Chance stood beneath the stars and stared up at them wordlessly for a good ten minutes in complete and utter silence before he seemed to remember that Claude was there as well - and that, in fact, she had been the one to bring him here in the first place. But somehow the sight of his beloved stars, in spite of him being breathless in wonder, seemed somehow diminished.
You cling to something inanimate because you are afraid that people will disappoint you.
Chance pushed his toes into the sand, his face registering nothing but calmness as he said lightly, "I was totally talking about you when I was in the infirmary the other day."

She was content to stand there in silence, as always. It was Chance's thing. The stars were indeed a beautiful sight, and idly she wished she could get as lost in them as Chance could, but alas, it just wasn't to be. She didn't want to think she looked at them any differently, but maybe she did, in light of that...ah...conversation she had with Chance. Hm. Claude blinked back to attention as she heard Chance's voice, and she turned her gaze away from the sky to him, a brow quirked. She seemed a bit surprised, though it didn't show. "And?"

"And," said Chance, amusement in his eyes as he padded towards Claude, hands still tucked away into his pockets. "There was this girl in the infirmary, her name was Felicia. We were talking about who is and who isn't hot on the island."
There was a pause.
"Guess which one you were on," Chance deadpanned.

She was somewhat amused. Even in an attempt to stay off the radar she still somehow ended up on some radars. Oh well. Felicia wasn't someone she knew, but she still listened with her brow quirked. Claude let out a soft snort of amusement. "Neither." She replied, just to be a nuisance.

He reached out and pushed her shoulder playfully.
"Definitely the not list if you're gonna be a sass about it," Chance deadpanned. "But no, if you really must know, I made sure to tell Felicia just how badass of a woman you are."

She chuckled softly, swaying under the playful shove. "Appreciated...I suppose." She drawled. " How sweet, that you're talking about me." After the tease, she tilted her head a bit as she looked at him, studying him silently for a moment. She then glanced back up at the sky, her brow still quirked. "Is the sky boring here?" She mused, finding the amount of Chance's attention she had to be well...odd.

"Don't let it get to your head," said Chance dryly, kicking sand towards her without much effort behind it. The grains merely bounced off of her bare feet and ankles, as he added in a deadpan voice, "I was merely explaining to a poor young new trainee the warnings about meeting you."
His eyes strayed upwards for a few seconds and then sideways towards Claude, Chance raising his brows.
"The sky is never boring," he said lightly, which didn't really answer the question he knew was unspoken.

"Ah, yes. I might fly towards the stars if my head filled with even more hot air." She deadpanned. " Good." Yes, that's right, keep the new trainees away. "Mn." She kept her lidded gaze on him, and waited.

"I'm surprised you haven't already," Chance said airily, flashing Claude a smirk that clearly indicated he was enjoying their little sass fest. He ran a hand through his messy curls and took a breath, wondering if she was going to press the fact that he was not acting as enthusiastic as normal.
But, in usual Claude fashion, she merely looked at him.
"What?" Chance asked mildly, deliberately making it less easy for her.

She just made a soft amused sound, and just continued to look at him when he was deliberately avoiding answering the unspoken question. He knew. That was cute the way he tried acting like he didn't. She briefly gave him a look that said you know what, before she spoke again, never one to beat around the bush. "Why so lackluster right now?" Of course, she could form a few assumptions right now, but the thing about assumptions was they could be wrong, so it was best to hear it from the source.

The good thing about Claude was that she didn't always need to talk for Chance to understand her. Her face was much more expressive than she thought, and Chance just gave her a little smile, one shoulder rising and falling in a small shrug.
"Maybe I'm just tired," he said mildly, which still wasn't an answer.

" Maybe you're bull-shitting me." She returned, and there was no 'maybe' about it. He definitely was. Claude moved past him, and dropped her heels onto the sand casually. She then turned and gracefully slid to seat herself on the sand, her long legs stretched out in front of her, crossed. She smoothed out her dress over her legs, and waited for an answer to the question.

"Come on now, Claude, you know I don't do that," said Chance mildly, which was true. "I don't make s**t up, that's for people who don't have anything better to do with their lives."
He watched her sit, but didn't join her, taking a few steps this way and that, his eyes scanning the horizon that lay beyond the sand and the water. Truth be told, he didn't want to talk about this with Claude, as she'd already made her view quite clear.
"We've had a nice night," said Chance vaguely. "Let's not ruin it by getting into anything."

"You're bull-shitting me by being vague and avoidant." She watched him step this way and that, quietly, and her assumptions were further solidified by this interaction. Not only did she feel a bit validated, another part of her felt awed. Did what she say to him about the stars bother him? There was something profound in this to her. The thought that Chance, maybe if he didn't realize it, cared enough about what she said to it let affect how he viewed something he all but worshiped... Her silence stretched on for a time as she contemplated this, and she didn't respond right away. "Things aren't always ruined by getting into anything. On the contrary, it could possibly be an even better night after a meaningful and enlightening conversation." Claude leaned back a bit, resting her weight on her hands in the sand. "If you're concerned about this being a repeat, I'll point out that it escalated because of how vague you were." A pause. "Like how you're acting right now." She lapsed into another silence afterwards, and to degree, didn't want him to feel like she was cornering him. Hm. After another moment, Claude shifted and let herself lay back on the sand, her lidded gaze filled with the starry sky above. Her hands shifted to clasp over her rest folded over her stomach, and it was another stretch of silence before she spoke up again. "I taught you some French today." She pointed out and they had a deal. French for stars. Between pointing it out and staring upwards she felt like she didn't need to say much more for Chance to understand, because he did get her like that. kuuropii I'm surprise by the length of this post

He could feel the lighthearted pleasure of the evening begin to shift a little into something a little less satisfactory. Claude's assessment of him was relatively spot on, which made a small bundle of annoyance grow in the pit of Chance's stomach.
It was also more words than she almost ever spoke, which meant it was serious. Something flashed across his face, then quickly dissipated again, Chance shifting his feet as Claude lay back, his eyes darting from her prone form to the sky, then outwards, across the ocean.
"Maybe I just don't want to talk about it," he said, his tone light, in spite of the irritation he felt deep within. "I don't have to talk about it if I don't want to."
A sigh escaped him, because they had had a good evening before this; laid back and relaxed, casual and comfortable, like he usually felt with her. This, however, was not the same. It was foreign territory, something he disliked treading on.
"What do you want to know about the stars?" Chance asked her. "Other than my opinion on them."
