was a serious falling out between them. At some point she became very proficient at fighting with a sword, as well as adopted her hard-core goth look. It can also be assumed that some sort of emotional trauma occurred in her past that lead to her extremely cold and distant personality.
What is definitively known about her is limited. When she was sixteen, she was chosen to be a sphere recorder for a group of the Crimson Squad. She was immediately assigned to a group containing Nooj, Gippal, and Baralai, the future leaders of the three most powerful factions in Spira post-Yevon. The group quickly became close friends, each seeing the other as a sibling, despite their very different backgrounds. Although their bond was strong, later events would prove to separate them for a time. During a mission in Mushroom Rock Road, where the Crimson Squad candidates were to investigate a mysterious cavern, the ghost of Shuyin caused havoc in everyone’s minds, causing all but Paine’s group to attack and kill themselves. When the quarter finally got out, they found themselves on the wrong end of a Yevon firing squad, preparing to execute them for the knowledge they gained from the cave. It was only due to their quick thinking that they got out alive, though they still weren’t out of danger. Shuyin’s essence had taken lodge in Nooj, causing him to shoot his friends after they made it to safety.
Paine was able to fully recover from her wounds and afterwards set out to find out what had really happened. She eventually joined the Gullwings, an Al Bhed spherehunting group, partly for the adventure and partly so she could ride on their airship. Throughout their exploits, she made two new, very good friends, cousins named Yuna and Rikku, found out exactly what had happened to her two years before, and made up with her old friends. She defeated the ghost of Shuyin and therefore prevented a near certain apocalypse. When the Heartless invaded Spira, the trio known as YRP made it off the world and found themselves in Radiant Garden, where the imbalance of magic caused by the return of Maleficent and the instability of the worlds caused them to become fairies. By complete accident, they found themselves working for Maleficent, but soon joined the right side. After that world’s crisis was solved, the trio was split up again, with Paine taking a short sabbatical before meeting up with friends again.
