Jeremy was quiet for a few seconds and then just sighed heavily. "Don't go. Myles'll be upset if you leave before he gets to say goodbye. I'm not chasing you out. I have a mandated appointment on Monday. I have to pass three sessions before they'll let me go back to work. I'm stressed out about it. I don't want somebody to tell me I'm not good enough anymore. I'm not ready to talk about it. I don't blame you. If it wasn't for you and Drew and Myles, I don't think I'd be here right now. So yeah, that weighs heavily on me. I'm not some rookie cop who just had his first brush with death," he reminded. "I hit my ten years already. But this isn't like all those other times. This isn't someone firing bullets at you, this isn't some guy with a knife."

He leaned back in the couch, sinking into the cushions.

"It wasn't an adrenaline rush, it wasn't five minutes and then it's over. Six days. I was in a coffin for six days. I don't know what I'm going to do if the precinct doesn't let me come back. That's my life. And I don't even know if I want to go back after that, if we're being honest. But I don't even have a plan until I talk to whoever in this mandated session. So don't ask me to talk to you about it, I haven't even talked to Myles. He doesn't need to know what that's like. You don't need to know. I like you how you are, doing what you do. I look like s**t because I'm not sleeping. Everything's waking me up at night. I'm not eating right, and drinking too much, I know that. It's not out of hand. I'm not going to let it. I'm not going to talk to someone until I talk to a professional. Which," he sighed and looked at the ceiling. "I don't even want to do. But I'm not going to put this s**t on you guys. I'll talk to you when I figure it out. When it's not a burden for someone else to bear too. Can you give me some time?"

"I'm sorry I pushed you." She honestly felt remorse for putting him on the spot like that. "Take what time you need."

Erica hesitated. A part of her felt like it would be wrong to stay, like she had just invited an elephant into his house and now it was difficult to breathe. She didn't know what words of comfort she could offer him because, in all honesty, she was as uncertain as he was.

Say he did pass and he was permitted to come back to work, everyone in that precinct had failed him. He would be well within his right to tell them to piss off or go ******** themselves and leave if he really wanted to. It would be a career ending move but she wouldn't blame him.

"What you did, you saved that person's life." Erica shifted the bag on her shoulder. " It's up to you to decide if all of this," she gestured around the room, at the empty bottles of beer in the recycle bin, "is worth it…" It wasn't something that she could help him decide, her voice in the matter wasn't even worth two cents. But there may be a day when he is asked to do it again.

"I'll be waiting for you when you come back." Whether it was to take a seat in a desk near hers or to put his badge on their chief's desk and resign, she would support his decision, whatever it may be.

Jeremy waved his hand dismissively. "Come on. You make it sound like I'm a lost cause. This is different than I've had to deal with before. I don't need you criticizing how I deal with things."

He wasn't getting s**t-faced, he wasn't breaking things, he wasn't hurting Myles.

He was processing, in his own way, trying to find something to settle his nerves. He could have just gone out, forced himself to pretend like everything was normal. He could have swept this under the rug like he did every other traumatic event.

But, this was different.

He knew it was different, in ways he didn't know how to explain to her. He blinked, and closed his eyes for too long and could suddenly only think of the hole he'd been in. Prying his eyes open felt like lifting an iron wall but he did it, and forced his gaze to settle on her again.

"Give me a little credit. I'm glad the kid's okay." There was no hesitation or doubt in that. "I wish things had gone differently for both of us. But I'm glad he was okay. I don't regret it. I just..."

He exhaled. "Need time. But. You're worried. I'll make time for you. I'll see you again soon, all right? ...We can go out to lunch or something. I owe you for dinner, anyway."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2020 8:43 pm

"It's not about owing each other anything, I brought the food because I felt like I needed an excuse, or a bribe, to see you two and make sure you're both ok." Erica's expression softened. "If you want me to stay, I'll stick around for a bit longer."

She set her bag back down before walking over to the fridge to grab a cold soda. "Why don't you find something on Amazon Prime or Netflix for us to watch?" At least that would fill the void of awkward silence of not knowing what to talk about.

Erica took a seat on the couch beside him, "Unless there's something else you want to discuss."

"Netflix and Amazon Prime?" he raised a brow. "You sound like you think we're well-off," he teased. They had both, of course; Netflix because there was a time when Amazon didn't stream very well, and Amazon Prime because Myles undoubtedly would need the oddest materials for his projects and this was just easier than him wandering into dark corners of Destiny City.

