Academics on Lock

Static looked at the lock, really looking at it. First from about three feet away, then two, then one, then about an inch away. To be honest he had no clue what he was doing, but that was fine, right? It was all learning. The blueblood took out one of the little tool kits they had given each military troll. It had a few screwdrivers and some other things. Sadly, none of them really worked on the lock.

"I really don't think we should go in here." Amonee gulped. He could faintly hear the sound of some kind of mechanical workings on the other side of the door. Except it was coming from the ceiling instead of like... somewhere logical. Didn't that mean it was probably something bad? He looked over his poor battered team. Seeing them get hurt again was terrible.

"Are you sure you're okay?" He reached to take Newcleo by the arm, pulling him into a worried and semi sniffly embrace. He was worried about Nucleo too but the clone was much more naive and optimistic to the point of it being dangerous.

Not like Amonee could really talk.

"This is obviously an important room," Lorata challenged, stepping forward to stare at the door. This time she would definitely find the way to stop the trap. How hard could it even be? She reached up to very carefully fiddle with it, glancing down to see if Static had made any progress on the lock. He hadn't though. Not one bit. Scowling, she stopped. "Switch with me. I'll do it."

Using Strength on Lock, failed, -5 hp

Okay, so his feeling with the lock didnt exactly work.. that was okay! He could just force it open! I mean, he beat Scorpa at wrestling, how bad could a door be compared to her?!

Bad apparently, quite bad. Static pushed and pushed to no avail. It, well, it was a little bit depressing. He thought he could do it! Get it all and impress them all! Next time... next time.

There are lots of asteroids in our solar system. Most of them live in the main asteroid belt—a region usually between two planets. Asteroids hang out in other places, too. For example, some asteroids are found in the orbital path of planets. This means that the asteroid and the planet follow the same path around the sun.

Lorata shoves Static to switch places and tries the lock.

What was he doing!? Frustrated, Lorata shoved at Static to get at the locking mechanism herself. She was going to get this stupid door open one way or the other without her stupid crew getting themselves killed if it was the last. thing. she. did. The door remained locked despite her efforts however and finally she hissed out a curse and stepped aside with a motion for the blueblood to have at it.

"Wait, it's dangerous-" Amonee watched Static summon up all the strength he could and smash down the door. It beat him up badly and he could only chase after the other boy, determined to stop him and check on those wounds. Unfortunately, all plans for this were temporarily placed on hold as a painful mist filled the air and his lungs. Coughing, he clutched at his chest and tried to find somewhere safe to go.

"Watch- Out!" His chest heaved and he tried to warn the others but it was too late.

"Amonee, wait-" No matter which route they took, it was just more damage to bear. Lorata rushed in to push or pull the two of them out of the gas as much as possible, but doing so only managed to get herself as caught in it as they were. She choked on it, coughing and sputtering as it burned at her.

Nucleo is using his clones!
4d6 hits with +1 to accuracy to each on this attack, 1x per battle. First two numbers are the 'hit or miss' determiners, second two are the damage done.

"Uh oh." Nucleo gulped as he saw the mist begin to spray. Amonee and Lorata dashed on through and he supposed he'd better get going before more of it flooded the area. Grabbing his clone, Nucleo took a deep breath before covering his nose and mouth and racing through. It stung a bit but they both managed to slip by without too much getting in their lungs.

"Are you okay?" Newcleo asked the others as he made it to the other side, fretting.

Some of the condensing dust in the cloud became planets. The objects in the asteroid belt never had the chance to be incorporated into planets. They are leftovers from that time long ago when planets formed. Since asteroids formed at the same time as other objects in our solar system, these space rocks can give scientists lots of information about the history of planets and the sun. Scientists can learn about asteroids by studying meteorites: tiny bits of asteroids that have flown through our atmosphere and landed on Alternia's surface.

This is a mini-boss battle, the full rules and mechanics of which can be reviewed here.

The room beyond the door seems empty from the hallway, but stepping inside you are swiftly aware that you are not alone! For lurking in the corner is a dark groaning shape. As it turns towards you, you realize you are entering strife!

You have encountered a ...

Dice 1

1. ... Enraged... (-1 to all attacks)

2. ... Jawless... (+1 on accuracy rolls)

3. ... Putrid... (-1 on all accuracy rolls)

4. ... Decomposing ... (+1 on all attacks)

Dice 2

1. ... Skeletal... (-5 miniboss HP)

2. ... Bellicose... (players take 2x the amount of damage on their first turn)

3. ... Armoured... (only 2 players per turn may use a special artifact/ability/item)

4. ... Burning... (take an extra 1 dmg each time you deal max damage (highest roll possible for weapon or damage-dealing skill))

Dice 3

1. ...Undead Ship Cook!

