In contrast, though, Ever snorted -- tapping off his cigarette as he took it back and making a joking effort to swipe down the end before he pulled on it as well. He still seemed easy-going, if maybe disappointed Cain had dropped the argument. There was a part of him that quite enjoyed the semantics of it. "You don't have to stick around, just take your book back from Zeke." He flicked a hand in Zeke's direction as he said it, wrist rolling absently. "But you'd be smarter to let us take you home. Or to the infirmary, maybe, if your head's still ringing."

So obnoxious.
"It's not like I haven't tried." He said with a bitter bite to Ever about the books then added, "at any rate the guy who was caught in a library has no business telling me how to be smart. But whatever, just hurry the hell up, I'm not here to spend leisure stroll time with you morons, I want to sleep." He grunted arms folding over his chest before he added pointedly to both of them, "so get a goddamn move on your old asses." Brows furrowed and a tanned hand rubbed at his eye, moving around a contact for a brief flash of bluegrey.

Rolling his eyes, Zeke brought the book back around at an easy-to-reach height for Cain. It was, however, impossible to tell how tightly he was holding it. "And you probably twisted your ankle, what with the limping." To emphasis his point he twitched a finger down to the leg the smaller life was favoring. "Probably want to bind that up to keep from making it any worst." Hazel eyes lifted to Ever for confirmation. Given the fact he was still recovering from a rather nasty sprain, he would be the voice of experience, or reason, or whatever. The 'old' comment didn't seem to bother him much. The smile lingered, his voice stayed light and playful.

"Mmm. It'd probably be faster if you let me carry you." Ever agreed with Zeke absently: watching the young man in a thoughtful sort of way before his eyes flicked back onto Zeke's face. "You never had any sex issues, did you? Self-doubt or questioning, thinking it was gross or unnatural or viewing it as something to be ashamed of." There was genuine curiosity in there, his head cocked to one side. Ever, certainly, had -- but he was over it, now. That was the trick. He took another drag and then offered over the rest of the cigarette into Zeke's care.

"None." They'd touched on this topic before. A conversation revolving around first times, and though Ever had skirted around a real answer Zeke had given one anyways. "It's never been a big deal for me. Not even when I realized I liked men as well." It hadn't been anything he'd really thought of, not until his girlfriends had dragged him to a gay bar and some optimistic kid had kissed him. The remainder of the cigarette was offered over and Zeke took it with a wolfish grin.

Between them he was no match, though he didn't doubt he could take Zeke if alone at least with smarts. A smug sort of look was given as the man held the book out and then motioned to his leg with a finger. That looked dropped however when Ever spoke up as the voice of wisdom, he was right, they both were even if he didn't want to admit it. His leg hurt and Ever could carry him faster, which would get them there and in turn him gone faster.
Half tempted a tanned hand reached for the book as the two men started to talk. Though as the actual conversation hit him Cain paused, flickering between both faces as they spoke. What...what was this. Were they making fun of him again? No. It didn't seem so, but what Ever had said, at least pieces of it struck close to home. And that was made clear by the look that crawled across tanned freckled features. Maybe more so as he surrendered, an arm moving out to swat Ever on the shoulder as Cains face turned down to look at the ground grumbling, "you going to pick me up or what a*****e?"
The remainder of the cigarette was passed between the men by the time he looked up, the bright red end catching his attention. Zeke's grip on his book was likely slack because of the trade he thought but instead of going for the book which he should have Cain grabbed the smoke and muttered, "I'll take that as payment for all the bullshit." Unless of course the other hunters protested, but given the slightly vulnerable puppy face Cain was giving that could be made difficult.

There was just a beat, surprised -- and then, grinning, Ever leaned in to scoop Cain into his arms. This time, at least, it wasn't the fireman's carry, tossed unceremoniously over one shoulder like a sack of grain: instead, it was a gentler princess carry, ducking his head just a bit so that Cain could loop one arm around his neck, Ever's arms under his knees and his armpits. It wasn't comfortable, exactly, but it was probably better. And he could even breathe well enough to smoke. It also didn't stop his conversation with Zeke, though. "Your parents must have been...I don't even know." He shook his head, still smiling, but a bit more quiet, now. Thinking. "Not batshit?" And then he cut his eyes down to Cain, assessing. like maybe he expected the younger hunter's had been.

Ever wasn't the only one surprised as Cain actually relented to being carried. It had brows twitching up, gaze sliding up to Ever for a meaningful look before the smaller Life stole the cigarette right out of his mouth. "Thief." His tone was mild, betraying the narrow-eyed stare he aimed down at the trainee. It didn't matter, not really. Zeke had half a pack in his pocket if he was really hard up for a nicotine fix. Which he wasn't. Grabbing smokes out of Ever's grasp was something of a force of habit by now. He slowed so Ever could scoop the smaller man up into his arms, then resumed his leisurely pace, tucking Cain's book under his arm. "Not the same brand of batshit," she'd clarify, lips twitching in a rueful smile. "My mother is devote. Roman Catholic, remember?" Maybe he didn't It had been a conversation shared on their first meeting, before things had heated up. "She adopted a more passive reaction to any dalliances she deemed a threat to my immortal soul. Nagging, guilt, praying for me." God bless the woman. She had been trying, overbearing, but still obviously cared. Giving a snort, Zeke smiled again. "My dad didn't seem to care one way or another." Considering how very religious his up-bringing had been, Zeke was well aware that he'd gotten off easy on his parent's reactions what had been considered questionable life choices. There was a beat, a flash of a considering look, then Zeke gave a small tip of his head, amending himself. "To be fair, I'm not sure they ever knew I was ******** men. That didn't start until after I left for college, and it wasn't as if I went out of my way to tell them." They had known he'd been a frisky little s**t, though.

