With a quick movement, Eostre shoved her shoulder into the door. The force of her body and its weight popped the lock, and the door opened at last. She really hated having to do that, but sometimes it happened this way, when her usual strength failed her.

At least it was open. "Stay behind me," she said. She'd enter first, make sure it wasn't psionic. Not that they had much choice if it was.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.
The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!

If this is your fourth mini-boss fight, you have reached one of the steering systems! Roll 1d4 in the spoiler below:

1 - The other teams appear to have been successful in their endeavors. There's enough power available for you to reengage the system. The entire room illuminates and roars with life. It's perhaps dangerous to hang around in here too long, but in the meantime the amount of energy in the air makes you feel powerful.
2 - The tendrils of the ship's wiring look like a crime scene, or perhaps a particularly gory nest. Headquarters gives you harried instructions to shut down and isolate the area before the whole ship goes up in flames.
3 - An undead helmsman is still tethered to the center console. They don't have the ability to provide power, but their presence is preventing the back-up systems from triggering. You remove the zombie and the system reengages successfully.
4 - The room is dark and cold, but with instructions from headquarters and the efforts of the teams on the other decks, the system has enough power to reboot itself. The ship begins to thrum with life. It makes your horns tingle and your hair stand on end.
Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

When she entered the room, the thing she was was horrific. Huge, bulky, some kind of old commander of the old queen, judging by the decorations on its torn uniform. But, some kind of fluid was leaking out of it, onto the floor. She slid in, and it hit her before she knew what was happening. As she reeled back, she only barely managed to hit it.

But it wouldn't get the best of her.

With determinism, Eostre sidled back to the hulking creature, and she attacked furiously. Her fists caught it in the jaw, and as she moved she kicked it. She had agility and size and calculated strength on her side. She'd trained for sweeps.

She grabbed its arm and tore it clean off with a swift move, punching it once more with her brass knuckles before retreating for her crew to attack.

Woah, this thing was monstrous. Leeroi was impressed. Aside from the zombie nature and the weird gushing, Leeroi kind of wished that he could look like that one day.

His thoughts were cut short as he was suddenly hoisted into the air by the daywalker. Feet dangling, Leeroi mumbled "Oh, s**t..." before scrambling for his shotgun. He fired at the commander, but his eyes widened when he watched scraps of metal pop right back out of its skin, skin unmarred.

Leeroi charged up his cannon arm, using it as a last ditch effort to break free from the commander's hold. His hand detached, dangling with his feet in the air. Leeroi smiled as the cannon charged to full blast, and aimed for the commander's head.

Just then, it turned. Leerois laser fired right past the daywalker's nose, creating a blast in the wall. Eyes wide in disbelief, Leeroi sputtered.

Whew - Psykgi couldn't remember when she'd last been run this ragged. The scanner could help them with those devilish doors, but it was a slog that was for sure. Had she just gotten lucky with her ships before?

Hmm.

She took a moment to catch her breath and brace herself before she walked in - only to see the shotgun shot remove itself. "It's regenerating?! How?!" They were walking corpses - how on Alternia could they do that? That was ******** up. Also it was oozing, and...

"Hey, LT, that ooze looks like it's coming your way!" Psykgi called out, noticing some of the rancid goop moving on its own and leaving a trail of freshly scoured floor in its wake.

Hemera looked up, up at the daywalker in shock. Two surprises so far on this ship, and perhaps it would continue that way. This undead veteran was absolutely gigantic, and so much blood kept pouring out. Or, was it blood? Some sort of pus? Hard to tell. Mera, as per usual, wanted to keep her distance. She had enough of her own blood as it was.

As she considered her plan of attack, she witnessed Leeroi and Eostre both get hit pretty hard. The daywalker itself appeared just about untarnished. Not the best for morale. As it swept through, she had to duck. Debris fell in the daywalker's wake. She had to ice up as a precaution.

Mera chose to keep her distance. Both from the daywalker, and potentially being in the way of one of Leeroi's misfires. She bit back a comment about his aim. Time and place.

Instead, she focused her efforts on tossing her boomerang, seeing if it might cut through the daywalker's only arm enough to make it drop Leeroi. Better to fall than to be thrown, anyway. And if he ended up being thrown at her or something, well, at least her ice could handle it.

The moment she got in range, Psykgi tried to attack the daywalker and distract it somehow. But its skin had to be reinforced or something, because her axe - her very nice military quality axe - refused to get purchase on the oozing pressure of the monster. A little bit of ooze, like sap, leaked out of the cut and dried.

She had to hit again.

She couldn't. Eostre tried to pull Leeroi out of the grasp of the commander, get a good attack in and all that. It was slippery, gushing, hard to hit. Her fists slid off uselessly, and she couldn't get the blueblood. Hopping back, she tried to think. What could she do?

Pulling out her trench knife, Eostre gripped it sideways in her hand, folded in with her brass knuckles. She attempted, getting close to the enemy again to slash it, but she missed. Eostre pivoted on her heels and faced the commander again. She attacked, but it seemed undeterred by her movement even if it couldn't catch her.

She had to help Furore though. Once more, she slashed at the arm holding Leeroi, hoping it would loosen its awkward grip on him. "Furore, can you get free?"

Leeroi was thrown, and thankfully just before the blueblood was going to resort to biting this thing's hand to free himself. Unthankfully, the creature threw him back, and he hit the ground with a loud thud. Woozy, Leeroi managed to stand, and he watched the commander with a frenzied stare.

He reloaded his gun, and fired, walking confidently back toward the daywalker. He fired again and again, knowing that if he relented, their team would get nowhere.

Leeroi readied his cannon arm again, not willing to embarrass himself again. He charged the cannon up to its full capacity, and braced his footing. "Eat this!" He yelled, shooting the blast into the daywalker's chest.

Taking a step back, Leeroi made a face as if he was admiring his work. The daywalker certainly wasn't finished off, but it was looking a lot worse for wear. Hopefully the rest of the team could take it down while he was still fixing his hand back.

With Leeroi free, and the daywalker distracted, she ran around them, throwing her boomerang and slicing at the undead commander's knees. The boomerang cut through, sending the daywalker crashing down. With it struggling to get back up, she caught her boomerang and went to dispatch it.

But, it still had an arm. With it, the daywalker swatted at her like a mosquito, slapping her away and off her feet. She fell to the floor, ice shattering. She wriggled away and looked over her shoulder. "Someone needs to dislodge its head while it's down!"

Psykgi stepped aside for a moment when she saw Leeroi take his shot. "Nice shot!" Psykgi said, raising her axe and going back in. Hemera had said to try to get the head off while it was down - that would probably help weaken it a lot. Psykgi tried to do exactly that - oh she tried. She went in to give the creature a whack with her axe, but the blade slid on the thickened, oozing skin. It had been a hard hit, too - she pulled back as it swiped at her, getting her good with its claws and its caustic 'blood.'

"Augh...!" she exclaimed, biting the curse back into a hiss. This battle really wasn't going the way she would have hoped.
