Oliver jumped visibly when he felt the gentle touch on his shoulder, Gretchen was way too quiet! He didn't want to admit it, but he might have jumped anyway had she started with the verbal greeting from right next to him.

"Ah, h-hi, sorry," he stammered quietly, this apology for Gretchen alone.

Another pair of comfortable, familiar faces arrived, and slowly the tenseness in Oliver's shoulders began to relax. He even smiled when Horace was fluffed with the towel. The kid didn't know much about the woman, Caroline, but he knew his friend definitely deserved some positive attention for a change. Horace's smile was good to see.

In that tentatively hopeful mood, the antics by Lawr and Melvin only caused another startled jump.

"Um, i-it's okay, I'm not-" Oliver's stomach chose that moment to growl loudly. His cheeks reddened. It hadn't been that long since he had a snack... Or maybe he didn't realize it had been so long since that snack. Either way, his body craved real food for a change.

America's face brightened at the sight of Dawson and though she paused a moment, she did hand over the tongs with small grin. He'd let her have her way last time and this time her heart could better afford handing off the work. "Make mine medium, hun."

It was in it's way, a heartening thing to see Melvin break up Lawr's sleezing. It wasn't entirely expected, after all, and the man was being surprisingly decent about it.

Offering both of the Mels a friendly look, she replied, "Dawson should have the first burgers done up in just a minute. We got fixins in the blue cooler," she flipped open the top and pulled out a small stack of solo cups. "Veggies n'such. Hotdogs too, if you'd rather."

She then began The Ritual. It involved fixing a number of plastic cups into a particular configuration and placing her cellphone within it. After a few moments, upbeat summer music began to sound from the makeshift boombox.

"There we go! Now it's a party."

Honestly, Gretchen had been expecting Oliver to startle, so she simply smiled sweetly as he apologized, waving it away gently. He was a sweetheart, down to the core. "How're ya doin', Oliver?" Just barely she resisted the urge for a little good natured ribbing in the form of asking if he'd knocked any limbs off his sparring partners lately. Considering how upset the event had made him, it probably would have been in bad taste...

A very water logged fellow Death trainee returned from the waves, and if Caroline hadn't of had a towel handy, Gretchen would have offered her's to Horace, but it seemed the redhead had everything under control. Instead she just returned his light wave, chuckling as the woman dotingly dried him off.

She looked up when America asked her about food, and it drew her attention down to the grill and the delicious smell that was wafting up from the cooking meat. "Oh! A hotdog, if you don't mind." When was the last time she'd had one? "Bit crispy, please."

More people were arriving, and Gretchen offered a bright grin and a wave to Dawson. That now made two people she was familiar with at this little shindig. "Hey handsome, doin' alright?"

America handed over control of the grill, slipping away, and a moment later there was music. Not Gretchen's preferred genre, but it was light and upbeat in a way that fit the setting well.

"Thank you both." Melody turned her attention from America to Dawson, smiling at both excitedly in turn. "I'd like medium rare?" Her voice even but soft and dripping with uncertainty. There really were a lot of people and most of them she didn't know. She was spoiled for choice but none seemed all that interested after her attempt at introductions. She turned her attention to Melvin in particular. In that entire scenario he didn't really say much to her. "You're dressed very unusually," she hoped it sounded like a compliment.

She noticed Horace too, it was about time they'd met. He was always sending her so many messages in private, she was just no good at figuring out how those worked so often his attempts went unrequited. "Horace?" she asked uncertainly.

Moving to the cooler, he took the vegetables out. Since they were already washed, all they needed to do was be roasted. "Dawson, is it okay if a corner doesn't have meat placed on it? I want to put these on as well." And meat and veggies touching did not do well for everyone's health.

He heard Oliver's stomach and smiled. "Seems you need to get working quickly." He mentioned to Dawson.

As he turned, he regarded Melody with a confused, raised brow. "Unusual?" He glanced at himself. A pair of professional swimming shorts and a hoodie. It didn't seem all that strange to him. "Really? Is it the hoodie?" It was warm out, but he didn't think it was all that bizarre.

It was nice to hear music, even if it wasn't his tastes. He wondered if he could start a small bon fire, but guessed he'd wait and see if the party actually made it to the evening.

Stormy wiggled her fingers back at Caroline in reply, still a little overwhelmed by the amount of people congregated in the one area but at least happy to see the woman perk up. She was going to greet Harvard in kind, but the statement about the cake caught her off guard. All this time, Stormy had just assumed the pair had either made the cake themselves or taken it from the cafeteria.

"Oh. Um, thank you." She bowed her head to Horace after she got over her surprise. "It was very tasty."

Without warning she started to vigorously scratch at her long sleeves. When the small fit was over, she looked to Harvard and Caroline with an awkward now what? in her eyes. They were the ones who had wanted her to come after all, and she wasn't peckish yet.

"Medium meat, crispy 'dog, pink cow, veggie corner, n' somethin' fer Mr. Shy Guy," Dawson listed off jovially. "Ya want somethin' too, Sunday School? Pink?" he added when there was no response.

"Me? Oh, um, I'll just nibble off someone else..."

He chuckled. That's what they always said right before they came back for a real for themselves. But he flipped what was left and tapped his foot to the beat as America put on some music. It didn't take very long, the food had been almost finished before he got there. Sliding each piece onto paper plates, he motioned for their respective owners to go grab the right bun and help themselves to the available fixings.

"Sir Troll," he nodded at Horace, and then to Gretchen, "Sunflower. Whachall been up to?" he asked as he slapped on two patties for himself and Oliver.

Belatedly, over his shoulder he called, "Meri, mind passin' me something from the cooler? Don' matter what, I'm parched. Been busier 'an a one-legged man in an a** kickin' contest."

Gretchen's smile brightened at the nickname, and she brought her shoulders up in a rolling shrug. "Same old, you know." She'd been busy, sure, but doing the usual things they all did throughout their days on the island. "Lots of trainin', lots of sparrin' 'n missions."

She might have expanded on that, but anything else she might have been about to say was cut off abruptly at Dawson's one-legged comment. "As if kickin' butt with one leg is hard?" At least she didn't seem to have taken offense to it. On the contrary, the trainee was smiling as she looked up at him.

Maybe it was a challenge.
