Vermina- Post 4

Vermina heard the call to stay back, her eyes shifting the tiniest bit to look over at those coming to the struggling sister's aid. Seconds counted. They were warriors; and.. she had not even chosen a weapon yet. "No!" she hollered, reaching out more toward her terrified sister's hands. She was a warrior, too! ..In training, but still! She couldn't just stand back when she was so near; when she could offer even a little help. Just stay out of the way of the weapons... that was all she had to do...

Well, now they were coming together weren't they. Too much. The young prentice was far too close to the action for comfort, and what if she was hit by weapons? He halted for the moment, sending an ice spell at the Dretch to see if that would do anything. He didn't have the training yet to make it more powerful, but it might stop it, or slow it down, or loosen its hold.

Votzhem was conflicted. Did he attempt to free the sister that was trapped, or did he hang back to protect the little sister who was putting herself in danger? The choice was difficult... but could he not do both?

He maneuvered, staying in range to grab the girl if necessary, but also to attack the monster when there was an opening...

Chapter 9: Grave Expectations

|| IC ||

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show. The sisters rushed forward, but didn't get too close. They remembered the rumors, the terrible stories of the magic these creatures used to terrorize them in the past. All of them remembered the stories of their childhood, and although they scoffed at such rumors, now they couldn't help but remember. And be apprehensive. Would these beasts steal their souls? Cast a spell to burn off their skin and kill off their tribe? What could they do to save their sister.

One sister raised her spear, waiting for a moment before sending it out like a flash. It flew threw the air, and slammed into the tree behind the creature. A tear sounded as the cloak fell of it's face, revealing a disgusting creature that hissed and spit at them.

That was the sign, and with determination the sisterhood rushed forward. The Alkidike trapped tried to fight, and it seemed for a second she was overcoming the creature. But then, as they finally approached, a flash and smoke was all that they saw before both were gone.

Yansa let out a cry of defeat, and Eshe released her hold on the mystic before turning away. The area was filled with a tense silence as everyone tried to process what just happened.

Votzhem didn't know if his mother had ever told him of the Dretch. Of the Menzuri, and the strange things that lurked in the deep understory, sure. Of the creatures of the sea, definitely. Of Aisha... of course.

But never of the Dretch, so perhaps he was too fearless. But when the rest of his sisters finally fell in, he backed off to stay with the young prentice. He was grateful for that moment of strategy when dark magic filled the air and made his skin crawl, and then they were gone - the Dretch and the woman. Gone, vanished into thin air, beneath the very boughs of Aisha herself.

Votzhem was too stunned to really think about what this could mean, but he had enough presence of mind to turn to the prentice girl. "Are you all right?" he asked, his voice rough and harsh.

Vermina- Post 5

Vermina's hand held out in the air, her whole body stiff with fear. The cloak had fallen away from the creature to reveal the foulest thing she had ever seen. She had heard the stories of the dretch, but had assumed them to be tall tales. What had been standing there, kidnapping their sister... no story could compare.

Gasping sharply, she looked over the the rough voice before falling to her knees. "No.." she murmured to the hybrid, arms hugging around herself. Her elder sisters had been afraid, and she had been afraid. Terrified. Such emotions were utterly painful.

She turned back toward the elders and mystics. "Where did it take her?" she asked shakily, slowly finding her voice again. "Matron! What happened?"

Danika - 5

Anger burned in Danika's gaze at the scene which had just unfolded. Her antenna were vibrating with high sensitivity to the area around her as she took a step away from Eshe, "I think it's fine for now." She murmured though her voice was shaky. Some may have seen it as fear, but it was frustration. Frustration that she hadn't been able to raise her blades against the creature in order to save her sister.

Oh, Aisha....what were they going to do now?

Rishima - Post 6

Rishima came to a stumbling halt as the Dretch that his sister had been charging at just... vanished. His antennae set to twitching for a moment before he continued forward again, going toward where Jerarda was. It was... a shock. The thing had appeared, grabbed someone, and vanished in a snap. It had been so fast that even Jerarda and all of her skill hadn't been able to catch up with it. It was a terrible shock that made his heart feel as though it was thudding painfully in his chest. Lifting a hand he grasped it against his now aching heart.

