With nothing else to do with himself but wait, Tristan retreated back to the table that housed the treats he was taking home with him. Resting his backside against the edge of the table, he braced himself with palms gripping the smooth surface of either side and resigned himself to watching Danny flit back and forth with various pastry moving and cleaning. While he could have attempted idle conversation, Tristan busied himself with thinking about the best route for them to take to get to Fiona's.

It was strange, mapping out a car ride when he was more familiar with bus routes and back ways.

Before he realized it Danny was returning and his face lit up with a grin and he grabbed his bag and followed the man out of the sweet's shop so he could lock up properly. Noticing the fidgety way his companion was playing with his tie, Tris' head tilted and he reached out to gently tap his wrist. "Are you okay?"

Maybe he was hyper aware because he was always a little more on edge at night than when the sun was up, but it concerned him to see happy, positive Danny looking like he couldn't wait to cross the parking lot and get into the safe confines of his car.

"I'm sure she's perfect, I can't complain. I - I ride the bus and I take a longboard around town." He didn't mention that he could have a car if he wanted, he chose not to trouble his already too kind housemate and he'd rather save his money to spend on repaying the kindness of his friends.

"I'm fine," Danny lied, his response a little too quick and a little too curt to sound genuine. The last thing he wanted to do was scare off his new friend with stories of what had happened, of how unsafe it was to be walking alone in the parking lot at night.

It'll be okay, he told himself, forcing his lungs to take in a nice, long, calming breath, Tristan is here. You're not alone. It'll be okay.

Hands dropped from the tie, green eyes lingering on the hand that had tapped his wrist. He needed to focus on other things to keep his mind occupied. The bag at the customer-slash-friend's side. The warmth of his hand. The cicadas buzzing in the distance.

It was easy to get caught up in his surroundings. Then again, perhaps that was what made it so easy to get mugged in the first place. Danny still didn't understand why he'd been chosen to get beat up - his car was old, he didn't carry cash with him and he worked at a shop attached to the mall, for goodness's sake.

Shaking his head, he banished away the thoughts of that horrible night, choosing instead to create a new memory of the current evening, instead.

Latching on to the other man's comment, he asked idly, "What's a longboard?"

Conversation would be the best distraction.

He took a moment to draw his hand away, concern flickering across his face, barely visible in the dim lighting of the mostly empty parking lot. "It's okay if you're not," he mumbled quietly, arm dropping back to it's place at his side. Shoulders rolled back in a shrug, the plastic of the bag in his other hand crinkling as his grip tightened.

Tristan wasn't looking at Danny anymore, not directly anyway, as they walked but his gaze would flick up from time to time to observe the worry lines on the man's forehead, the way almost-matching green eyes stared at his hand, and how he shook his head like he was trying to shake off a bad memory. The expression he wore was contemplative, but he looked away when idle chatter started up again.

"It's like a skateboard, but better." He was biased, definitely. "It's better for every day travel verses tricks. Faster than walking, more fun than a bike." He answered thinking of the arbor board sitting in his bedroom at the house. It had been one of the only impulse buys the man had allowed himself when he had the money. He didn't know what compelled him to buy it, or how he knew how to ride it at all, but the impulse had been there and he allowed himself one tiny thing.

"Not as useful as a car though."

He peered at the brunette curiously as he echoed, "A skateboard, but better?"

His mother had never been able to buy him much of anything that wasn't a necessity, when Daniel was a child. A Goodwill-purchased bicycle had been about the most extravagant birthday present that he could remember, aside from being given a few dollars every year to buy a handful of books from the secondhand store.

Skateboards, longboards, all of it was foreign talk to him. He'd seen kids on his street before with what he assumed were skateboards - could that have really been one of the things Tristan was talking about?

"Maybe you can show me, some time?"

He let the question dangle in the air for a moment, before following up, "My balance is laughable, but I'm curious to see what one looks like."

Arriving at the old white Honda, endearingly named Ol' Bess, he slid his key into the lock and twisted it, unlocking all of the doors with the motion. She'd been with him through thick and thin and while Danny knew he should look into getting a newer car, he couldn't bring himself to trade in his old, faithful friend - not yet.

Sliding in to the driver's seat, a sense of relief washed over him as soon as the car door closed. His expression relaxed, his smile was back in full force and Danny turned to glance over at his new friend.

"You'll have to remind me when we reach a turn," he admitted, turning the key in the ignition, "Driving at night usually means a missed turn or two for me, if someone doesn't remind me of where we're going."

For one reason or another, Tristan found himself surprised that Danny didn't know what a longboard was or that he seemed baffled by what a skateboard was. It was endearing almost, knowing that he wasn't the only one feeling a little out of sorts about everything when it came down to it.

"Yeah, that'd be fun." He answered, automatically with his head cheek turned towards his companion as the came to a halt by the car. Jingling keys distracted him and he found himself watching the way the key was inserted and turned to allow them access to the inside. Remembering that he had to round the front of the car to slide into the passenger seat, which he immediately had to scoot back because his long legs would be jammed against the dashboard if he didn't, he climbed into the car.

Noting the way Danny seemed to breathe easier once they were in the car, Tristan wondered if he should bring it up and decided, ultimately to let the sleeping dog lay.

"Right of course, go ahead and head to main street and I'll let you know from there." The ride home wasn't going to be anything terribly exciting, but he felt relatively at ease, grateful for the feeling as he cradled the bag of treats in his lap and watched the lights and streets pass as Danny took him home.
