Meara was smiling and relaxed, content to be talking with a friend, despite the fact that she was neglecting her responsibilities in doing so. Well, she tried to reason, what could possibly happen in the few minutes she had come over to speak with Ume?

Her companion noticed it first and Meara's stomach churned as she turned her gaze, eyes searching as she tried to fight down any sort of panic. Eventually she spotted the source of the commotion and she was on her paws in a moment.

"I-I don't know. I have to go help!" She stumbled over her reply to Ume, but her paws were steady and she plunged into the water. The cool water washed away her nerves and she swam over, her tail streaming out behind her. Beside her, a dark lion had gotten there first and was also reaching a paw out to help the youngsters. She moved so not to crowd them and then turned to the pale-colored boys.

"Is this everyone?" She asked, raising her voice to be heard among the sounds of the sea. She only saw two adolescent males here, but she would rather drown than miss someone else who was struggling in the water.

It hadn't been long since his own mate had expressed her own renewed desire to have yet more cubs, and in recent months he hadn't been entirely convinced now was the time. The Bahari had vastly improved since Ram had intervened to avoid his daughter causing considerable damage; and yet even until this point Xenon hadn't been completely sold on the King's game plan. It was only now that Ram had done something that Xenon considered quite extraordinary, and had transformed what was once a private ceremony into something really quite worthy of celebration.

Complex as Ram's plans might have been, it seemed he had no desire to brush away the old ways of the Bahari. Instead, he seemed more intent in revitalising them to the point that they would be embraced by both new and old. This in itself was smart, but the real clincher had been the manner in which he had done it. Xenon couldn't help but smirk as the petite cub waded into the water and made her case to the ocean. Delightfully, it was a 'case' that the ocean accepted and after further 'discussion', it seemed to accept her.

Yes, it had accepted a child of an unknown father.

A scandal in the past and one worthy of scorn, but on this occasion Ram had called the bluff of the elders. For now these cubs were innocent, they had yet to cause any fury with the great expanse, and as a consequence they had been embraced regardless of what their mothers might have done. Granted, this couldn't be said for all of those fatherless cubs, but for a fair few of them, the tidings were happy.

It would be difficult for any elder to dispute whether or not they were worthy of the pride now; no doubt there would be some, but it would take a while for them to talk around this!

Still, his gaze continud to follow the paddling cub and eventually he came to accept that perhaps she might be just a little tired. Thus, he swam towards her so that she could clamber on to the rock, at least to regain her breath. She could always jump back in later, but if her legs seized up now it would reather dampen the mood for her!

Huo and Shui eventually serviced, Huo spitting out what seemed like several mouthfuls of water after he'd bitten into the seaweed so thoroughly. Shui on the otherhand, was decidedly more muted. Suffice to say that the blue maned lion was tired, and as he leant on his brother he simply regarded Meara, and by extension Kaluwa and Shio with a rather disheartened shake of his head.

"Come on," Euphyrates finally broke the silence now that he had reached the gathered lions. He was more than adequate in size and strength for the teenager to bear his full weight on to and it would avoid Huo suffering from weariness in the process. "Grab hold, we'll get you to shore for now," he added with a smile and gave a nod to both Kaluwa and Meara - Shui, after some delay, managed to comply and slump on to the larger male's back as though he was a rather larger fish.

"Will he be all right?" Huo asked with a furrowed brow.

"I imagine so," Euphyrates replied as he began to swim back. "Once he catches his breath," he added with a wink. Evidently the light hearted and relaxed lion wasn't easily spooked despite what might have occurred.

"...Shio?" Huo asked suddenly as he turned to his own brother, only to observe that both Kaluwa and Meara were already well on the case of tending to him.

What had happened, they had never had a problem in the water before...

Unsurprisingly, while Huo would undoubtably head back into the water eventually, it seemed he needed a breather and it was with a small smile to the gathered adults that he made his own way back. He just needed a moment to gather his thoughts and composure.

If Meara wants to stay and help Kaluwa she can, otherwise she can head back to the shore with the other three, it's up to you!

The glaring wasn't going to subside any time soon - both Chessa and Durama were quite obviously put out by Peregrine's statement. If he had known this all along, then why hadn't he said anything? Ah, but of course, Peregrine was notorious for simply allowing individuals to theorise until it was fundamentally important to intervene... Perhaps now that Spectre's treatment was now reaching a critical stage, it was time to expose the truth. That being said, neither rabbit nor his mother, seemed to appreciate being kept in the dark by the clouded lion.

