Phantoms of the Past

There was so much hesitation before Jamie replied that guessing he fell back to sleep wouldn't have been a bad choice. Still, it came eventually, and it was just as messy with errors as the others had been. It was so hard to type when his hands were shaking this bad.

TEXT TO SHILOH
i jus hsd a dream

It wasn't a lie, but it was definitely a half-truth. Jamie's resolve was quickly fading, though, and he gave into his weakness despite feeling like s**t for disturbing Shiloh.

"That's fine." he said with a nod, "But uh, I dunno what I'm doin' really. Sorry in advance for when I ******** it up."

It was mostly a joke. How badly could he ******** this up anyway? Besides, Jamie wouldn't let him.

"Think you'll do another.... wait," he paused, realization dawning on him, "What kind of a fish was Glubs, anyway?"

Phantoms of the Past

"Had a dream..." his words were slurry with sleep, calloused hand reaching up to rub at his eyes. Did Jamie have a nightmare? He felt a little bad; it wasn't like his friend had been getting good sleep lately. To finally fall asleep, only to be shoved back awake like that...

The next text was a confirmation, if anything. Fine by Shiloh, because he honestly hated texting, or at least preferred his voice.

His finger hit the call button.

"That's okay... there's nothing to really, um, ******** up." Jamie was quick to assure him of that much, because honestly, there wasn't. Digging into the shelving under the tank, he pulled out a rolled up hose, one that looked pretty damn long. "We just gotta hook this up to the sink and start the water. D'you wanna... hold it in the tank so it doesn't fall out?"

Now he was pulling out a pH kit. "Oh, um, she was a goldfish. A telescope one."

Phantoms of the Past

Shivering like he was, it was hard to hit accept. Or maybe that was just his excuse. Jamie took a long moment to answer, but eventually he did, staring down at his phone a little too long before putting to his ear. "Um... h-hello...?" he muttered, sounding pathetic and shaky. Opening his mouth made him feel like sobbing all over again.

"See, there you go. We get another goldfish." he accept the hose without word, pleased that this was all falling into place so quickly.

"D'you think maybe, uh..." he paused, looking a little bashful, "After we pick her out, I could draw her maybe?"

Shiloh was patient, though it was hard to deny the fact that his eyes were slipping shut again by the time Jamie actually spoke. He was tired.

"Hey." his voice drawled, sleep drunk and soft. "What's botherin' you?"

Glub Glub

"Another goldfish sounds... really nice, actually." They were his favorites, after all. There were so many different types of fish, big and small and cute and fearsome, and they all were special in their own way. Despite all that, the simplest little fish was the one that made his heart swell the most. "Okay, okay, hold this here."

Unwinding the hose, Jamie ran off to hook it up to the bathroom faucet and turn on the water. He wasn't gone long.

"And now we wait..." Watching the tank slowly fill with water, he only looked away when Shiloh asked about drawing the new glubling. "Draw her...?" he questioned, eyes widening. "I didn't know that you, um, liked to draw..."

Phantoms of the Past

"I... had a bad d-dream," he whispered in return, eyes squeezing shut now that he didn't have to write anymore. "I'm... I-I'm sorry for waking you u-up for this." It felt awful, though he'd already been reassured. Jamie in this sort of state was much harder to convince.

"I-It's s-so stupid, I... I'm sorry...."

"Doesn't it?" he agreed wholeheartedly with Jamie, watching as the water level rose... very slowly. Very slowly. Ah well, he didn't have any plans for today.

"And uh, I guess I do... sorta. Yeah. I mean, it's a hobby." he scratched the back of his head with his free hand, "Been doin' it for a while. I never mentioned?" Drawing and music was his life, anyway.

Phantoms of the Past

At this rate, Shiloh was going to get pretty damn good at the whole comfort thing, because damn did Jamie seem to have an unending need for it.

Which wasn't a bad thing, but it really made Shiloh wonder. What the hell could have happened to a guy to make him so insecure? Sure, people were born with insecurities, but to have them fester like this was another thing entirely...

It hurt, actually, hearing Jamie's voice crack. He knew immediately that he'd been crying.

"Hey... it's alright." his voice wasn't trying to be calm, but the gentleness that came with being half-woken was definitely palpable, "Even if it doesn't feel like it, yeah? It will be."

In this state, it was actually pretty easy to be open, calmer...

"You don't gotta' say a damn thing y'know, Jamie. But you know I'm always on the other end when you need it."

Glub Glub

"No, you never did. I definitely would've remembered." That much was true, because Jamie had a budding interest in art, if only to the extent that he'd taken to filling his class notes with way too many doodles. It wasn't like he was good at drawing, but he enjoyed it and he enjoyed a lot of the art he looked at online and wow, his friend liked to draw, and that had Jamie starry-eyed.

"It would be so cool if you drew Glub Glub. I, uh, would really love to see your work..."

Phantoms of the Past

Another extended silence was the answer to Shiloh's assurances as Jamie fought hard against the urge to start sobbing all over again. The comfort was a double-edged sword, one that made him feel less alone, but also made him feel bad for being so needy. Finding a happy medium was proving very difficult.

"I... I know..." he finally choked out, though he didn't sound convinced.

"I, um... I-I dunno if I can t-talk about it n-now.... U-Um.... I-I-I'm sorry if t-this is dumb, b-but... would you... t-talk about... s-stuff? A-Anything..."

Shiloh considered this for a moment, fingers flexing against his palm like he was actually holding a pencil there. "Well," he started after a moment, "I don't... really share my stuff, usually."

It wasn't from a lack of conviction, but rather his naturally secretive nature. He lied about things when it was unnecessary. Showing his art was just another thing he kept hidden for no good reason.

"But if you have um, a pencil or somethin'..." he started, but then trailed off. The motive was probably obvious, though.

Phantoms of the Past

    Ah. This.

Shiloh knew this very well, actually. There were many a night when Oliver would find him in his room, upset or distraught or just plain angry over something or other. It wasn't that he was inconsolable, just difficult to calm. Ollie would always talk to him; sometimes about the situation, or his feelings. Those were good, because Oliver had a steady voice and he knew Shiloh so well that he could talk him through all his irrational thoughts. Other times, he would quietly sit next to him and murmur about the most abstract things. Things like the weather, his music lessons, what he had for lunch that day...

"Once, when I was like.... seven or eight," Shiloh wasn't sure where he was going with this story, but he sure was going alright, "I was on my bike 'n just like, riding around y'know. You can't see my hands movin', but I'm painting a picture here, so try'n visualize for me okay."

"There's a hill; biggest, baddest ******** in town. All the kids are chickenshit before this thing, yeah? Here comes <********' Shiloh, cool guy who thinks he owns the place," there was a bit of silence, because he did own the place, but "I'm like, 'I can do this. I can take this. You guys are ********' wussies."

"So I don't got my helmet or nothin' 'cause ******** that noise. And I'm like, I can't just start down this hill like a ********' kissass on his way to a family picnic, so I get a running start on this b***h. I'm flyin' down this hill as mach ********' speeds Jame, mach ********' speeds."

"And I totally ate s**t, but it was worth it 'cause I was the coolest guy in the cul-de-sac. Like, would you ******** with a goddamn kid if he was screamin' and chargin' at you and his face was split open? Hell nah." ... "Well, like, you wouldn't. I would. Mostly 'cause i'd prolly be that kid."
