not my night
He grimaced and it leaked into his voice. "Sawry." He crinkled the bag of chips, idle motions to channel his nervousness and guilt. "Just thought you wanted space t'breathe after all that n' stuff. Plus y'looked kinda sick've seein' me around, so..." Dawson didn't bother trying to make excuses about work taking over because it didn't really matter in the end.
It wouldn't be Dawson if he didn't try to stick a joke in, though. "Course, uh, I look damn stupid without a beard, so I don' blame ya."

Orange Mocha FrappucinoShe's already opened her mouth to throw a sassy come back about how did she look like she felt, when he clarified. Her mouth snapped shut, and she fell silent. She continued the silence for far, far too long. "I'm fine." She lied, her head turning away from where he was. "Why?"

every way but forwardFor once in her life Cami hated the popular girl. Not because Maebe was beautiful, or charismatic, or perfect in all her imperfection. It was because visiting her without an audience was damn near ******** impossible. So she'd set an alarm for 3am to wake up and go check on her injured (former?) love. What issues they were having in their relationship otherwise Cami would always be there for Maebe. Hating the sight and smell of the infirmary was just something that came with being a Hunter. Trying to block them out the dark-haired Sun archer slid into the chair next to the bed, lightly taking a pale hand into her own. She couldn't tell whether or not the blonde was asleep or awake, if she even knew that Cami was there, but that was alright. Cami knew.

not my night"I wasn't sick." Maebe grumbled out unhappily. "It's complicated. Long talk, remember?" But like hell was she going to get into all of that now. Not until she knew she was still whole. Not until she could see his face. "What chips are you eating.." She muttered, as an easy topic change to keep the heartache away. "You don't look stupid without a beard. You look better with a beard. There's a difference. That's just my opinion. And of course, my opinion is all that matters."

every way but forwardIt really was impossible to tell if she was awake, but they tended to give her the good stuff that late at night, so she was asleep when Cami's hand reached out to take hers. She shifted, just slightly, as the touch began to slowly awaken her. Her fingers crinkled around Cami's, clutching it affectionately. But then she started to fully wake up, and realize someone was holding her hand. Someone soft, and warm, and gentle. She had nothing to be afraid of. "Who's there?" Maebe's sleepy, scratchy voice muttered out.

She couldn't see, but he still moved his cap. "Hell, yer right. Sawry, yer grace, I'll try t'grow it back fast s'I can." Bossy was a good sign. He stuck to that and circumvented the anxiety-waking reminder about the future.
Pulling up a chair, Dawson pulled the bag open and placed it under Maebe's nose, letting her sniff it out for herself: cool ranch. "Call it an apology gift," he said sheepishly. "Remember a while back how ya said I had ta promise not ta shave my chest? Well, uh...Beard's not the only thing wacko me took the razor to..."

every way but forwardMisery and happiness mingled on her face as Maebe's fingers clutched at hers with eager trust, seeking out comfort. When was the last time that had happened? She remembered the night that she'd exploited the Moon's moment of weakness in her celibacy resolution. It had been all heat, no heart. She'd sort-of expected something like that, had thought it would be okay, but the reality of it was not pleasant. Cami had never been good at going back to only heat when she knew what heart looked like on their faces. So she was grateful that Maebe couldn't see her expression as she let out a soft breath, clucking her tongue as preface to a teasing question. "Who else has skin as nice as mine, Maebe baby? I need to know."

not my nightShe couldn't smell through her nose, but she heard the sound of the chips underneath her and grabbed them with lightning force, crushing them in her hands. She did not cease once she had them - she continued to crush the bag in what looked like a show of violence, destroying the chips until they were all but crumbs. And then she tried to eat them. "Can't open my mouth much," She explained, as she tilted her head back and knocked a few of the crumbs between her lips. She didn't chew them, she just let the mess of delicious cool ranch chip mush in her mouth. It was still good. Just less satisfying of an experience. She crunched the bag again, but this time was out of anger. "Nooooo." She whined, wiping one of her hands on her blanket before reaching out towards him. "You son of a b***h, give it here." She had to feel the loss in order to mourn it fully.

