Damn these birds! When she had first seen Hitchcock’s “The Birds” she didn’t really get it, the movie wasn’t scary, wasn’t thrilling, the birds really didn’t seem to lend much peril or danger … she reconsidered her position on the movie now- this was bloody terrifying! (Even if these birds actually were monstrous and not just crows.)

No, you know what? This was worse than “The Birds”, far worse, This was a twisted mash-up of HItchcock’s thriller AND Hercule’s Stymphalian Birds! Really though, could these be the same birds of legend? Her memory of the tale was foggy (the constant barrage of wings overhead wasn’t helping), but weren’t they giant birds that terrorized a city?

[Exit to Hotel]

Finally, the hotel! She had left a smattering of blood trailing behind her in the snow- some her own and some the birds’, but finally she made it to the doors where the other Chosen and civilians had taken cover. Now to regroup and put an end to this problem.

By the time she reached her shield, her coat was pretty much torn to shreds and she just needed to take a second and hide under her shield, in the snow. This was certainly not her finest moment, but she needed to catch her breath. Once she'd done that, she heaved the shield again and made a run for it. Sort of. Hard to run in snow this high. But she made it a couple yards.

As she continued to smack birds out of the way with her shield, Rory slowly made her way to the safety of the hotel.

Ernst had heard that the ski lodge was under attack, but he hadn't been prepared for whatever this was. This place was wrecked - he wasn't sure it'd be insulated at all. Well - he'd checked his backpack. They'd only packed for a few days, perhaps two at most. He didn't need to worry about that, right? In and out.

Either way, there were ******** huge birds here, and it was all he could do to stick his damn shield up and get out of the way of whoever was coming behind him. He darted to the side and relaxed for a moment, looking around for whatever that hotel was supposed to be, and that was his mistake. A bird's sharp talons raked at his shoulder, and he hissed and brought his shield back up belatedly. Were there still people here? Wouldn't they think it weird that he had a giant medieval shield?

Did that even matter right now?

There was someone shouting from under a chair, about people holing up at the hotel. "You should come find cover, too," Ernst huffed. He couldn't really offer a hand, but it was stupid that anyone was sticking their neck out here. "Come on, I bet this shield can cover us both," he added, although he wasn't sure why exactly he was doing it. Well...he was a pretty altruistic guy. He just didn't usually like to get so close to the action.

It'd have been nice if he'd had more warning. He'd thought it'd just be transporting the civilians. That was what he'd unwillingly signed up for, right? He shook his head as a bird struck him again: the tower shield did cover the person - a woman with stringy red hair and ski goggles - who'd emerged from under the chair. Unfortunately, it couldn't also cover his entire body, which meant that he'd left himself exposed to attack.

"Which way's that hotel again?" Ernst asked, but after a few seconds realized that the question was pointless. Literally anyone human-shaped here was headed in the same direction. He guessed he should also run that way. But they needed to do it in synch, or they'd lose cover... "I'm gonna count," he panted. With any luck she got the idea: on zero, they could run together.

Unfortunately, she did not start running as he counted down. But she really didn't need to be helping people: there were plenty of recruits coming with weapons and stuff. He had cover for her. And if she stopped trying to help others, Ernst wouldn't be getting shredded by birds right now. He mashed his shield upward uselessly, pushing both hands against it.

Ernst couldn't leave her behind at this point, either, though. He freed a hand to tug at her giant coat, which didn't offer much grip. "Come on," he grumped. "My hair is dying."

She wasn't really budging.

Fine - he could go for someone else. "You - come with me," he told someone without a weapon, hefting his shield. This didn't really work that well against an enemy that was making aerial attacks, but he had no other choice. He'd already picked his damned weapon. They were a bit more cooperative, but that didn't mean that Ernst escaped any scratches as they ran.

Yeah, maybe Prytaneum should've been a bit more choosy, and picked, like, only the Ares people for this. Or Hermes, maybe? They were supposed to be sneaky or something. Ernst was just a filmmaker! While he'd had practice with this shield, he wasn't really the kind of guy to fight rabid birds, or whatever this was. He wasn't much for adventure at all unless it was vicarious, and he got to control every bit of it.

Actually, that made him sound like a Dungeons and Dragons player. The thought made him huff out a laugh even despite the relentless onslaught of beak and talon.

Ernst found himself having to actually attempt (which was really the key word here) to contort his body to dodge the barrage of blows. "Let's try heading this way," he called to his companion, and he turned his shield vertical and thrusted it upwards, just because that seemed to be a little less tiring than holding it over him like a giant, super heavy umbrella. At least he was still able to hit those things, even if he seemed to be worse at covering the damage now. It was okay, though, he found: holding his shield this way meant that he had more reach, which meant he could jab at the birds before they ever got within reach of his little group of refugees. "Someone hold the door!" he said, once the hotel entrance was within view, and he kept fending off the birds for a little while as people darted in.

It'd been tiring, though, and more people were approaching with weapons. He didn't need to do this alone - he could figure out now how to get a headcount, or get whoever was out here to safety. Was the hotel safety? Were they gonna transport them to a town? Was there supposed to be a briefing somewhere?

Whatever. He lowered his shield as someone else raised their own weapon, and he finally entered the hotel. Time to collapse. Then figure out what he was actually supposed to do here.

Jan had braced himself as he stepped into the flames, holding the coat to him as if it could protect him from any horrible things that might lie beyond. It wasn't quite enough to prepare him for the bedlam of the lodge, surrounded by the sound of flapping wings.

With surprising speed he ducked and ran to cover as a set of talons raked at his neck. He couldn't stay here, he had to get out. What he really needed was someone else to get attacked instead of him, someone taller and bigger.

He looked back at where he'd emerged from the hearth.

"Rodney!" he called with every pretence of panic, heading towards the other man.

"We've got to get out of here!"

Rodney got hit too, the beat of wings and scrape of claws less horrifying than an attack from human hands. He shielded his face with his arm, pulling Jan closer because he had called.

"We...we need to get inside," he said. "They're so...how are they so big? Are they...do you think they're defending their nests?"

There was a moment of private delight in the midst of the chaos when Jan was pulled closer to Rodney. There was something undeniably pleasing about someone willing to protect his wellbeing (which was, after all the most important wellbeing there was) and he gladly sheltered next to the other man.

"I think they might not be entirely natural!" he said as he took hold of Rodney's hand and half-dragged him to the exit. He was good at finding exits at least, even in dire situations.

Out in the snow it was harder and Lawr was neither tall nor strong. He eventually resorted to a sort of desperate hop as claws just missed his ducking and weaving form by sheer millimetres.

"NOT my FACE." he hissed at a bird that came far too close, and pulling out the dagger he swung at it, chopping off a small amount of tail feathers.

"A-and the fire. Did...did the goddess say we were in Switzerland?"

He felt Jan pull him, and there was a squawk, and flurry of feathers, and he lost the other man's arm.
