Sepia concluded that the best place to be was the opposite of the hold, and so she made her way up to the crow's nest - it was kind of shaped like a boat, she figured, so worse comes to worse she tries to pry the nails loose and floats it until the next ship passes.

Flinging herself into the bucket-shaped perch, she lands in a crouch and leans back to sit resting against the side, conveniently out of view from (most of) the people on both ships.

It had been awkward, but Sahlana had successfully gotten her arms underneath Geilen's and begun dragging him across the floor towards the door. She was trying not to think about the splinters that someone (probably her) would have to pick out the man's backside later at the moment that the blue light flared.

Later, Sahlana would privately congratulate herself on not accidentally dropping Geilen in shock. Faster than her eyes could see, blue energy had surged over Locke and the remains of the ballista and encased them, separately, in two huge chunks of ice.

Well, the fire was virtually extinguished, at least. Only now there was the problem of having a crewmate in an icecube, and -

Oh, s**t. As the ice cubes began to overcome their inertia and slide with the ship's heaves, Sahlana wondered if the ship's hull could stand such a heavy internal beating.

Sao nodded sharply in response to Morgan's directive. It was a matter of effort to get belowdecks; when she arrived at the bottom of the damaged stairs, she saw the cause of the problem: the ship was feeling the counterweight effects from... big ice blocks?

s**t. And she hated big ice blocks.

"Let's get those things secured!" she yelled, looking for a rope, a cleat, some ballast. She spotted Sahlana and gestured wildly. "Drop him and grab a line - he can wait a few seconds!" Her wry good humor in the face of disaster had drained rapidly upon the realization that she would be working with ice. Why had she taken ice as a weakness? It only gave her two points, and everything used ice. Stupid.

She managed to find a coil of thick, oiled anchor line nearby. Heaving the leading loop over her shoulder, she twisted and screamed abovedecks: "I need any spare men down here right now!"

-------

The Nautica bucked in the water, throwing off Thrain Pillock's aim for a brief moment. He steadied himself against the railing, then swore - for the third time, he had gripped too tightly, crumbling the charcoaled wood in his grasp (and subsequently staining his hands and robe black).

Finally, he got a clear shot on the upslope of a wave. With a simple trace of his wand, an actinic flare lit the distance between his outstretched arm and the rigging of the Stonefish. It wasn't enough to start another fire, but his Thunder spell had severed the jib line. The enemy vessel might be escaping, but it would be at least twenty minutes before they would have any control over their direction. A petty final strike. He felt like an angry cockroach.

Captain Cairn approached. Thrain had little desire to be the bearer of the news of the Stonefish's certain escape.

Rushing down to the holds just behind Sao, the effort of maneuvering through the crowd of sailors and pirates alike was largely done for her by her companion. Morgan was not bothered by ice the way Sao was, but neither was she particularly strong compared to most of her contemporaries, a fact that she usually made up for by being quicker and more agile than most by far.

Agility was not going to help much in this situation, but Morgan put her shoulder directly on the far side of the nearest ice block anyway and pushed all of her weight against it. She was so focused on just keeping the ship from tipping into the brine that it took a while for Jewel's chattering in her ear to register.

There's a man trapped in this ice! the little ferret warned. Well, Morgan didn't exactly speak ferret, but that was the gist of Jewel's warning anyway. "C'mon lads put yer backs into it!" she hollered to the crewmen, a few pirate captives sprinkled into the mix, who had responded to Sao's urgent call.

With the help of the extra men, the block slowly slid its way across the weathered wood of the floor. Although the block was heavy, the lubrication of the slowly melting surface underneath helped to ease it over more smoothly. One down, but they weren't out of danger yet.

----------

Wilhelm Cairn frowned deeply at the sight of the floundering, yet steadily retreating ship before him. He knew the seas enough to know instantly that his prey had somehow eluded him this day. It didn't exactly make sense. There was evidence of a mutiny aboard when they had first approached. He had to give his begrudging respect to whomever had managed to gain control of such a situation so quickly. A fact that he would not let his crew become aware of, however. Absolute fear and respect must be maintained at all times, and he would allow no amount of leaniancy to undermine that.

"Ahem, Captain, sir?" the small man next to him rubbed his hands, nervously fidgiting.

"Report, Thrain," Cairn barked sharply.

The first mate licked his lips nervously. "Well sir, it seems that despite your magnificent leadership, the Stonefish will reach port before we can catch them." Captain Cairn did not reply immediately, so the little man used the moment to attempt to secure his own life. "I did manage to temporarily disable the ship, but it seems their crew reacted more rapidly than we had anticipated."