every way but forward"No one," Cami's voice rang through and her smile was instant. "Except this one kid, his name is Mikael. He is like, 10, and he's really creepy." She felt the twinge of guilt at making Cami suffer through seeing her like this. She got all of the bad of being in a relationship, and none of the good. "I'm sorry." She muttered quietly. "This isn't how I wanted you to see me next."

every way but forwardFor just a second eyes narrowed as she digested that she had skin like a creepy ten year old boy who she vaguely remembered as locking himself in a locker and refused to bust his way out. "That just makes me feel like Hannibal Lecter when I talk about eliminating the competition." She whined. "You win this round, Maebe Grace, but I'm working on my next victory." Which would probably never happen but it never hurt to keep trying. Story of her ******** life. The hand not already holding Maebe's came to rest over the other woman's wrist for warmth and reassurance. "You probably didn't want anyone to see you like this. You know I can't not be here, even if for a little while. I need to know you're okay." She'd spent most of the attack on the island curled up in a ball, sobbing and hallucinating. Not something Cami was particularly proud of but there were worse things. She hadn't been set on fire this time. Being set on fire was a hell of a yardstick for personal trauma. Pulling herself back into the moment she went on a bit awkwardly. "You will be okay, right?"

He nodded, forgot she couldn't see, and replied, "Yeah, do what ya gotta, hun." He knew Maebe had taken quite a bit to the face, but the fact that she couldn't see and couldn't chew as well as she should have worried him. Syn had to assure him that her weapon would clear it all up soon enough.
When her hand was cleaned, warm fingers took her by the wrist and guided her to his chest, while his other hand tugged his collar down. "Just lucky wacko me didn' try more shavin' after that," Dawson joked as he gently pressed Maebe's hand to the upper part of his chest. "Hair kept cloggin' the razor. I'd've bawled my eyes out f'I had t'lose my arm n' leg hair on top a'errythin' else." It was regrettable that he couldn't completely avoid her touching the bandage pad just below, but she already knew of her own damage, so maybe it wasn't a surprise; it wasn't like she had to see it at least.

every way but forwardEven if she didn't want Cami to see her like this, it was obvious she was glad that she was here. Maebe was still too sleepy to really appreciate it, but being sleepy around Cami wasn't the worst thing in the world. "Sure, of course. You know me. I bounce right back." She had no idea if she was really okay or not, but what answer did Cami truly expect from her? This was the least she could do. "I've been getting that question a lot. I learned one good thing out of all of this; apparently there are a lot of people worried about my pretty little face. I can't blame them. It's like hearing the Mona Lisa was destroyed. It's a great loss."

not my nightHer hand flattened on his chest, and she felt around angrily, whining at the flat hairless plane of skin. "God. Dawson. You're making it easier and easier for me not to be hopelessly attracted to you anymore. Thanks a lot." She did not sound terribly appreciative. Then her hand touched the rim of his bandage, and she stopped. A second later, her fingers followed the edge of it, until she'd gotten the gist of how large it was from the top edge. She pulled her hand away, and slowly turned until her head faced the opposite direction of him. "How bad is it." She murmured distantly.

He wisely chose not to verbalize an answer to what he wasn't sure was a joke or not; instead, a placating whine for mercy was made.
"It ain' bad," Dawson tried to convince her. "You only had that one bite. I tried tellin' 'em I didn' need me a pad fer that nibble, but y'know--paranoid n' infections n' all that. Only feels worse 'cause ya can' see it."
Peeling her hand away, he let it sit in his palm and pat the top of it with his other hand in reassurance. "Ain' me we gotta worry about here. How ya been feelin'?"

not my nightShe refused to turn, even as he took her hand and placed it back down. "We will worry about you, because I say so. I think you are lying to me, and I want to know the extent of what I did to you, before I drop it." Her head tilted, just slightly back towards him. "I forgave Otto for this. Do you think I won't forgive myself for that just because it's bad?"
