"Weird," Mark looked at the aerosol, "I thought this wasn't supposed to like, smell bad." It did, and it was more the paint thinner bad than the Axe body spray bad. Just to make sure, he sprayed Rep with it again.
Caelius had already turned to leave when Mark intercepted, "Wait- wait-, um, boss, I think, maybe, and this is now, like, just a suggestion now, but maybe he should know what we're doing if- um if it involves Rep." The good news is if there were any cameras, there weren't any proper walls to hold them against in case it wanted to record Death assistants spontaneously dying
The Death lead looked at Rep for a long moment and it felt like she was watching too. "Do you think you deserve to know," he said quietly.

Rep coughed again, rolling over and away from Mark as he tried not to suffocate on whatever the ******** he was being sprayed with.
When Cael looked at him he gave up on getting up off the floor and went limp like a scolded dog, averting his gaze in much the same way. "No." he said. "I don't. It is your decision, sir."

As the Death lead turned around to leave, Mark furrowed his eyebrows and jogged up to Rep. "How is it like, you seriously cannot zip your mouth around Charlotte even with me yelling at you, and you have a chance to actually ask things now and you just-" he made an overly complicated hand gesture and sprayed Rep again on the shoulder when he thought Rep wasn't looking.
Mark suddenly looked devious. "Hey bo- err Sir," he shouted to his lead's retreating form, "Rep knows all about Sam. Uh everything."
That got Caelius to actually stop and stare incredulously at Rep.

"Because I don't ******** respect Charlotte." he muttered irritably. Besides, asking questions was rude, it implied that you thought you were entitled to know the answers and he had never felt like he deserved the answers to anything at all, especially not from Cael.
He froze when Mark turned Cael's attention back on him. He didn't know anything about Sam other than that the guy didn't like him much and had a weird tattoo.
He shrugged demonstratively.

"Right, which is why it's very secret and we'll never talk about it." Mark pressed, trying his luck, or just Rep's luck, "About the whole tradeoff for Sam... uel. And how if we imagine each legacy has a um, legacy to fulfill, like let's say it's better if we keep him anyway, and um, uh, Rep will help us. Secrets. Conversation here. Sharing." That part was actually said out loud.
"Rep doesn't know about Samuel." Caelius stated flatly.
"No," Mark trailed, "But he could, and then he could help you- err us and maybe we can have some ice cream and a long walk on the beach while we discuss this?"
More awkward silence.
"Samuel's not really a Hunter," Mark suddenly blurted.

When it came to curiosity, Rep tended to leave s**t well enough alone. He'd found that the more you pried, the more trouble you got in and that if you just avoided the horrible s**t you were more happy overall. He also figured that if Cael opted not to tell him something it was because he didn't trust him to handle it and that was fine, he wasn't a smart guy, he wasn't someone who could have useful insights into anything much. He just hit things.
Still, as Mark went on, he listened carefully. Samuel by the sound of it had been obtained in a trade for whatever reason, was linked to some sort of secret and the legacies of course.
He didn't properly understand it, but as Mark went on, it made even less sense. Still. He made the only assumption he really could under the circumstances.
"Is he like that wee lassie with no face?" he asked, "Or like the wee boy that Creation becomes. A legacy thing." He could also be a student or just a weaponless hunter. "Does it matter, he's working for us just like everyone else is."

"Yes, and no," Mark began, looking at his lead for cues. Instead of Caelius, there was now just a portal there, and he hurriedly rushed into it in fear of being stranded with just Rep again.
If Rep followed Mark with relative speed he would catch the tail end of Mark and his lead's conversation regarding something about not bothering to negotiate with Charlotte again, and the Death Assistant was texting as they walked.
"That was progressive of you," Mark said to Rep as soon as he exited the portal down the stairs of the lighthouse, "If this was Lucky he would have at least freaked out ten times. You're like, familiar with clones right?"