"It's the way he talks," Peregrine explained at last, finally caving to the disapproving gazes of his companions. "He recognised the Justicar, but failed to understand how. As quickly as he recognised him, his eyes dulled and he forgot," he raised his paw to tap at the bottom part of his cheek and grimaced. "Some at some stage he had a life where he knew those particular individuals, then he lost it to the creature that seems to frightened of these 'ghosts'..."

"That could simply be a result of paranoia in light of his capabilities," Chessa pointed out with a raised brow.

"I would believe this if it wasn't for the fact it continues to happen even when he settles. There is a disconnect there, and I do not know why or how it occured," Peregrine stated.

"Do you think Solomon would know?" Durama tapped his chin and then shook his head. "It seems unlikely actually, he seems to only remember him as he is now," he continued down his train of thought and frowned. "If we could locate the Justicar again, perhaps he could provide some clarity?"

"He might..." Chessa murmured softly. "But they seemed quite secretive about who and what they were."

"Maybe he'll have some wiggle room if he realises how important it is," the bunny mused.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He hadn't seen a cub in a very long time and this one seemed even smaller than most, the last he had seen were his own and even they had been much larger due to their birth mother and his own blood. Here, the tiny cub seemed to be suspended, her little paws beating periodically to keep her afloat as she...well he wasn't sure what she was doing to him. Based on her owlish stare she seemed to be assessing him just as much as he was attempting to assess her.
Alas, no sooner had he blinked than she had darted forward.
He flinched, just a touch, and then realised that she had stopped mere inches from his nose, having caught the world's tiniest fish in her maw. It was with a mischevous grin and what he thought was a giggle that the striped cub began to paddle her way back to the surface... Though it was in those moments that she seemed to tire and her ascent was slow.
He would have thought nothing of it, but something prodded at him to the point that he eventually pushed himself after her, allowing the youngster to settle on to his head as he returned to the surface. When they both broke through, it would make for an unusual sight, the pure white and almost ethereal lion still mostly submerged with a triumphant cub resting on his head - fish still pride of place in her mouth!
Tiamat was too young to understand the ways of the pride and why a cub born out of wedlock could be so disastrous to the pride. In truth, she wasn't even aware that she was one of the so-called rogue-blood cubs. Her father was in the pride and she had no need to question it. They even looked remarkably similar, feeding further truth to the lie she was not yet aware of.
Still, happily paddling close to Xenon she saw the rock and headed towards it, working her hind legs hard to propel herself through the shallows. Once there she pulled herself free of the water and shook herself hard - shivering at the cold wind against her wet fur.
She shook again to try and rid her whiskers of droplets and turned to see if any of her siblings were close by. She saw some of her friends returning to shore. Saw others she was not familiar with and realised that many of her siblings had already taken their swims. Had they been good, too? Had the sea welcomed them? She'd arrived a little tale to notice what had happened with Shui - though in her excitement she probably would have overlooked it anyway.
Shio struggled to stay afloat, focusing all his strength on paddling his paws. He was thankful they were in the cove where the waves weren't too high, but it was the sea and some still got through. They bobbed him up and down as he tried to point himself towards land, and when he did he saw a number of lions entering the water and swimming their way. Thank the gods! He struggled to move towards them, panting heavily and getting mouthfuls of sea water.
He was about to shout that his brothers needed help, but a blue and orange mane surfaced not far from where he had been treading water. Huo looked winded but Shui looked miserable and he was glad there was help just a few strokes away.
"Thank you," he gasped, grimacing in pain as his cramp flared up again. It felt like a thousand claws digging into his side all at once and he took Kaluwa's offered paw with little grace and dignity. He dragged himself over to the larger lion as his brothers did the same, hitching a ride on their backs to keep from exerting all of their energy. He lowered his head, resting it between the lion's shoulder blades as he sucked in lungful after lungful of air, his eyes trained on his brothers to make sure they were all right.
The green lioness, submerged below the surface of the ocean with her eyes firmly shut and limbs free floating about, including her wings got lost in the moment. The ocean was cradling her body in a way that she had never felt before - even flying didn't have this feeling of pure freedom. The bliss was amaz..
Reality hit, her red-orange eyes opened and shock burned through her like a wicked fire. Starting from the tip of her nose, to the ends of her toes. Fear was engulfing her and she began to flail. Yet the ocean was calm, serene and captivating as she imagined the horrors and began to struggle beneath the surface sending a wild number of bubbles up. While she panicked the ocean was just gently pushing her, slowly moving the flailing lioness towards the sweet freedoms of the sandy beaches that she came from. As she grew closer to the beaches her head lifted above water, wings splashing about now wildly and paws splashing at it's surface.
