She flushed, but it was too dark to see it, and just let the confusion go by without complaint. The next firework was getting set up, and Maebe was steeling herself to watch this one with a little more decorum. All of that squealing and jumping around just wasn't her thing, and she didn't want Dawson getting used to it. She had a reputation to uphold.
She didn't think the position of the firework was tilted, until she heard him screaming and saw the flash of light shooting in their direction. She twirled to the side, rolling until she hit the ground and splashed into the shallow inch of ocean water beside them. She sat up and checked for singes, before looking up to make sure Dawson was okay.
Before she could ask him, a small wave slammed right into her back, leaving her open mouthed, speechless, and soaked with the cold hit.

Dawson's instinct had been different. In a mix of old habit and new habit, he hit the ground with a yelp and summoned his shield for protection, kicking up sand in his wake. The firework would have gone just above him, but the weapon was just large enough that it nicked the top of it, causing it to turn over midair and spray Dawson with sparks as its course abruptly changed back towards the water. It soared past Maebe shakily and seemed to spin itself before it erupted into a burst of red light that briefly lit up the waves.
He managed to peek over his shield in time to see the display, wide eyed and stunned from the near hit still. And then he saw Maebe get slapped by a wave, and all of a sudden Dawson was flat on the ground, weapon gone and booming with laughter.

She'd missed the display, because it was behind her, but she hadn't missed Dawson's display. She crawled over towards him, reached down to hook her hands under his arms, and started to try and drag him back towards the water.
"Thought that was funny, huh?" She huffed out, as she managed to move him - an inch.

"Yeah, it was the--yer face! N' the thing ********', like, almost hittin' my face--n' it goes," and Dawson made a pwoooosh sound.
All else was lost to more raucous laughter, thanks to Maebe's attempt to try and actually move him. He neither helped nor tried to stop her.

"Come onnn, get the ******** in there you snarky little.." She pulled, and pulled, and then she hopped over him and started to push. In the end, she was more rolling him to the water's edge than anything, but she only managed to get him to the very edge before she collapsed on top of him, breathing heavily.
The water barely brushed against him there. She could do no more.
Except laugh. Now, she could laugh. It was breathless, and weak, but his was infectious, and she couldn't help it.

Rolling doubled the guffawing, and he would have been happy to play beached whale cushion for her--had she not been mildly successful.
The moment the water touched him, Dawson was scrambling to get away. Sort of. Half-assed. His legs became their own version of a rocket booster, pushing him away with some effort as sand filled the space between his back and his shirt.
Rolling would have been better, but that would have upset his passenger.
Legs flopping, he made a beep beep sound like they had just parked the car and snickered at himself, out of breath from all the mirth. "Tha' one any better?" he asked after he caught his breath.

july 4thShe crowed with laughter once she'd caught her breath and he scrambled away from the rolling tide. It was enough to roll her right off of him, and she slapped down into the sand, taking half of the beach up with her when she tried to get back up again. It was probably better to just stay where she was. "That's. Hard to say." She giggled out. "I was too busy fearing for my life to enjoy it." The tide snuck it's icy fingers delicately against her side, and she cringed away when she felt it. "Uuuuuugh."

july 4thHe forced himself to sit up and began the harrying process of getting the sand out of his shirt, occasionally spitting some out when it came too close to his mouth. He probably should have helped Maebe. Probably. "Yeah, my bad," Dawson said with a wince. "Thought I had it set down." And then, more slyly, "Guess you could say we had a blast, though."

One could almost say worth it, but sand really sucked once it got on your face.
He wrestled out from under her grip, sputtering and shaking his head like a dog before wiping his hand down his face. "It was a good set up!" Dawson protested. "Couldn' jus' ignore it!"

july 4thHer hand reached out, threatening to dip him another time, but instead she just patted his sandy cheek, and gave him a smile. "Whatever you say, dear. Whatever you say." She rolled to get up - rubbing her wet clothes all over him obnoxiously in the process - and then began the long process of slapping sand off of her body. "Do I get to see one of those without being shot at, or is this the end of my Fourth of July celebrations?"

He flinched in preparation for another slam dunk that never happened and looked quite sheepish in return--well, right up until she started trying to get his clothes wet, which elicited indignant little grunts as he crawled away and got to his feet again.
"I got one more fer ya, yeah." He smoothed out his shirt and made a face as he felt sand cling to him no matter how much he tried to shake it out. At least it'd be easier to with the loose fashion he'd picked today.
Hobbling back to their spot, Dawson grabbed the last firework and offered both it and the lighter to her with an expectant smile.

july 4thHer hand stilled at her knee when the lighter was handed to her, along with the firework. She took the lighter, but her hands looked hesitant to take the firework as well. "I don't know how to. Like. Not keep it from shooting us in the face. Are you sure about this?"

"'Course! Here." He lumbered to the shoreline and shoveled up a fistful of wet sand before sticking the firework down. He lined it with several layers of the stuff until Dawson was sure it was, if not sturdy, at least manageable. The wind wouldn't knock it down, and it was out of reach of the waves for now.
Making sure the fuse was up and away from the makeshift foundation, he made a tada! motion and then quickly stepped away.

She watched, but was internally grateful that he'd taken care of the placement, even if it was nice to be trusted. Once he presented it to her, she flicked on the lighter, and bent down to stare at the tiny fuse.
"So, what, do I just hold it to the OH GOD-"
The fuse lit faster than she'd expected, and she stumbled, scrambling around to run away with a screech. She looped him and then jumped on his back, scared to watch it without him as her personal shield.