That was... terrible, to lose yet another sister like that, and what if it had been Jerarda? The idea that she might have been taken away was a terrifying thought because he knew that he wouldn't be able to face anyone had such a thing happened. As it stood he felt as though he'd failed the sister that had been taken because he'd gotten shaken by her words. He should have done more... and still should.

He'd have to speak with Jerarda as well as those in charge, to see if they could do anything about the Dretch. Surely they couldn't just stay here and do nothing, right?

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Oh...we are anything but fine." Eshe responded softly, her gaze looking back toward Aisha as she began to fade her focus from the conversation. The older mystic was unseeing and unmoving, and Yansa took control of the situation.

"Sisters!" She shouted out, her voice slightly wavering in the aftermath, "The Dretch are real!"

It seemed to only take a moment for that to process as some cried out in alarm, some in anger, and most began to whisper quickly to one another. Stories, rumors, fears, they all spread around. These beings were a nightmare to the sisterhood, a story and a warning passed down through generation.

"Scribes, we must examine the old scrolls of ages past and understand the truth from the tales. We must prepare our resources to fight against dark magic, to protect ourselves from this threat, and to understand what they are looking for. We hear stories of the Dretch terrorizing with wars, but to snatch sisters..."

Yansa shook her head, "We do not know enough, and believed these creatures were scary stories and nothing more. I never imagined the possibility of such a creature to be the source of our lost sisters...and I'm sorry for not making the connection. Aisha forgive me for the loss we have faced due to my ignorance."

Eshe turned and looked toward Yansa, standing and stepping closer, "We all grew lax in our faith."

Yes, everyone grew comfortable, believed they were safe, and forgot the truth of the Dretch. And for that, they suffered a great loss.

Mnyiri - 8

"If you would allow," Mnyiri raised her voice, trying to get her words across to Yansa. "I could help? I'm no elder, but I am a researcher, and I can help sift through the scrolls." She was also a traveler with many friends in the neighboring nations. Though they were earthlings, she wanted to find as much information about these creatures as possible to share with them and keep them safe.

Not that she would openly say that much in front of the crowd.

How long had it been since she had spoken with any of them? Too long, far too long for her liking, but getting to them now would be hard. The best she could do would be to find as much information as possible and send letters to them, hoping that it found them in time.

To Dyakida, she murmured, "That ought to keep me preoccupied while I'm here, don't you think? That and other things." She was trying to keep the others mind off the events that had transpired, as hard as that would be.

No is a very reasonable answer. Votzhem thought with pity... and a strange fatigue. He looked up to the elders. What did they say now?

"I can offer my assistance in that as well." he said, giving Mnyiri a nod of achknowledgement. "... And I believe my Sister Kaalnia also has experience with scrolls and old stories." How could he forget her regaling him with tales of this and that? Her hobby was the idea of an afterlife, a gruesome to talk about, especially when she had been recovering from gruesome wounds, but it did mean that she knew her way around incomplete and old tales... "I will talk to her about it when she arrives."

IF she arrived. Goddess, let her only be delayed...

Dyakida

Location: With Mnyiri!
--------------------

Mnyiri could do something for her tribe. Even though they had tried to kill her by sending her across a continent to a poison island full of Ex-Sisters, even though they considered her lesser for her Shifter blood, Mnyiri was able to stand up and offer her mind and wisdom.

What could Dyakida do? Make more weapons? Against a foe that might not be vulnerable to them? Against a foe that used magic? Dark magic that poisoned wood, plant, and beast... Magic that was wrong, inherently wrong.

Mnyiri was trying to comfort her. Or distract her. She was shivering, despite the heat, and she coudn't stop, but she owed it to Mnyiri to try. "Yes..." she said, "Even if they deny you, your time will be v-very much in demand, if only because you... you could not keep away from this, even if you tried." She managed. Which was a good thing. It was, even if it was dangerous.

Dyakida tried to regain some of her composure - a difficult task. "Please..." she began, stopping herself, "I mean, I... I could help you, if you think I can help. In any way." What could she do with scrolls?

