The scree was always hardest to step over, and this time Yuki actually dismounted to carefully walk in front of his horse to lead them both along in hopes of keeping any slips from happening.
As it turned out, his grip on the reigns was his only saving grace when he nearly fell off the ledge again. He really shouldn't have had a bag of food on him, because he dropped it, but at least he had packed the majority in the saddle bags.QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 28 YOUR HP: 30

Yuki reflected on how it was better to lose food than to fall off of a ledge himself. With or without food. Rabid animals, giant spiders and giant eagles were enough to make him hurt by the time he got back home.QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 24 YOUR HP: 30

While being on the lookout for giant spiders, regular spiders and randomly left behind food... Yuki was betrayed.
His horse had worked out so well until this moment.
He didn't even know what spooked the mare, but she suddenly reared up, dumped him flat on his back and took off down the trail by herself at a dead run.
At least she didn't take the food with her.
But now he had to walk the rest of the way.

Walking through the maze of tunnels in the mountains was even worse when alone. He'd done it before, of course, but it was more depressing than irritating this time.
And then he saw his lost horse up ahead, and he perked up hoping that maybe he could catch her again.
Clearly the horse was excellent at hide and seek, because Yuki lost her in the labyrinth and quite nearly lost his own way as well. It felt like it took days to find his way out again.

As he was nearly to the summit of the mountain, he came across a gangly, tall old man that was sitting on a large stone picking away with his teeth at chicken bones. A cloth sat on his lap, where other bones laid that had practically been sucked clean. Yuki could only assume that the man had to be starving.
"Sir...?" He called, carefully, approaching and reaching for his own bag of supplies. Maybe this man needed more to eat, and he had enough to share at least a few things...
The old man peered at him, pausing. "You shouldn't sneak up on a wizard, dear boy."
"Oh, I wasn't trying to--"
"Ah! What is it you have there? Food, is it?" Yuki didn't even have time to answer. "Splendid! Perhaps we can make a trade. I have eaten all of the meat I packed, sad to say, but I do have some apples. They're alright I suppose, but I've got a bit of a dislike for red fruit. I won't bore you with the details."
Unsure of what to think, but having nothing against fruit of any sort himself, Yuki agreed to the trade and ended up with several of the bright red apples. It was impressive that the old man had found so many. Well, he said he was a wizard, so maybe that had something to do with it.
