Saber's Story: The earth smelled of fresh rain, the drought had been long but finally the heavens had opened, the plant life breathed and gave the air a beautiful scent. Cesar looked back in to the den he shared with his pack, he had managed to keep his family healthy through the long dry days, giving up the lions share of any food caught to keep the young and old fit to see this day. The day when the herds would return.
His ears twitched as the rainfall was suddenly muted by the sound of thunder and the stampede of creatures cascading on to the plains below. He felt a brush against his leg and looked down to find one of the prides cubs cowering between his legs, a chuckle rose on his lips. "Don't hide little one. The clouds shouting is the skies way of telling the world to waken. Look, look down there and marvel at the miracle of life, soon the rivers will run clear and the young of the herds will emerge and no belly will go hungry again."
He heard the giggle of the child between his paws and a little whisper of amusement from the cub. He knew they all chuckled when he got so poetic, his beliefs had always been strange to the pride but they had accepted him and his unusual ways. The smiles and the laughter in their eyes, when he waxed lyrical, it had all been so important during the long stomach growling days. He had told them tales of what was to come, weaved words of the green grasses and shaded trees who's canopies would turn from fluffy pink, white and yellow clouds to deep shades of dappled green. The perfect place to sleep off a meal with the whole family.
"You know, before I came here, before I became your leader I was a lone cat, happy to slum about the world, but now, there is no greater joy in my life than all of you." Taking a deep breath the massive male smiled whimsically. "I only came to you all to fill my belly and to gain a modicum of protection while my foot healed. Akim though, he saw, something in me, convinced me to stay. I'm so glad he did." He chuckles, it really had been a life time ago, he had become Akim's successor and he had promised the old male to protect the pride to his last breath. They were the only family he had ever truly known, he could ask for no greater gift.
Pulling himself from the past he lowered his head and nudged the youngster from under his belly "Come, enjoy the feeling of the rain on your flanks, feel the world breathing a sigh of relief for tomorrow the rain will stop and our hunt will begin." Bending in a crouched position he smiles mischievously wriggling his hind quarters like a huge ungainly cub.
The child breaks in to laughter and leaps away chased by the older most dominant male of the pack, the true leader of the pride. The pair taking every moment of joy they could from the fresh spring rains that dappled their coats and brought joy and life to their little corner of paradise.
