"Pretending to be fine is really tiring," Jordan agreed, subdued. "I don't like it but if I don't do it people will worry about me too and I don't want that."
He gave Melvin a puzzled look. "If seeing shadows means you're infected I was infected before you," he pointed out logically.

"Yeah...well...Well you didn't see Her so it could be worse. Just do it." He said, shaking the med-kit once more before getting progressively frustrated and anxious till he dropped down and started to tear open the case, pulling out the disinfectant spray and gesturing, unable to touch him.
"Hold out your hand."

Jordan stared at Mel for a few moments, then shrugged and held his hand out, submitting to the cleaning without further argument. "I don't think it's a big deal but okay," he said.

It was a big deal, and the fact Jordan didn't think it was a big deal made him feel worse. He made one friend that got what he was going through and yet he still felt he was ruining it somehow. That even in the totem pole of people who could see shadows, he was still somehow weirder.
Frowning, he stared at Jordan's hand and nothing else, spraying it until it was completely wet and too much had been used before he stopped.
He didn't say anything else, turning to stuff everything back into the case.

Jordan wiped his hand on the blanket to dry it off and rested his chin on his knees. "Sorry," he said awkwardly. Then he paused. "Have you seen any shadows since we woke up here?"

He was placing things neatly one by one, touching them with his fingertips once everything was in to neatly organize them.
"Not since I got here. No. Kinda..worried about more than that." He then looked out at the setting sun and, closing the kit, moved to grab their light and bring it back. "They might come out now."
He sat back down with Jordan, turning the light on and setting it down between them.
".......sorry."

"I haven't either. If they come out then they'd have to climb pretty high to get up here and we've got the trapdoor closed, so I think we'll be okay," Jordan said, although he sounded a little uncertain.
As Melvin turned the light on, he dug a granola bar out of his bag and opened it. "It's not like it's your fault," he said to the apology.

He didn't acknowledge what Jordan said, but stopped trying to wipe disinfectant onto his hands too. Following Jordan, he went for a granola bar too and leaned back. It wasn't the most comfortable place to sleep, but it was quiet here, high up, and was probably the most secure he could feel without being in his own bed.
"What do you think the shadows mean? Like - what they are?"

"I think they're alive," Jordan said thoughtfully. "I don't know what they want but I think they're alive somehow. Maybe they want to hurt us?"
I don't want to hurt humans, said the voice in his head, sounding vaguely hurt.
Huh? Are you a shadow?
Maybe? I don't know.
"Um... my voice said he doesn't want to hurt humans," Jordan relayed, sounding a little dubious.

He considered that and looked down, speaking to her.
"Hello?"
Hello.
"Um..."
I've been listening this whole time. Nope. Don't want to hurt ya. You don't look like something I'd eat and I don't want to keep you.
"She said she doesn't want to eat us." His attention went back to Jordan.
"Maybe they are just around I guess. I don't know. The one I met tried to kill me though." He reached up, rubbing his scar.
"Made the room full of bugs......I had to go to the hospital."

"Maybe some do want to hurt us but some don't?" Jordan theorized. He shivered a little at the thought of a room full of bugs. "That sounds gross. How long did you have to stay in the hospital?"

"I broke my leg. So I had to be there for a bit, but they wanted to do more tests because I kept seeing things. The...bugs in the scar kept moving. I kept telling them, but they thought I had hurt my head. Had a concussion from the fall since I never acted like that before. They wanted to check my head to make sure I wasn't messed up from hitting it on the way down."
His arms slowly moved to wrap around him as he stared into the setting sunlight.
"None of em ever try and hurt you?"

"You only saw stuff after that?" Jordan asked. He kind of wanted to ask about the bugs in the scar moving, but he also kind of didn't, and he thought that Melvin probably wouldn't want to talk about that, either.
He thought about the question for a moment. "Mostly they just watch, or follow," he said. "The one under the bed grabbed me once." He was quiet for a moment. "I screamed," he admitted.

"Uh huh. As long as I can remember. Andy too, I figured out he could see them too when he was like two and he kept pointing at them," Jordan said. "I tried to make him stop though."
"Yeah, there's boxes and stuff down there but it's still there sometimes. Not always, just sometimes, you never know when it's going to be ..." He crumpled up the wrapper from his granola bar and stuck it into a pocket on the bag, rather than tossing it away.
