It might be too late to enter but here's a story- I felt like participating:
The door opened with a waft of deep-smelling air, air that had not seen the sun for far too long. Emalthya stepped through, into the dark carnival.
She was here to find someone, but as she looked around at all the fantastical people and the creatures, she considered that it would be easier said than done. She had been told her target was here, hiding from her, but he could do great damage to her and to others, so despite his intention to hide rather than to fight her, he was not someone Emalthya underestimated.
She tapped the hilt of her sword against the palm of her hand. She stood out for not being absurd enough in costume. She tried not to put her hand over the pocket where she kept the stone which would allow her to open a new door back home. Truly, the door was always there. Emalthya glanced back. She had come out of the door to some kind of mirror maze. If she went in through the door again, she would simply be in the mirror maze, but if she slid the stone into the doorframe before going through the door, she would end up where she had just left.
She was attracted to some bright lights and went into a tent, where a woman with a red chignon had a black snake around her shoulders while tossing balls of coloured smoke into the air. Emalthya approached the stage. The red-haired woman looked at her. So did the snake. This was too easy.
The woman threw a ball of green smoke into her face and ran while Emalthya recoiled, swatted her own face, and ran stumbling after. Her eyes were streaming from the smoke and she coughed hackingly. Her lungs had never been very good.
The woman in front of her ran through the strange crowd and in and out of tents, Emalthya hot on her trail. But the woman with red hair was too fast and began pulling away, and Emalthya caught up a bunch of hoops from a carnival game and began throwing them, aiming at the woman’s legs. They did little to stop her, but she looked back with a gloating smile and nearly collided with a green, scaly elephant. She swerved to avoid it with her head still facing Emalthya, as though she could see out of the back of her head.
As she ran by a fishing carnival game, Emalthya yanked away a fishing rod and aimed it at the woman in front of her, using the ground she had gained by the almost-crash. She flicked her wrist and the line hit the woman’s shoulder, but she shrugged it off. Emalthya pulled. The line snagged the woman’s black snake and it began to slide off her shoulders. Emalthya dived forward to catch it while the woman lurched forward, then darted back to pick it up.
Emalthya had the serpent in a grip behind its head. “That was silly,” she said, gasping. “Why would you toss that in my face?”
The snake’s jaws opened and closed like a trap. Emalthya relaxed her hold on it a fraction. “I didn’t expect you to find me so easily,” it said in a man’s voice. “What gave it away?”
“I suppose it was instinct.” Emalthya stood up and let the snake dangle in her grip, which you should not do with snakes, but this snake wasn’t actually a snake. “I followed the bright lights.”
“If I concede,” gulped the snake, ”will you stop throttling me?”
“Yes.”
“You win,” said the snake with a sulky, but admiring, attitude.
“Because?”
The snake huffed. “You win because you were better at hide and seek.”
Emalthya released it and it began to fall to the ground, but the instant its tail touched the ground, the snake’s body expanded and an annoyed-looking man with red hair stood next to Emalthya. He reached out for the woman with red hair, and as he touched her, she transformed into a staff, which he tucked under his arm.
“Clever making your staff the human,” said Emalthya.
The man dipped his head a little to acknowledge the compliment. He offered Emalthya his elbow and she took it. “I am sorry about the smoke,” he said seriously. “I forgot.”
“It’s okay. It was a fun Halloween game.” She picked up the fishing rod and they walked back to return it to its game. “Want to go home yet?”
“No, this place is fun! Let me try and win you a prize.”