Violet eyes stayed on the ground even as he was hoisted up. This was humiliating, to be carried by another man especially one like this guy. But it was worth it, lifted now the rolled ankle dangled relaxed and not throbbing under the pressure of his weight. Sweet relief. "Asshat." Cain gave the somewhat protesting Zeke a mocking look before slowly and deliberately pressing the end of the smoke to his lips and inhaling deeply. It had been awhile since he smoked, not that he actively did so, and the nicotine rush felt good. Hearing the conversation continue Cain tried to drown the men out. The comfort of the smoke escaping past lips coupled with just being overall exhausted making it somewhat ease to do. Violet eyes closed to avoid the look he met from Ever, a clear sign that the batshit parents might have likely been the case. Though in all honesty his parents had been bad people, pressuring yes, a little overbearing as well and crushing of all his dreams that weren't being something amazing like a doctor. But not terrible.
Cain just didn't know what he wanted, what was wrong or why, but it was embarrassing all the same maybe worse since it hadn't been the fear of anything holding him back really. Unless you counted the fear of the unknown.
An exhale and Cain made a smoke ring, taking the last inhale off the smoke before flicking it and letting his head fall to a rest against Ever's chest. Eyes still closed he listened to the voice coming through and the heartbeat of the other man, a surprisingly relaxing combination. Or maybe he was just to exhausted for his own good thanks to hours of research. After a moment the hand that had moved up around Ever's neck when the mans head dipped startled to slack in grip, signalling the trainee was starting to doze.

Cain drifted off, which meant he'd probably only hear snippets of their conversation as they walked -- or, only remember snippets of their conversation. They wandered, because they always wandered, Ever giving Zeke a hard time for giving Cain such a hard time, "Just because I can take it doesn't mean that anyone can," Ever said, and Zeke's reply was a crude, "You don't just take it, you like it," to which Ever couldn't really argue. His feet crunched against grass as they made their way back toward the dorms slow, the conversation shifting once Cain was out of the picture, no longer a gnat that drove them both to their most obnoxious worst. A quiet conversation about rooms, and Cain could pick up the important bits, as Zeke dryly suggested his own was better: "There's no torture equipment in mine, if you're so worried about what he'll think," and so Ever snorted an understanding agreement and hiked Cain a little higher. It meant they'd have to slide past 104 and farther down the hall, the sound of his footsteps shifting from soft crunching to the ringing of soles against the floor. "I can't get the door, Zeke --" But Zeke had it open before Ever could really complain, and maybe Cain would wake up as Ever slid him out of his arms, not quite as gently as he would have liked, and onto Zeke's bed. At least it wasn't too terribly rumpled.

Not rumbled at all, actually. Zeke was he neater of the two of them, his bed was usually made before he left his room. That same attention to detail carried throughout the room, from the desk with it's neat stakes of papers and research materials, to the night stand and it's single red solo cup that served as ashtray, to the dresser. While Ever settled Cain on the bed, Zeke set the book on his desk and went to pull a first aid kit out of his closet. It wasn't something he would have had handy a year ago, but his long run working in the infirmary was having a certain sort of influence on the Mist. He knelt down near Cain's feet, deftly removed his shoes and socks, and then wordlessly set to binding the rolled ankle up quick and efficiently. He was finished with it in minutes, and packing up the remainder of the first aid supplies before he rising to his feet again to put the kit back where he'd gotten it. Once that was done he went for the book, looking it over for the first time before opening it to the first page, curious. It wasn't a library book, it was something hand written. There was a real and immediate urge to read it, and maybe if he'd been alone he would of. Instead he glanced at the inside of the front cover, looking for a name. "Cain Roy," he announced, snapping the book closed again. "That's his name." He'd intended to ask the trainee but that was a little more difficult with him now being asleep. Running his tongue along his teeth, he offered the book to Ever in a subtle means of inquiring what was next on their agenda for the night.

"We've met." He reached out to take the book from Zeke's hand and dropped it onto the bed before grabbing his fingers, instead; drawing the other man in close enough to catch the waist of his pants, instead, and look around the room. There wasn't space enough for three, here -- and besides, he thought that Cain wouldn't be thrilled if they stuck around. "Let's let him be. Nothing for him to steal, really, is there?" He used his grip on Zeke's pants to pull him back toward the door, to drag him out. "My room'll do."