Vermina- Post 6

The old stories were really true... Vermina wiped roughly at her eyes before attempting to stand back up. Her knees shook, her eyes wide as she watched the others express how they could help. What.. could she do?

A hand touched her shoulder, and she found herself looking up at her aunt. Right. Whatever it was, it had to be done.

She stepped forward as well with her aunt, lifting her chin slightly. "Whatever task needs doing, I will help as much as I can."

Rishima - Post 7

Even the mention of the word 'war' made Rishima's antennae sag a bit. He didn't care for the idea of another war, of more fighting, but at least it would be against an enemy that actually felt like an enemy? The last battle was one that had just made him feel empty instead of triumphant after all. Regardless of the Dretch threat though he hated the word 'war' and hoped that they were able to think of another solution before it came to that. If there was a way to stop them preemptively he was all for working toward that goal.

Turning his attention to the elders as they continued to speak he decided that he'd try to focus on their words for now. He'd focus and figure out what his next move was going to be. Or at least the move that came next after he went home to check on Gerraden, to make sure he was still safe. He was sure that he wasn't the only one among their sisters who wanted to make sure that their loved ones were alright given everything that had come to light.

There was now a lot weighing on his mind but he felt that at least a little of his worry and fear would be eased when he was made certain that Gerr was safe. After that he would prepare for whatever the next step was when it came to dealing with the Dretch.

Chapter 9: Grave Expectations

|| IC ||

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Yansa looked up as the hybrid approached. Other sisters began to offer their work as well, and she was quietly humbled by their dedication to supporting each other. An extra pair of eyes and an extra voice wouldn't hurt and the elders had their work cut out for them. Really, there was nothing to lose.

"For those of you who wish to offer your support, we can discuss more in the coming days. We will need more than simply scroll readers...many sisters have yet to arrive...and we know some of you have family across the sea. We will need extras to warn everyone in our lands and beyond...as well as patrols at all times."

"We know our enemies. We know how they look and how they play. It is important that everyone carry around dirt from the roots of Aisha for protection...and be prepared for dark magics. Never travel alone, I mean it...always have a sister by your side with a weapon to protect you. And know that if you leave our lands...you risk much more than surrounded by your sisters...Together, we are strong, and together we will prevail!"

Yansa turned to the elders, and they stepped to the side to prepare to leave. They had much to discuss and direct in the coming days. Eshe slowly moved forward, eyes looking out before looking up with concern. Turning, she approached Yansa who stilled from her discussion.

"Together as sisters...it is how Aisha willed it..." she spoke softly, "It is in grave times that we forget our differences and band together...no matter our coloring or our families..." She gestured to the many hybrids who were quick to speak up and support, "We must protect all of Aisha's children from this thread, Yansa..."

"Of course." The warrior was quick to reply, almost smirking, "We swear to protect all sisters."

Eshe smiled in return, that secret smile of hers, before coyly responding, "Even those banished across the sea?"

Silence. It was but a moment of silence before everyone erupted in outrage. Eshe simply held up her hand and waited for the reaction to stop, before continuing, "We all are crying for our sisters, lost to the darkness...but more have been lost beyond our sight. We need support from the entire sisterhood, as all of us are targets no matter where we reside. It's time we accepted this is beyond us..."

Yansa frowned, took a long moment before stepping closer. In a soft voice, hard to hear but still enough for the crowd, the elder responded with an even tone.

"Are you suggesting...we ask for help from those banished beyond the sea?" Yansa was over the pain of losing those close to her, and only resentment and anger remained. Many sisters waited with baited breath for the elder mystic to speak, wondering what she was thinking and why she would ever consider such a thing.

Eshe only smiled, before turning toward Danika as her smile transformed into a playful smirk. Her steps led her past the girl as she finally spoke, her voice echoing against the roots around her.

"I am but a humble servant, interpreting the word of our Great Mother. We must all strive to be reflections of her will, no matter how resistant we may be."

As Eshe walked away into the darkness of the shadows, Yansa and the elders took a moment to try and interpret what she was saying.

"Tomorrow, any who wish to offer support can report to the commons. Otherwise, stay together and stay vigilant. We have much to discuss and will provide more...guidance before our festival is done.