Internally, Cairn smiled at Thrain's stammering flattery. These were all facts he already knew, and he needed no reminder of Thrain's usefulness, perhaps the only thing that had spared the wiry mage's life this long. The rumors that would arise from this scuffle were unfortunate, but not insurmountable. In fact, word that the infamous Nautica was actually escapable would likely make many ships a bit more lax in their defenses. A fact which would profit Cairn greatly.

This was all internal, however, for externally he scowled even deeper, and turned to face the rest of his crew, all of whom were busily going about their duties, trying to keep as inconspicuous as possible. Cairn scanned the crew carefully, then turned to Thrain. "This will never happen again, or you will pay for the loss personally," he threatened menacingly. Saying nothing more to the sweating first mate, the captain strode resolutely to a man who was fastidiously battening down the main sail, drew his sword, and quickly ran the man through. He had been a bit of a trouble maker and too much of a drunkard for his own good lately anyway.

"The rest of you get back to work! NOW!!" Cairn didn't give his crew the relief of retreating to his cabin immediately, but instead went directly to the helm and took direct control of their course himself, keeping well within sight of the terrified pirates.

Locke......child......

A voice from somewhere beyond Locke's subconscious called out to him. He could not respond. He could not feel, or move. He could not even tell if he was alive. All he could do was listen; and wait./

Child, you have done well.

Locke thought to himself that the voice could be no farther from the truth. He had failed in his task. One, simple task - extinguish the flames - and he had failed. Passed out in the middle of it. Shiva knows what happened to everyone else.

You are correct, child. I do.

What? Locke's thoughts reeled. What was this voice?

You know who I am, Child of Abscero. It is my power that pulses through your land and the blood of all those who inhabit it. It is your people who continually honor me, and in return, I grant you all of my power and protection.

Great Shiva! Is this real?

It is, Locke. Be strong, my child. Believe in your abilities; you have the power to do much more. I cannot say anything else but this - you will awaken soon. Be faithful, and care for Bhadra. You owe her much.

Who?

But Locke's only answer was his own thoughts. For a second, Locke thought he heard a rhythmic beat from somewhere above, and felt it pulsating through his bones. But he left that to his imagination. It seemed to have been having a ball with him thus far; I mean, who would possibly believe that the great Shiva had spoken to him. Locke nearly felt blasphemous for thinking of it, much less believing it. The only thing to do now was wait.

Belowdecks, amidst the pushing and frantic shoving of the ice blocks, a small, white bird went unnoticed. She landed on a particular chunk of ice with determination. And without so much of a glance from anyone else in the room, she slowly began to pick away at the ice, piece by piece, chunk by chunk. She would not cease until she could feel her master once more.

Sahlana noticed Nida's directive, but she hardly thought about the order before putting it out of her mind. She felt she could be more useful dealing with the injured and getting them out of the way, particularly since she wasn't certain if anyone else on board could heal.

Carefully negotiating Geilen's limp body through the hold, she spied a soft pile of dirty cloths and rolled him onto it. He'd smell afterwards, but it was better than lying on the hard wood. Sahlana secured some nearby fishing poles and laid them down beside Geilen, then piled some of the cloths on top of them to provide a small cushion so he wouldn't roll with the tossing of the ship. She leaned in closely to make certain he was breathing before heading back to prepare disposal of the dead.

It was somewhat difficult - and disgusting - to grab hold of the bodies and bring them up onto deck while everyone else was dealing with the ice blocks. But it wasn't impossible. By the time she had finished, the ice blocks had been secured, though Sahlana thought that the one containing Locke appeared noticeably diminished in size.

After the rough work of getting the ice tied down, Sao finally had the attention to spare to notice Locke's condition. Her first inclination was to order the group to help him out while she quietly snuck away; her hands were already chapped and numb, and between the ice blocks themselves and the rough ropes, she estimated she'd lost at least four HP.

... But hadn't there been enough tragedy for one day? It would make her feel better of she knew she had done all she could. So she picked up a belaying pin and set about helping the men (and bird) free the poor fellow. It would only be a matter of another minute or two, what with the ice cracking into chunks under their labor.

From abovedecks, the voice of the sailor at conn - after all the hubbub, it's uncertain exactly who's manning what station now - gave a strong call. "Nautica falling avast! We're a-clear!"

Morgan had also begun to help chip away at the ice surrounding the strange young man. Even Jewel started scratching at the ice, his sharp claws making deep impressions almost immediately. While they were working, the gruff young woman looked over to Sao. "So sin' tha cap'n and first mate have sunk ta the bottom o' Davy Jones, how do ya 'spect we should git tha mates, pirates, an' captives all sorted-out-like?"