"Make yourself comfortable," he insisted. "...There's no rush for you to leave unless you want to. I don't know that I have much to say, unless you really did want to discuss those cases. But, I've missed having you around. You can fill me in on everything I've missed while we watch something dumb. Can't be anything too scary or too gorey or Myles gets nightmares. So." He seemed a little amused. "Hope you like comedy or other brain rotting fluff."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2020 8:43 pm

Erica laughed, “Speaking of Fluff… you should look up Gabriel Iglesias, or Fluffy, on Netflix. He’s a pretty wholesome comedian, I think he can make you laugh.”

“As for the cases, I’d like you to look over what I have first, see if you see something I don’t. The Captain would probably be pissed if he knew I was still looking into the disappearances since the call-ins were either canceled or the missing persons have all been found. It’s not my job to know why they vanished or what happened, all I need to know is that they’re back..” Her voice deepened in order to mimic his grouchy exasperated tone.

“The other two, however, are still active and open cases,” even if she didn’t feel inclined to help out Lil Ricky, he would undoubtedly owe her one if she could help retrieve his belongings, less the drugs of course.”

Jeremy grunted in response to her suggestion, partly because he was generally unfamiliar with her recommendation and partly because she was talking about work again. He handed her the remote so she could pick something and grabbed the folders, leaning back on the couch and now actually seeming intent to go through the documents.

"Yeah, well. 'Not your job' is subjective," he said, because apparently it was at least the precinct's thoughts that it wasn't worth investigating. He still wanted to know. Wanted to know all of this s**t in Destiny City, wanted it to have a simple, combatable explanation.

He wouldn't get so lucky, he knew.

But, he could hope.

"As long as they're back, that's a start. Glad Myles stayed in with me, though. Not sure what I would have done if he'd gone missing and I couldn't reach him. Even if it was just for a few hours."

He knew he needed to work on that, he knew it was paranoia.

He just preferred to think of it a justifiable worry, though.

"Not going to be good for us if we have to worry about people disappearing and maybe making it back every time fog rolls in. I understand you working on this but. I'm surprised they've got you working on these other cases. Thought the investigative unit would have been picking these up. Either they're testing you for a promotion or they're swamped, huh?" he asked, flipping through the pages and reading over everything.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2020 8:44 pm

Erica shrugged,” I haven’t heard anything about possible promotions.” She paused for a moment as she opened the Netflix search option and typed in the comedian’s name. When she found the video she hit start but turned the volume down so they could still hear each other.

“With you on mandatory leave and Franklin and Weis out sick, we are a bit short staffed. Going into the holidays there are more officers out on patrol, especially with Halloween and the drinking parties around the university campuses.” Without a doubt, even with what happened recently, Jeremy would be promoted before she would; that is, assuming he stayed with them.

He had tenure, and easily doubled her years at the Destiny precinct. Although it would be nice to some day make Lieutenant, Erica had been considering a career shift from Officer to Detective or Investigator and this was proving to be a good opportunity to get her feet wet. With that in mind, unless they were promoted together, she would probably turn down the offer.

Jeremy shrugged as he continued to go over the paper. "To be honest, I'm surprised they let you leave with these. Or, I guess. I should be."

How could he really be surprised about anything they were doing, anymore? Things felt strained, detached, with the job he cared so much about and the precinct he was suddenly at odds with. Aside from Drew and Erica, there had been a few officers who seemed genuinely glad he was okay--and the rest felt like they were trying to sweep him under the rug. Vaguely, he wondered if he could sue, but the thought was fleeting and nothing particularly serious. He wasn't going to get Myles dragged into anything.

"I get more patrolling," he said, turning the page and skimming still. "I'm just surprised that they actually want patrol cops investigating this stuff. Makes me suspicious."

But then, what didn't?

He lowered the files and looked at her. "Are you sure this isn't some sort of set up? They're not going to try and get you on some half-baked charge? Sticking your nose where it doesn't belong, taking files out out of sanctioned spaces, doing work above your paygrade?"

He had always been suspicious before. He had always told her to be careful.

...Now, more than ever, he had more reason to worry.

“It’s a distinct possibility…” Erica chewed on her lower lip in contemplation. It was a thought she had considered, albeit briefly, but went along with it anyway. In the three years she had been at the precinct she had never really done anything to make herself stand out; listened to the chain of command and regarded everyone with similar respect. Anything to reduce the risk of becoming a target or give the Captain a reason to look over her shoulder.