As if that scene wasn't enough.. she didn't realize (in her panic) that her bum had reached sand below the water. The ocean, caring as it had been through the whole process gave her a gentle nudge and Krisis finally realized she was nearly safe. The lioness did try to stand, a couple times, but her legs had become jelly and she felt HUGE.. like a beached whale, and she told herself that it was because the weightlessness in the water. So she did what could to free herself.. she rolled. Wings tucked against her and legs flailing while trying to roll her body in the water then to the dry lands. This was where she belonged.
The final scene was not pretty...
"Oof." She said, making a noise of relief at the way the sand seemed to wrap her up in a warm blanket. Her pelt was filthy as she lay on her back. Paws lazily positioned above her, tail straight out and appearing frayed, while her wings lay crooked beneath her. Krisis looked to the side and spied her prized tiara stuck in the sand and panicked for a moment thinking a stone was missing. Then she watched as some sand fell free - phew. "Solomon.. Solomon!" She grumbled helplessly at the pale male she knew would be watching, then tossed some of her dirty mane free from her eyes to try to see him. "Where are you?"
"You know, you'd think it would act as a flotation device," Solomon remarked. Sure enough, in her panic she had conveniently rolled right up to his paws, and he was staring down at her with a raised brow and a very wry smile. It didn't take a genius to know the ocean had accepted her, this was perhaps the lightest manner in which someone had been deposited on to the shoreline so far... But that might also have been because she was a little more fragile than she seemed to be letting on.
"Good news," he added. "You and your tiny minions seem to have been embraced," he confirmed and offered his paw to help her up. For a lioness who had often prided herself on being well kept and graceful, she was the opposite now. For all intents and purposes she looked like the biggest wreck on the beach despite having been one of the most successful.
"Congratulations, now perhaps you would be so kind as to get up? It would seem you won't be providing us with any fish today but you could at least give yourself a tiny bit of a spruce up," he cooed before leaning in to whisper in her ear.
"Because you've got sand everywhere..." he teased, his tone one of mock horror.
"Just a wee bit." Organa teased back with a growing smirk. She was still too uneducated in the customs and importance of this event to realize that even with the day ending without any major accidents that there would still be some bruised egos and disappointed kids. That little revelation would just have to wait until dinner!
"I agree, it was." She shook her head at the concept of failure being brought up again. "They didn't die though? I'm sure that they were all hoping to have a great swim out there, win the approval of their peers, and all that jazz that comes along with it. In the bigger scheme of things however this has just been a bad day for them. They've proved themselves to at least have enough self preservative to realize they're in a bad spot and exit the waters, the rest will come in due time if they have enough courage to suck up their bad experience and try their luck again." If not? Well then they could continue to live out their lives as incomplete members of society. It was a fair trade-off for not having the drive to push yourself against adversity.
Organa was taken back by Tala's sudden outburst. Blinking rapidly she peered beamused at the other lioness. "That's..." She began before stopping herself, her brows furrowing together. Why she personally might have relished the idea of not being able to have kids not everyone shared the same jaded opinion as her on the subject. As it were it appeared that Tala would have fallen in line to having the exact opposite views as Organa! She could recognize that despairing about her current situation to someone would have probably killed to be in her shoes would be.. tactless (among other things) to say the least.
Damn, what would someone like Malphas or Peregrine say in this situation?
Taking in a deep breath she finally settled on the least problematic reply that she could think of for the moment, "I'm sorry to hear that."
Biting her lower lip she couldn't help but let out a snort at the jab. "That's the understatement of the century. Knowing them they probably would find someway to spin it around to be something positive like..." Holding a paw up she gave a mocking wag of the finger as she spoke, "Well at least you have other avenues to motherhood open to you! Adoption or surrogacy are still on the table! We just need to find the right fit for you."
"Hey it's no problem, little dude. We all need a hand every once and a while." He tried at least to reassure Shio, though whether or not it had any affect would all depend on the young prince.
After readjusting his weight to make sure that his passenger wouldn't be ending up back into the water as soon as he came out of it Kaluwa took off following after Euphyrates. "I would imagine so, no one else is frantically waving at us for now." He teased back to Meara. Though he did do a quick double check over his shoulder to be sure now that she mentioned it.
Better safe than sorry, right?