"We're alive, an' that'll do for now, methinks," Sao grunted. "I expect we'd best let things set for the moment - you an' I an' the other Stonefish men keep the situation in hand." A large sheet of ice slid off and crashed to the planks; the young man's dorsal region and most of his left side were free, and careful work around his head and neck were showing considerable progress.

"A divvyin' at port, reckon?" called one of the remaining Stonefishers from the other side of the dudesicle.

Sao glared in her direction. "Aye, an' it'd be wise tae reinvest that share into the ship, an' maintain yer good status among her crew," she snapped. "Ye'll not look a sweet hire for any other captain comin' right off a bad job as this. Have another sail under yer hat before you go huntin' new prospects."

She blew a frustrated sigh. Turning back to Morgan, she continued, "I'd suggest a nice democratic election once we're ashore, but we'll be needin'a spend some time offships to get resources and whatnot, aye? It can wait until we're ready tae sail again. My 'pinion, acourse."

Locke remained in his dazed state, simply existing. The rhythmic beat seemed to continue on. He was sure it was not just his imagination when it became suddenly louder, almost a light tapping. Almost as though someone was trying to reach him.

I'm right here...

The tapping grew louder. It soon became a knock, and finally a very loud banging. Locke tried to put his hands over his ears to shield the blows, but he could not move. He tried to open his eyes, but all he felt was cold - ice.

What is this? What is happening to me?

He could swear that the banging was coming from three seperate places. After a bit, he could start to feel warmth on his left side. He tried to move his hand to stop the noise, but nothing happened.

Just make it stop! I can't take this!

What Locke didn't realize is that he could not feel his hand moving; it was numb from the ice. His three companions chipping away at the ice could easily have noticed a flutter of fingers on his left hand.

Morgan grunted her agreement, "Aye, wha' ye be sayin' tis tha right thing ta do." She fell silent, turning her attention to the task at hand, when she noticed a small motion in the corner of her eye. "Ah do believe this be workin," she exclaimed, indicating Locke's twitching fingers. "Hurry now lads, he'll catch his death if he's in thar long."

Locke was taking in his surroundings bit by bit. Touch came back first. That, and a feeling of extreme cold. Yet, he wasn't frozen. Thank Shiva, he thought. His left side had begun to thaw, and he had regained movement of his hand; however, he could also feel the pain from the burns he obtained earlier. He hoped his wounds weren't too severe.

Dammit. I'd forgotten about that.

He winced in pain, and tried to concentrate on his surroundings. The pounding overhead began to register as pecking, while the other two noises were chipping. He assumed some of the crew was helping him out; he hoped they were friendly. Unfortunately, Locke could not see, as his eyes were closed. He'd have to wait until the ice was completely gone to find out who was out there and what had happened.

He hoped his burns weren't too grotesque for his saviors. He hoped more that they were treatable.

At least I'm alive...

*****

After what seemed like hours, enough ice had been broken/melted away for Morgan and Sao to pull Locke away from it. They put him down on a spare sail they found lying about, and set about finding someone to heal his wounds and get him well again.

Suprisingly, the boy was not cold. He was rather warm, oddly enough. Locke was badly burned, however, and was unable to move a great deal. He had succeeded in communicating little more than a few moans of pain and nodding his head in thanks. That, at least, was better than nothing. Especially since he had been wholly frozen in a block of ice. The small avian companion rested by his head, cooing and rubbing up against him. He seemed peaceful, in a pitiful sort of way.

Locke blinked his eyes a few times, trying to make sense of what happened. He could just barely make out the two female forms who helped him out. Morgan was certainly one of them; he recognized her voice in an instant. The other he wasn't entirely sure about, but he was positive that they weren't going to harm him.

At last...some good luck. I hope.

By the time the others had pulled the unfortunate Locke from the large ice chunk, the other injured were sleeping soundly and most of the dead had been wrapped in preparation for a burial at sea.

Sahlana, who was kneeling on the deck and finishing up on the last body, heard a jubilant shout from below. The shout startled her; Sahlana hadn't realized how on edge she had been. She wiped her brow with the back of one forearm, making certain that nothing which had been in contact with the corpse went anywhere near her face, and stood up. The rest of the wrapping could wait, or someone else would pick up where she left off. It'd be more important for Locke to receive some healing spells.

Belowdecks, she washed down with half-melted icy slush, and then followed the relieved voices to where Morgan and Sao had pulled Locke out.

He was a sight, make no mistake, but it wasn't anything a few Cures and good shut-eye wouldn't fix. More good news! That meant they hadn't pulled him out alive only to have him die later. Locke was a good guy, and Sahlana liked him; his death would have weighed heavy on her heart.

She wordlessly rolled her sleeves up and began to prep for a Cure spell.
