sad In all honesty Alifax wasn't really sure what he was doing at this festival. He was a little reluctant to spend his time doing much of anything here - a lot of these activities cost beetles, and while he no longer lived in a constant state of poverty, Alifax had always been pretty miserly with his money. Also, he had it on good authority (and his base instinct of skepticism) that most of these games were rigged.
He certainly wasn't approaching this mushroom hunt thing with any expectation of taking home the jackpot. He and Sarcel had already done that, at Awassi's house. (And he didn't really want trolls to stare at his photograph or anything weird like that.) Instead he was going to head over to this hut thing and make the most out of the beetle reward he'd been supplied with. Unfortunately for him it looked like most of the inventory consisted of yarn and potato sacks, which were both practically worthless. And he really didn't need more of those furbeast things: the fur to meat ratio was really high. Skinning them was kind of a bother. He hesitated over the knife, skimmed his eyes straight over the books (they certainly didn't look like they'd be of any interest for
Alifax, who was not a city-dweller by any means) and pulled out a fishing rod. Hey - this thing could actually be pretty useful. He'd need to finagle fishing lessons out of someone, but fish were a delicacy, right? It was seadweller food, and if seadwellers hated anything it was doing work to get something that should come naturally to them, or whatever.
He took the thing hastily, stashing it into his bag (okay, he'd kept the one from the party) where it stuck out like a giant mechanical flagpole. Which it basically was. Then his eyes lit on the dynamite, and he had to admit he wasn't the most careful in his rush to get to
that. Who cared about its utility in mushroom hunting? This stuff meant a bigger fire with far less effort. That was always a great thing in his book. Plus, this kind of stuff was
expensive. He wasn't going to squander the very real fortune he'd lifted from Awassi's house on dynamite, but his free game money? Sure. "
Sorry," he mumbled, to whomever he'd just brushed by. Wait - hey. "
Wait - Sarcel!" He could see that his relief at seeing a familiar face was mirrored on hers. "
I'll - let's catch up when we've both paid," he said, nodding.
Then he took a pair of night vision goggles, glanced over the rest of the stock, scoffed, and exited with a hundred beetles still jingling in his pocket. He could keep
these. He and Sarcel met outside the small purchasing area and he nodded another greeting to her. They fell into a quick discussion - it was determined that they'd head into the forest, and after a few minutes there they'd already decided they didn't need to dally. "
Yeah - " Alifax said, nodding. "
If everyone spends time wandering now, we can head quickly deeper into the forest where no one will have been hunting yet." They'd start off slower, maybe, but they'd have a huge head start when everyone else wanted to catch up.
As they walked, Alifax slid the night vision goggles on, just to see whether they worked. Also, well - he
was in a forest, which meant that the moons' light, luminous as it was, wasn't going to be very helpful. And neither of them had night vision abilities. Well - Alifax could light a fire, maybe, but they were also
in a forest. One of the first things Alifax had learned about trees was that they burned.
