Shadow finally decided to break the impasse. She feinted forward, and the mewtwo fell for it; however, Shadow surprised Ems with a Shadow Ball attack. The mewtwo was knocked out of the sky by the force of the blow, and hit the ground only a few feet away from Walpurgis and Karina. She quickly scrambled back to her feet and scowled at the mew watching silently from above.

As Satori fell, Karina returned both her pokemon, having been defeated by Mephistopheles off-screen. Walpurgis looked over at Ems. "Let's fall back, for now."

Ems turned to Walpurgis; the rage in her eyes was clear. there! I can take her!> She clenched her hands into fists and levitated off the ground, though she did not yet leave Walpurgis's side. Thus far he had not failed to explain things to her satisfaction, and she wanted to know why he wanted to give up.
Zinnia's pokemon fell back, though they watched the black mewtwo warily. Zinnia did not quite dare to believe that Walpurgis and Karina were truly going to give up so easily.

Karina placed her hand on her gun at the mewtwo's outburst. Maybe she was mistaken that Walpurgis had everything under control.
Walpurgis looked at the mewtwo calmly, returning Satori and Gangrel. "You might, but can you take all of the other pokemon, as well? The dusknoir, any other pokemon they might have with them - I haven't seen Zinnia's gengar, so she's probably holding her in reserve - and the girl with Zinnia works at a gym, so I know she probably has more, as well. At this point, you're the only one left who can stand a chance, but I won't risk harm falling upon my teammates. Unless you have any other objections, we're leaving, Ems."

M2-SV1 did not growl or hiss like Zebo would have; instead, she projected a telepathic, almost robotic scream of frustration consisting of static and a high-pitched keen. It lasted only a second or two before she relented and appeared to return to a calmer state. she said tersely. She turned back to the mew.
Shadow did not deign to reply. Zinnia watched and waited with bated breath.

Walpurgis and Karina both flinched at the psychic scream. Recovering first, Walpurgis glanced at the mewtwo. "Can you return us to base?" Karina recovered shortly after, and dropped her hand from her gun before eyeing Lenore and Zinnia warily. They were strong, there was no doubt about that.
Lenore looked up as Mephistopheles drifted behind her. He seemed tired, but still ready to fight at a moment's notice.

Ems nodded silently. In a flash of purple light, they vanished.
Zinnia was silent for what felt like an eternity. "Are... are they gone?" she asked Shadow Mew.
the legendary replied. Zinnia heaved a huge sigh of relief. Her knees trembled, and she sank to the ground. Zyk and Zebo hurried to her side to comfort her, and she rested a hand on each of their heads. Shadow was still staring at the spot where her clone and the Rockets had vanished, lost in thought.
Zinnia reached into her bag and pulled out Zach's pokeball. "It's safe now," she whispered, and the ralts reappeared. Eyes huge, he scanned the area, and once he saw that it was indeed safe, he threw himself into Zinnia's lap and trembled.
The teenager turned wearily to Lenore and Mephistopheles. "I guess... I guess I owe you an explanation."

Lenore shrugged. "I'm curious, but you don't really owe me anything."
Mephistopheles sighed and spoke to Lenore telepathically. "Lenore, I think you should hear out the explanation. This wasn't a chance encounter."
Lenore turned to face the dusknoir, her face blank. "I know it wasn't, Mef. But if she doesn't want to tell us, I don't want to make her. That's not what friends are supposed to do, right?"
Mephistopheles knew there would be no reasoning with Lenore, so he kept silent. The girl knelt down, placing a hand on the ground before sitting next to Zin.

Zinnia shook her head. "No, I do need to tell you. Friends shouldn't keep secrets from one another, I'm... I'm sorry I did. I was afraid that you... wouldn't like me anymore, if you found out." She looked away, wrapping her arms around Zach as she pondered how to phrase what she was about to say next.
The ralts could feel the weight of Zinnia's emotions. He snuggled into her and sent some emotions of warmth and encouragement through his telepathic link to cheer her up.
Zach's thoughts and the presence of her pokemon gave Zinnia the strength she needed to face the risk of losing Lenore. She turned and looked at her best friend in the eye so there could be no doubt to her honesty. "I used to be a member of Team Rocket."
Zinnia exhaled as if a huge weight had been lifted off her chest. She hadn't realized how difficult it had been for her to keep that secret from Lenore. However her friend would take it, it felt good to finally let it out in the open. "I joined when I was twelve years old," she continued, "And quit after about two years. I met Shadow while I was with them; I think she's the only reason they didn't kick me out... They thought that they could get her through me. But... I was oblivious to the true nature of Team Rocket, until they ordered me to steal some pokemon from the pokemon center. I couldn't do it, though. I ran away and hid in the wilderness. Walpurgis kept coming after me, trying to steal Shadow, but we always escaped... Until I thought that Team Rocket had given up on me, and dropped the orders to capture Shadow... Once, when Zyk got really sick, I bumped into Walpurgis again-- that's also the first time I saw the woman that was with him today-- and... Well, he helped Zyk get better. I was sure he was a good guy then, but after today..." Zinnia blinked back sudden tears and sniffled loudly. "Th-they're after me again, and I'm so sorry that I dragged you into this mess with me."

Lenore blinked at the revelation that Zin was a member of Team Rocket. While Dr. Lothar's - no, Walpurgis' words had hinted at that much, it was different to hear it from the girl herself. Growing up in Orre, Lenore hadn't had any experience with Team Rocket, but since coming to Zatao, she had at least heard stories about the group. Thieves and murderers, they said.
Lenore looked down, remembering that she was both those things. While she had never stolen pokemon, she was still a thief, and that man in Orre... Realizing she should say something, Lenore looked at her friend. "I don't mind. That you were a member of Team Rocket, or that you kept it from me. I've kept stuff from you, too. I didn't know how to bring it up, or even if I should. It happened before we ever met, and it's in the past now, I think. But if Team Rocket is still after you, maybe I'm wrong, too. I.... mentioned earlier, that I was a killer? That's not a bluff or anything; not really. I really did kill someone, once."
She swallowed and looked at Mephistopheles. "Mef and I, we... The other people in town hated us." She didn't explain why. "One day they just... tried to kill Mef. They were burning him and I... I didn't think about it, I just, I pushed the man in charge into the fire and pulled Mef out and ran. We ran for a long time, and eventually came here, where no one knew us, or what we did. What I did." She turned back to Zin. "But now you know. You're, uh, the only one I've ever told."

Zin gaped at her best friend, eyes wide. She had felt a lot of guilt over joining the evil Team Rocket, though she had been oblivious to their true nature for most of her membership, but that mistake paled compared to the sin that Lenore had committed. For a moment, Zin was afraid of Lenore and what the girl was capable of. Then she remembered that this was Lenore. How could she think of her friend that way?
"I'm so sorry," she whispered. She set Zach down and got on her knees so that she could lean forward and wrap Lenore in a long, tight embrace. "I'm so sorry that you had to go through that."

Lenore watched as Zin stared at her before wrapping her in a hug. The fourteen year old girl's mouth moved for words, but none came. As if confused about what she was looking for, tears came, instead. As one dripped down her cheek, the girl reached a hand up and touched it, wondering why she was crying.
Finally, "It's not your fault." She said to Zin. Indeed, Zin wasn't there in Orre, but she felt like if Zin was there, she wouldn't have been a killer. But it didn't matter now. She couldn't change the past. But if the past lead her here, then, at least for now, it was okay.