2. ... Mutated Daywalker!

3. ... Zombie Gerbil Pack!

4. ... Daywalker on Fire!

MINIBOSS STARTING HP: 30/30

If you rolled a 1, take 4 dmg.

If you rolled a 2, take 4 dmg.

If you rolled a 3, take 3 dmg.

If you rolled a 4, take 3 dmg.

If you rolled a 5, take 2 dmg.

If you rolled a 6, take 2 dmg. Your attack this turn does double damage.

If all party members reach 0hp, look below:

You must make a tactical retreat! Scrambling back out of the room,

you barely make it to the pod with all your limbs attached.

Better luck next time! You have retreated from your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

If the mini-boss reaches 0hp, look below:

If this is your first or second mini-boss fight look below:

If a member of your team is a trained Discipline or Endurace specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can close your eyes and draw on inner reserves to keep going. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.

If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Restore 1d10+3 OR 1/3rd (rounded down) of your hp.

If you are a Novice in your skill: Restore 1d8+2 OR 1/4th (rounded down) of your hp.

If you are training your skill: Restore 1d6+1 hp.

You cannot roll the dice then choose the flat restoration, one must be picked beforehand.

If a member of your team is a trained Troll Relations or Leadership specialist OR registered as in-training for either:

You can manage to cheer, rally, or cajole your teammates into finding more energy. This can only be done once per ship exploration per troll trained.

If you are a Journeytroll or higher in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+3 (rolled separately) hp.

If you are a Novice in your skill: Each team member restores 1d6+2 (rolled separately) hp.

If you are training your skill: Each team member restores 1d4+1 (rolled separately) hp.

If this is your third mini-boss fight, you have reached the control room! Roll 1d4 and look in the spoiler below:

1 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the ship away.*

2 - Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. As the screens boot up however, dozens of red warnings and errors flash across the screen. It seems like there has been critical damage to the ship in multiple places. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.

3- The ship refuses to power on, even after you follow headquarters instructions to make sure they are plugged in, and hitting ctrl-alt-del. It looks like something core is not functioning. Your team is instructed to leave the small black boxes containing deadly explosives in key positions on your return path to the exit.

4- Powering on the ship is easy enough, with the instructions from headquarters in your ear. The screens show that the ship is functioning perfectly, and headquarters patches in the control of a remote helmsman. They wait until you have returned to your boarding pod and leave, before steering the boarding vessel away.*

If any troll in the party has helmsman authority, they can steer the ship to given coordinates, then return to the boarding vessel with the rest of the team.

Congratulations! You have completed your mission and returned back to the docking area! Squad commanders, be sure to report in!

"Watch out!" Nucleo shouted, ducking unsuccessfully as a mutated daywalker swung and knocked him right in the head. Stars filled his eyes as he fell down, only for a pair of feet to jump over him.

"No you DON'T!" Newcleo leaped and swung right at the daywalker's face. It wasn't enough to kill it but at least it veered off course away from the stunned Nucleo. He'd bought the time he wanted, rushing to his master's side.

"Nucleo, stay with me. Come on." The clone pleaded, cupping Nucleo's face.

All living things when pressed with the threat of dangers chose between fight or flight. Running from harm had always sheltered Amonee in the past. He had taken on silly squabbles before but always escaped from true actual injury. His friends would stand up to protect him after all, they always did. But Static... he was fighting. Fighting every obstacle in his way. Even if he failed, he kept going until he blew through whatever door was in his way.

Nucleo yelled, followed by chatter from the clone. A quick glance confirmed that he was badly disoriented and hurt.

No.

"Stay away from him!" Amo shouted, eyes full of anger, of fear, of hate. He hated the senseless violence. He hated himself for instinctively grabbing the monster by the throat and slamming it into the ground. He hated the way he raised his club and repeatedly beat it until parts of it broke. But most of all, he hated the idea of Nucleo dying, clone or original. And that trumped all.

Asteroids are left over from the formation of our solar system. Our solar system began about 4.6 billion years ago when a big cloud of gas and dust collapsed. When this happened, most of the material fell to the center of the cloud and formed the sun. Now it was time to punch with the power if all the suns, yeah!

Lorata was still struggling to catch her breath as the mutated daywalker descended upon them. Everything was so much better underwater, so much better without the risk of this. Wheezing, she tried to straighten and lift her partisan to defend herself, but another coughing fit took her guard right back down just as it lashed out at her. She hit the wall by the doorway with a crack and staggered.