Finally making it back to shore Kaluwa deposited Shio as softly as he could onto the sand. Circling around him he did a quick once-over the adolescence to make sure that he didn't have any other injuries besides his ego to account for. "Hm, well the good news is I'm pretty sure you'll live at least. But what do you think, you doing okay there?"
To say things weren't going to plan was a understatement for sure. As soon as she made her way into official 'test' area Yukio got the feeling that something just wasn't right. Her grand plan to surprise her friends was quickly chucked out the window in favor of just making sure no one was dying!
Well Shui and Huo weren't dying exactly, but they certainly weren't having a good time..
With a sharp inhale Yukio started to franticly paddle her way over to them, hoping to catch up with the mighty group of recuers.
"Hey wai-!" She was interrupted by the sound of someone calling out her name. Stopping for a moment in her mad dash Yukio peered around curiously. She could have sworn that she heard her name being called and it sounded a whole lot like a certain rock. "Maji?"
...No response. Huh, must have been her imagination. Shaking off the weird echo Yukio pressed forward once again.
Unfortunately she didn't get very far before out of the corner of her eye she caught sight of a familiar twing of green heading into the water. That wasn't what concerned her, it was what was on the particular cub that had her worried!
Surely he knew better than to go swimming with a full bag? Right...right? No, apparently he did not. "Maji!" She cried out before diving back under the water after him.
Young Jaal was heading into this late, feeling silly he had overslept. Well him and his brother had overslept. Goodness this was completely unlike him, though he wanted to blame someone else he just couldn't. It was his own fault. This was something that he had heard about and whole heartedly wanted to do to prove himself, not only to himself but to the pride. So he headed down to the water having an idea of what to expect. He noticed his brother dragging along behind him too.
Havarl was blaming Jaal for the fact they were getting to the rites of passage late. They had been play fighting far too late the previous night and despite their mother reminding them to sleep they had not. Of course that blame also fell on him but it was mostly Jaal's fault as he also hit the area where everyone else was. He looked about, eyes taking it all in. So many were here! They probably were going to be noticed for coming in late.
Tukwana waded back to shore and padded up to his sister. He smiled gently and groomed his sisters ears." Next time Idone, we can come back." Grooming his sisters ears he was quickly swatted away by an angry paw.
"Jog on Tukwana." She growls, shoving her darker brother away. "I know I can try again." She grumbles. "I'll just be over here." She snorts at Tukwana and settlesherself on the sand with her head on her paws. She felt silly, some of the little cubs had managed to be accepted by the sea but she had not been. It wasn't like she couldn't swim after all. HUFF!
Liviyathan welcomed her cubs as each of them returned from the waves. Some of them were successful, Tiamat and Lusca, two of her smaller children seemed to have been accepted by the waves and she admired their tiny little forms zipping through the salty water. It seemed her twins though, Kelpie and Kappa seemed to be having more of a problem. She pulled her twins to her chest and whispered encouragement to them both. She knew they would be okay, she knew they would succeed in the future.
Lusca rolled out of the water and padded up to his mother happily. "Mama, mama, I swimmed!" He exclaims bundling himself against his mothers side. He felt triumphant.
Kelpie frowned, she was so happy to be in her mothers arms but, the thought of her failure saddened her. She could feel her twin brother next to her and she groomed him gently. Her mothers words, she knew they were true, but for now, they didn't help. The sea did not want her today though a couple of her siblings had succeeded.
The male that got there before her seemed to have everything sorted and while Meara was there to provide extra support, she felt as though she hadn't been doing her job as well as she would have liked.
Oh, foolish Meara! She chastised herself. I should have been doing a better job keeping watch over the little ones, not socializing!
Ears perked when she was addressed, she nodded and began to help lead the others to the shore and soon she found her paws touching sand below them. She was panting, but more from the residual panic than any form of exhaustion brought on by the swim.
Looking up, she noticed two new adolescent boys going into the water and she made a mental note to watch them too, in case there was another accident. Looking to the ones she brought to the shore, she did a headcount and then sank to the sand in relief.
"Is everyone okay?" She asked the others, just to be sure they were nothing more than a little shaken up. While awaiting their replies, she turned her eyes and fixed them upon the dark purple males, scanning the water a few times to see if anyone else needed her aid.
The ocean colored male had waited a long time for this. His tail twitched back and forth eagerly as he watched the waves rush in. He was watching for that slight pause in the waves that would let him enter easily the water that seemed almost as home as the sand dunes. Kaito grinned to himself. Colored like the ocean it felt like a good omen. Or maybe the ocean would smack him for being cocky.
Either way he planned to enjoy himself and then enjoy the feast that he helped supply. Or at least he hoped to help! The moment he was watching for came. Kaito plunged into the chill surf.