Rep sighed and followed Mark through the portal without quite at much haste as the other man, slouching down the steps.
"I've heard about them, I was the one who figured out how to kill them for whatever ******** weird reason." It still upset him to think he'd ever had an even half way decent idea in his head, it felt like he'd betrayed some long term act he'd been maintaining.
"Lucky wants to solve things and understand them." he said. "I just want things to be okay."

"Yeah, cool, kind of like that," Mark walked backwards while tailing Caelius back to the office, giving Rep the double thumbs up, "But not actually a clone but also made outside you know? Actually that was a bad analogy more like you know how people like you know and they have a baby and that baby grows up, like that right?"
Apparently either the Death Assistant thought everyone came from storks or he was just straight up crazy. "How do you feel about Sam? For the record, I had nothing to do with his extremely coincidental name."

Reps brain practically creaked under the strain of trying to visualise what Mark was talking about.
"He's about as nice as everyone else in this division." he said vaguely, politely leaving out that the division also contained Cael and Oz and maybe even Mark.

"Oh," Mark apparently came to a similar conclusion and hesitated for a second. "Well, give him a chance okay, he can be a nice guy. Don't tell anyone about this, well I mean you can tell some people-"
-"No"-
-"You can tell no people," he corrected after his lead's intervention. Mark paused to send a few tweets and nearly fell over in the process of trying to walk backwards. "Zero are the amount of people that-"
- And it was there that the Death assistant accidentally bumped into his lead who suddenly stopped, turned around, and looked at the two.
"Because of your persistent concern regarding Samuel, the two of you are now responsible for observing his progress. You will report anything usual directly to me, and unusual means well planned observation as you apparently have nothing else better to ******** do with your time."
"That's not true, I have my rps," grumbled Mark just quiet enough for Rep could hear him.
They paused just long enough for a playful breeze to sweep through their trajectory, making all of them look very dramatically windswept. It could have been romantic - as in never romantic.
"You are both dismissed. I would consider carefully how you approach your assignment."
Mark took that as a cue to stop following his lead and then tweeted something else and then looked up at Rep. "Right. Cool, so, uh, watching people. You're like, super good at that right because guess what that's your job now and you'll get paid for it maybe perhaps I have no clue."

"Okay not a soul." Rep said obediently before freezing up as Cael rounded on them. Inwardly and only inwardly he railed at having another weight of responsibility set on his shoulders. He wanted to argue, instead he nodded and murmured yes sir under his breath.
He sighed wearily as Cael departed and gave Mark a grim look. "Am I to take that as "Sucks to be you, assistant of the assistant, Mark out."?"

Mark actually looked super offended. "Uh, you're welcome. Now you'll have an excuse to see his highness whenever you want." Never mind the fact that Rep already did. "I figure that's payment enough for like messing up the ice cream though I do have these-"
- He gave Rep a two-for-one coupon to Baskin Robbins and then a bag of discount Valentines chocolates. "I heard like, fro-yo is all the rage these days, you know the ones with the swirlies and toppings and stuff. The secret is frozen gummi bears. Oh yeah, the chocolates were like eighty percent off, I was going to keep them but I'm on a strictly no white chocolate diet."

Rep rolled his eyes. "The more he sees me the more likely he is to lose his patience one day and ditch me out of the division." Which mercifully for now hadn't happened.
He did look genuinely pleased at the chocolate though, he had a notoriously sweet tooth. "Thanks." he said. "Just sad I didn't get to get any ice cream while we were over there, but I was the one who ******** it all right up, I can never justify like, using my leave for snacks."
He smirked "I ******** love white chocolate too, so anything you don't want, just give to me."

"You know," Mark took a moment to think, "in my long history of histories I don't think I've ever seen anyone kicked out of this division. And I know because I've totally never been kicked out of a division ever." He was saying the last part quite dramatically for some reason.
Something rang, and he immediately pulled out his cellphone, but didn't pick up the phone, sliding it to silent. "Oh yeah, hey, can I have the suit back nowish? If I give it back the same day, I don't have to pay the deposit."
