"That is weird." Micah's shoulders stiffened a little. "She dumped me. She said I wasn't paying enough attention to her. I had work," he explained, grumpily. "It's ... not that important to me," he said, leaving the uncomfortable topic of sleeping around alone now that it had been established. He didn't really want to talk about it. He stared at the screen. "I mean, most've my family is gone or didn't care enough to send even letters, so whatever, it doesn't matter. If they don't care I don't care." Nova shifted in his mind, the feel of her becoming somehow concerned. Don't even say it, he warned. Say what? I no say thing.Yeah, okay. Good.

"Well," he said, not delving too far into Micah's past relationships even though he wanted to. "Since we're all on the island doing the same work, maybe it'll be easier if you snag someone on island." Hunters came to understand about long missions away and ones were they ween't sure a lover would come back, he thought. It was harrowing but understandable. He made a face. "Hah, I wished it worked like that - 'if you don't care then I don't care'. Would make things easier and if you can actually do that, teach me your secrets." Horace suddenly grinned. "I would be your most loyal student, professor."

Micah blinked, looking a little like a deer in the headlights; apparently it hadn't really occurred to him that there were dating options where he lived now. Or maybe work had been a good, convenient excuse to avoid not thinking about other reasons he and his ex might not have worked. "Uh," he said. "Maybe so." He rustled a hand around in the chip bag, poking at it to see if anything was left. It was not. "It's, uh. I don't care about them, I don't even know them," he protested. "I mean maybe if I did and they didn't care then I'd mind but uh."

"Don't give me that look. Everybody dates on the island; go get yourself a girl! Or a dude, because why not." Okay, so perhaps Horace would never be quite done with the pokes at sexuality. After a moment of watching Micah find out his bag was unfortunately empty (the bane of movies snacks was, of course, that no one ever noticed they were eating them until they were gone), he proffered up his own bag. It still had about a third of the chips there. Abruptly, Horace realized he had no idea where they were in the movie. This realization made his roll his shoulders awkwardly and decide he didn't care. "Yeah, but you knew they existed - isn't that enough? I wish I had a huge family sometimes."

Micah made a wordless grumbly noise about the latter part of the comment. "I don't know, if I find a nice girl," he muttered, and accepted the bag of chips. He liked to snack; if his life hadn't been active, it was rather likely that there would be a bit of soft pudge around his middle. But he'd always done enough work and moved around enough to counteract the inevitable gain, and a month of strictly rationed portions and hard work had burned off the small amount he'd gathered before the island. "I don't know them and they don't care," he repeated crankily. "Dad was gonna remarry, so I guess I was gonna have more family." He didn't sound entirely happy about that. "But then the outbreak happened before the wedding was scheduled."

The grumbles were amusing, as always. "There's nice people all around the island, I think. If you want, I can... try to introduce you to some?" Horace mentally ran a list in his head of girls who were both single and nice. The list would have been much, much, much longer if he had included nice guys. Somehow, finding Micah a girl didn't particularly appeal to him, but he liked romance, even still, and so we would try. If Micah wanted it. "Well, you can always take the mentality of a family made of friends, if you'd rather. I have a sister here because of that. It's better." He debated touching on the next subject, aware it was sensitive. "It sucks they don't let you know about your family after you leave, you know."

"I dunno." Micah focused his attention on the chips, scowling to cover a confusing spike of embarrassment. He didn't really want to be introduced to people with an ulterior motive to the introductions. "I think I want to get settled in better, know the ropes more, like, not looking now or anything." "Yeah ...." He didn't look at Horace. "I think my dad might be gone," he mumbled, and stared at the screen, watching Slimer go rocketing around. "Didn't hear anything from him after the outbreak started, didn't hear from anyone who'd seen him."

"Yeah, meeting someone right off the bat might not be good until you're better acquainted with your job. It'd be easier finding someone to hook up with than date, but I know you're uninterested." Horace shrugged. "But if you just want to meet people to meet, I can introduce you to some, too. A good meet-and-greet is a meet-and-beat." He smiled a his own shitty joke. Horace, at least, had never really gone through the same thing Micah had, He was reasonably sure that his grandmother as still alive and kicking and watching soap operas except on Sunday mornings. "You could try to ask someone higher up, but I don't know that they would tell you. I was only at the outbreak at the end - with the vines and s**t."

"Sparring, you mean?" Micah was quietly relieved that Horace was dropping the idea of trying to introduce him to girls easily enough. "I guess I gotta get better at fighting anyway. I mean we gotta get better at it, fine, Nova." An eyeroll. "I dunno. If he went infected, I don't want to know anyway, I think." Micah rubbed his palm on the fabric of his jeans, the corners of his mouth pulling down. "It's a shitty way to go. Wait, vines?" He gave Horace a confused look. "Some other guy was saying something about me surviving the vines, but I don't remember vines."

"Yeah, sparring. The possible other kind of beatin' isn't a first meeting kind of thing." He laughed at Micah's mention of Nova. It seemed she was quite strident. "Well, you know I'm always up for sparring. Kinda like losing, though I haven't lost in a bit." Huh, Horace had never thought of not knowing as a better option than knowing. He always wanted to know everything, to know everyone. (Micah already had a page in Horace's binder.) "Vines. Big green things, trying to like... subsume you. Or at least they tried to get all of us hunters. Some of you guys got carried out of them, too."

"Like losing?" Micah gave Horace a slightly strange look. "What, are you a masochist or something?" "I don't remember that at all," he said blankly. "There was the outbreak and the infected, and we were in the Apartments, and I know there were some other guys out in other locations, but ... I don't really ... know how I got here." The realization was disturbing.

Horace flushed, completely. "U-uh." He spluttered. People had said that, but never to his face. "I... uh, m-mean that, like, you... can learn from losing. Like... what went wrong. And maybe it's... like agoodpain, like over-exercising." The words were a little rushed and Horace busied himself not looking at Micah for a bit. At his words about not remembering, Horace looked up and frowned. "Well, uh, what was the last day you remember? There were definitely vines and like.. there's a missing spot of memory for me - something about more vines and people in vines, I dunno. But I woke up okay."

Micah blinked as Horace got suddenly embarrassed and flustered, and felt himself slowly turning red. He'd apparently hit on something. He was going to try and forget that as soon as possible. Nova cackled in his head, nearly hysterical with her hilarity. New subject. New subject. "The, uh, the fifteenth? I think.Of September. Maybe the sixteenth. I kinda lost track of time in there after things quit being normal, you know?" He shook his head, repeated, "I don't remember vines."

Horace was incredibly glad Micah dropped it all. He focused on the other parts - about the infection. "Huh. We didn't pick up anyone until October, really. I didn't end up pulling anyone out, personally, so I don't know if some got pulled more quickly." This was the first he'd heard of a discrepancy. To be fair, the people they had dealt with were all unconscious. Not a normal unconscious state, either, but also not a state lasting two weeks. "It was creation vines, so who knows what they did."

"That's ... weird." Micah stared at Horace. "I don't know. I don't remember being picked up. I should remember that, shouldn't I? What the hell are creation vines?" The phrase tickled something in the back of his mind, making him feel like he should know this. But he didn't. He frowned.
