Screw the mud sweet lord why. Eventually Dawson just fell over and gave up. The vines were happy to fling him back, and he eventually crawled his way back to Maebe to lick his wounds and try again later.

New boots, renewed purpose, yet still a little rank with the smell of ancient mud water. Dawson tugged at his cap as they forayed into the portal again.
"F'the water gives us trouble again, swear t'God I might go shirtless like you," he half joked, half mused. There was only so much cleaning he wanted to be doing for this adventure.

Nothing about this situation was good for Maebe's easily irritated mood, or her skin, or her hair, or her general sense of well being. She got quiet when she was irritable, but when he spoke, she gave him a dubious glance. "You're a guy. Why would you worry about going shirtless? I'm surprised it's taken you this long to consider it. If I was a man.. God. If I was a man, I don't think I would wear a shirt like, ever." Suddenly she was daydreaming about how hot of a guy she'd be, and the irritation faded. Stamina: 17

Ah yes, the mud water. Ye of the awful vines and the pretty much living mud. He was treated to the former and scowled as he pushed himself up, squeezing the water from his shirt. "Fuggin'...Gawd."

To be fair, she was acutely aware that her body moved in a distinct strut when she walked, and he did not. Still, she looked suspicious, as if she wasn't quite buying what he was selling. At the very least he'd admitted the shirt was gone if they had to go again, which made Maebe a little less angry when the living slime began to tug and pull her down again in the water. She fought against it and backed off, but no cursing or screaming escaped her this time. Did she want to fail? Maybe only to prove a point. Stamina: 14

It was clear that they'd entered a time of true focus, when both Dawson and Maebe went quiet, and started to buckle down. Over and over, the vines and muck got them. Over and over, they dove back in, regardless.

To be fair, she was better at retrying when the vines threw her, than when the muck got to her - there was bad, and there was worse. She would take the bad without complaint.
