Jack actually jumped a little at the slap before sputtering a half-laugh; he was never going to get used to those.
"As you wish," he said to the full extent of said dramatic accusation, even bowing a little before leading the way. The next room was as confusing and distorted as ever, but he tried to follow his instincts. "Should be...this way..."

The same ladder as before. As least it was in tact.

Before he could even check back to see if Chel had gotten lost in the mirror hall again, something cold and sharp blindsided him. Before he knew it, he was forced to pendant out lest he get dragged somewhere, barely conscious.

This time Chel got to wait over his body while he resumed consciousness. The techs assured her that he had just knocked out from a slight head trauma and would wake up in a bit; she had nothing else to do except wait until he did.
When he did come to she had a bored grin, finally putting her phone away. "Hey sleepin' beauty. You feelin' alright?"

When he woke up, he became quickly annoyed that he had actually been laid down--like he needed to recover from that attack.
"Yeah," Jack grumbled as he sat up and rubbed his head. "Something blindsided me right before I hit the staircase." He almost asked if she had made it up there, but something told him she hadn't.
After getting to his feet, he stretched his arms behind his head and popped a few joins. "Third time's the charm, hopefully."

"Yeah ..." she responded, clearly worried by the fast recovery-and-departure, but saying nothing. Jack could take care of himself and so could she. It didn't make her feel less concerned, but it did get her butt through the portal.
The cave was starting to feel less silly and more insulting. Chel had to fix that. "We should make pizza tonight," she said in the odd silence, waiting for the revenant. "Watch a movie. When's the last time we were in the same room for more than sleepin'?"

The very idea of pizza made his stomach growl; their breakfast burritos hadn't lasted long after all.
"Final Lord of the Rings movie?" he suggested as they picked their way through unaccosted.

"Nah too long," she said, maybe a half-beat too quickly. "Somethin' cheap and dirty like a kid's movie or some s**t."
She followed the path, wary of the mirrors now and instead walking straight ahead without looking. She even debated putting her goggles on. Either way she made it.
"Jack?" she called back. "I found it over here." She wouldn't go forward just yet.

Nodding, Jack followed after closely, keeping his gaze straight ahead as well. This time at least, they weren't going to get separated.
"Watch your step on that staircase," he warned. "I don't know what's guarding it, but it's got nasty hands."

Chel had made it up a few of the steps when a pair of hands erupted from a mirror beside the stairs. They wrapped themselves around her framed and pulled her through the mirror, sealing the other side (where Jack was) shut.
Once through, all was quiet, but all was also dark and impenetrable. No ceiling, no doors, no openings. Just the mirror that let them see a small rectangular image of the other side.
"Jack?" Her first move was to bang on the glass; from his end it would sound completely mute; no way to communicate between them. "Get me out of here, smash it or some s**t-" She tried pushing through it but the hands didn't come. When it was apparent there was no other way, her boot came up in a roundhouse kick and broke the mirror from both sides.
Trapped.
Glumly, Chel knew it meant she had to pendant out. Again.

"God damn it—"
He all but pressed against the glass a second after it had engulfed Chel, fingers flat against the glass surface as if he might somehow find a secret or some broken part of an illusion. She was yelling something at him, but not a peep made it past their sudden divider. Attack the mirror itself? But he could hurt Chel if he tried. Same with breaking it. What if he just broke it off from the ground and carried it, or—
Then he saw the bottom of Chel's boot, and it all shattered. After a sharp intake of breath, he hissed, "******** sake, don't you dare..." It was much too late for that, even if she could have heard him. Scowling, Jack ran a hand through his hair. Would waiting be a good idea here? What if there were more of those captors crawling about?
Pendant, he reminded himself, and then he broke into a pipe as he ate the distance up with long strides.

Unfortunately, he wasn't able to find the correct shard before he was forced to pendant out.