“Perhaps I should take those with me when I leave. If I am being set up for something, I don’t want to drag you through the mud with me.” he was probably the only one, outside of Drew, that wouldn’t think her theories were crazy. But what happened to Lil’ Ricky happened to another civilian at the Star Festival right before the person who assaulted them vanished through a mirror.

Jeremy gave her a somewhat disbelieving look; he brought his own troubles. He had butted heads with a few people just by nature of going by the books, by calling people out. There were a few people in the precinct that he trusted, but he had been suspicious of the rest of them for a while.

"'Drag me through the mud'," he huffed, like it was such a strange, foreign thought. "Good luck. You know I'd have your back. I just want you to be safe. You and I both know there's more at work out there than just what we're told. That the higher ups keep secrets from us is enough. Sort of makes me wonder if they aren't."

He was quiet and then shrugged.

"A part of this war, too. Trying to keep everyone in the dark."

He seemed reluctant to admit it, like it was some secret he'd kept burning in his heart for a while now.

“My guess is that they probably are, at least some of them anyway.” The ones that weren’t were probably just civilians like they were who got entangled in the mess unintentionally. One of those, now that you know either join us or we kill you sort of things.

“It makes me wonder how many of them are out there, the ones that can do magic like Myles,” Either they were great at evading the police, there was an amazing cover up going on, or there weren’t really that many of them out there.

“If I can ask, in the ten years you’ve been at the precinct, how many have you encountered?” Erica had gone three years without really running into any and then in the last two months there have been three, four if you count Drew but she didn’t know what he looked like in his other uniform.

Jeremy sighed and nodded at the idea of there being some literally corrupted leaders in the precinct. He still felt so new to this whole world despite having lived with it for so long now.

"I don't know. Some," he answered, but there wasn't much clarity in his answer. "Sometimes it's hard to tell who is wearing a costume and who is 'powered up'." A phrase he learned from Myles and had adopted for simplicity's sake.

"Unless I see someone doing magic in front of me, it's pretty hard to tell. But. I know I've run into a few. They aren't new, they're just good at hiding it. And, how many calls have you gotten for something that just seemed wrong? I've taken so many reports. People calling about fights--with weapons, with 'pyrotechnics', with absolutely no evidence. People appearing and disappearing. Monsters in the streets. You can only write off so many things before you start to wonder what's really going on, you know? But Myles says there's a chunk. He says he's met a lot. Says he doesn't associate with the bad ones, though."
PostPosted: Sun Nov 15, 2020 8:58 pm

“I went three years almost completely oblivious to this magic crap. But in this last four months I’ve ran into not one, but three with a fourth being Drew who I haven’t actually seen him in his other outfit yet.” To be honest, she wasn’t entirely sure if she wanted to.

Might be wise to at least be aware of what he looked like in case a day ever came where she took aim at him by mistake. However, on the other hand, wouldn’t that break the code of theirs. He had been so adamant that Myles should be cautious with his alternate identity that it seemed like this magic thing was taboo or something.

Perhaps when she saw him next, Erica would bring it up and get his opinion on it.

“One had one of these ghost like monstrosities floating by him. He fled the scene, left someone unconscious on the ground behind the dumpster. I thought I had him but then he jumped through a mirror. Not though like shatter it but like into it, it rippled like water and he was gone.” She blinked and shook her head, reimagining the moment all over again. “I honest to God thought I lost my mind.”

Jeremy nodded thoughtfully, but he seemed a bit distressed to hear about Drew. He turned his head away and shrugged, like it was easy to just reject the idea and not deal with it. He didn't like that it could have been there and he was so blind to it.

"Yeah," he drawled instead. "...I mean, I've seen more things that I thought looked like weird, wild animals. But I've seen more of those than people in weird costumes. Hard to tell when it's kids running around, you know? I can't keep up with fashion, anyway. All of it looks like a costume to me."

He shrugged, but just sighed.

"...I just can't believe that more people haven't noticed. I'm a good cop, all right? I've always done my best. Always. I'm not stupid though, I never reported it to a higher up. I didn't want them to blow me off, call me crazy, you know. I didn't want that reputation. I just. I don't know. People have cameras, why aren't there more videos of any of it? That's what I don't get." He exhaled. "...Or maybe something else is happening. Maybe more of them are showing up. Maybe something's about to go down."
