The odd mechanical device broke down further under their joint abuse and Misha smiled grimly as another piece of metal dropped off the unit and sank. She glanced up towards the air bubbles again. They seemed intact but, really, she would like to get out of the water as soon as possible. She adjusted her grip on her tree branch and swung like she had seen ballplayers do. The connection shuddered the device and sent shivers up her arm. She glanced at Brian, wide-eyed with surprise.

Brian felt a mighty judder go through the thing under his feet and he turned up to Misha to see her looking rather surprised at it all. At least neither of them had been electrocuted, right? He reached up for her hand to try and recruit her help in prying the wires out of the machine. Whether she was comfortable ducking out of the bubble was her own choice, but he was pretty sure they could undo this thing with enough underwater strength.

When Brian took her hand, Misha could not quite help but smile. Then she followed his gesture towards the device and she muffled the expression with a solemn frown and a nod. She squeezed his fingers in hers. Of course she would help. That's what she was there for, after all. She was not leaving him. She would never abandon him.

Taking a deep breath, Misha let him tug her from the bubble again and draw her to the side of the rusted tangle of metal and wires. She gave his hand one more quick squeeze, affection and understanding all at once. Then she released his hand and pushed down to wedge her branch beneath the wires. She frowned again and set her jawline. With a sudden push, the branch ripped lose the wires and Misha tumbled forward with a reflexive scream despite the water surrounding them both.

Everything was so loud down here! For a moment he thought Misha might have been electrocuted, but what in the world would have done it? When he recognized it hadn't happened, he grabbed her by the waist and tried to right her. Briefly he checked the lights that had been lit before, and they were out. He patted Misha's hip three times in quick succession and smiled. Boy, he could use some air. He started up toward the nearest bubble and reached down for Misha. They had to breathe and get the hell out of here. He couldn't feel his fingers any more.

She went with him very willingly, taking his hand and letting him pull her upwards to the bubble. The moment they reached it, she dropped her branch and grabbed Brian. Misha pulled him close in a hug and buried her face in his shoulder. He was safe and in one piece. "Can we go now?" she whispered.

Brian nodded. "Let's get out of here."

This had been one hell of a night, from the apparent haunting to the crazed spirit and back again to the strange electrical gadget in the water. Maybe it was over. At the very least it was going to be a very strange report to make to the higher-ups at the Prytaneum. He didn't want to admit that he might have killed the Lady of this particular Lake. He shook his head in response to this thought and started up toward the next bubble, looking back to be sure that Misha could follow.

He should not have worried; Misha followed him very closely indeed from bubble to bubble as they made their way to the shore again. At one point, though, she stopped and squinted up through the water. It was hard to tell but something moved in the distance, slipping down from a dark shadow above them. She shivered and reached blindly for Brian's hand. Her grey eyes stayed locked on the movement, though, unable to tear her attention away from it, all of the adrenaline in her body surging to the surface again in fear and readiness.

It seemed to be human shaped, perhaps even female. It paused when it felt Misha's attention and turned back briefly to raise what appeared to be a hand. Then, in a graceful twist, currents and trails of something flowing behind it, it dove for the depths of the lake.

Misha bit her lower lip and looked to Brian for answers. Another water woman or the same one? "Where did you put our crazy friend?" she asked softly.

Brian took Misha's hand without question. His focus was on retreating, so he hadn't noticed the strange shape in the water. In fact, it might have frightened him more. He turned to her when she spoke, though.

"Up on the raft."

That was it before he continued up. The trail of bubbles led them nearly to shore. When they broke the surface, Brian turned back toward the raft Misha had asked about, and noted that it seemed to be empty, just floating there in the water. He looked around it, but saw no corpse. Odd.

"Come on," he said, even though his feet were going numb and he was pretty sure he couldn't walk a straight line to the lake house. They were both bound to catch hypothermia out here. The air already felt far too cool on his cheeks.

Already shivering violently, Misha nodded. She left one hand in Brian's but wrapped her free arm around her torso in an attempt to conserve any body heat she could. Her bare feet felt like blocks of ice the moment they stepped out onto the shoreline and her hair hung down her back like a heavy, sodden cloak. She clenched her jaw to keep her teeth from chattering for a moment.

After a few steps, though, she ventured, "T-the raft is empty. I-I think she went away." Misha paused to catch her breath and bite back another shudder. She squeezed his hand and walked faster beside him. "S-saw somethin' dive into the w-water."

"Oh?" For a moment, he didn't feel so cold any more, but it was just a moment. Maybe he hadn't killed someone today after all? He certainly preferred to believe that over the alternative. Fine. So she had survived.

Hopefully their gods' protection magic worked against cutting the s**t out of your feet on the shore. They'd probably have to check when they got there, because he couldn't feel anything right now. Luckily, the door was open (had they come out that way in a stupor?) and he held it open for Misha only long enough to let her get inside. He walked fast behind her, locked the door, and began to peel his clothes off right there in the entryway.

"You can have the shower first." He whipped a sopping-wet t-shirt to the floor. "Goose bumps" did not begin to explain the mountains he felt growing on his arms.

"Sh-shower?" Misha stared at him like he had grown another head, so cold that she could take precious little joy in the fact that Brian, a very attractive man indeed, was stripping down in front of her. "Are you crazy? We were just in the water. I think we've had enough water for a while, don't you?"

On the other hand, skinning out of their wet clothing was probably a very smart idea. While she still shivered almost violently, being in the house and out of the night air and wind definitely helped. Getting out of her clothing probably would help more. With that thought, she peeled off her clinging t-shirt and let it fall to the floor.

He couldn't blame Misha for not wanting to bathe herself in more water after climbing out of the lake, but he'd also rather she not develop hypothermia and die on him. He was having a little trouble getting out of his desperately clinging pants and was bent over at the moment to try and get one leg out at a time.

"Warm water'll help better than anything else. Just go warm up. It might sting at first, but it'll be worth it when you don't freeze to death." He also wanted some privacy to change his shorts in, although there were other rooms for that too.

"Oh." Misha stood upright for a moment, taking in his explanation. Then she shook her head, ignored her goosebumps, and started peeling down her jeans. Already tight to begin with, the water had only made the situation worse until she had to squirm and wriggle to get them off. "Do you even think the water is still hooked? I mean, I don't know."

She overbalanced as she tried to step out of her jeans and came up hard against the wall with a soft grunt. She glanced at her upper arm and frowned to see blue and black, finger shaped bruises blossoming on the skin there. "Damn." She twisted and set her back against the wall for support as she finished getting out of her jeans. "Besides... Psycho," she muttered, cheeks flushing when she looked up at Brian.

It wasn't the fact that she stood before him in a pretty floral bra and panty set. It was the fact that she even considered a knife-wielding maniac as a possibility just as likely as hypothermia.

Oh, no. He hadn't thought of that. Brian face twisted both because his foot was stuck in his pants and because there might not be any warm water at all. No heat meant they were going to have to try a hell of a lot harder to warm up tonight. "We might as well try."

His pants made a heavy "plop" sounds as they hit the floor and he looked up to Misha with brows furrowed. Was she calling him a psycho?

"Wait, what?" The floral undies were, at the moment, ineffective. He was pretty damn cold. He didn't strip any further than his own clinging skivvies, though. He wasn't about to go nude in front of Misha, even if his junk was freezing.

Misha's hand came up, fist clenched, and she stabbed it forward a few times as she made high-pitched "deen deen deen" noises. Then she shrugged, blushed more, and wrapped her arms around her torso. She had to tense her jaw to keep her teeth from chattering. Little curls of dark hair clung to her cheeks and shoulders.
