He started a little at her voice. "Uh..." Dawson looked about and saw his three quarters empty jar of cheese puffs by the roll of paper towels he used for napkins and reached over. His face scrunched with the effort, but with a stretch he was able to nab the roll.

"Closest I got right now, sawry." Grunting, he offered them by nudging one end against her arm, then tilted his head back against the beanbag chair and closed his eyes. Even covered them with his hand for good measure.

She took the roll, and ripped off a few pieces. He really wasn't looking, so when she peeked she could tell that it was safe enough to uncurl, and slowly wipe her eyes clean of the raccoon circles that sobbing with makeup had created. Of course, this left her virtually makeup free save for her lips, and she stared at all of the makeup on the pieces of paper towel in her hands, as if she was staring at her own skin falling off.

"Ugh." She grumbled, crumpling them up into a ball. "What a mess."

It wasn't clear if she was referencing the makeup, or herself. She closed her eyes, and took long, deliberate breaths. Eventually, an exhale held the words "Thank you." within them, before her head lolled against him.

It wasn't clear to her whether that helped, or not. But she'd tried.

He remained dutifully blind until he felt her lean against him, at which point he first peaked through his fingers, made sure it was safe, and then peeled his hand away to rest at her back and stroke again. It was hard for him to not just go back to cradling Maebe tightly again.

"Ain't a thing, hun," he protested pleasantly, but it was hard to hide how good he felt to hear those words. "Glad I could help. Messy's fine anyway, I toldja I was used t'that, too. You feelin' a lil' better?"

"Maybe." She rubbed her face with her hands, and when she looked at them again, they came off clean. She supposed that meant the makeup had been successfully taken care of. "I don't know what better feels like. I don't know how I'm supposed to feel." And she never had. Even at the height of her relationship, at the highest of moments, Maebe still had little to no idea how to truly feel. So she guessed that this was helping, and had to make do with that.

"Still tired though. Actually no. More tired." Her head hadn't been able to move from the resting place against his chest, and it was feeling heavier by the second. "What little energy I had, just got used up. I am a ball of nothingness."

It was strange to even glance at her naked face, but he made sure he didn't stare. Dawson tilted his head in thought, considered something for a moment, and then snapped his fingers. "Sleepy," he concluded, looking proud of himself for figuring it out. "Sleepy's usually better. Means you got a lot taken out so now ya can rest n' recover. S'good fer ya."

He made to get up and still keep her in his arms, but Dawson immediately fell back down after an inch. "Welp. For a ball a'nothin', you sure weigh enough," he teased, hiding his wince behind a smile. "We'll getcha ta bed one way or another." He paused in thought, then attempted to hoist Maebe up enough to drag the beanbag across the ground through sheer leg power; it got them several inches before he dropped her with a more pronounced hiss of pain. "Slowly but surely..."

When he moved to rise, she fully expected him to lift her up with him. She went wide eyed when they fell down again, and let out a gasp at the mere idea that she weighed anything more than nothing. Was all of this trauma making her fat?! If she wasn't so exhausted, Dawson would have kicked her into an entirely new set of fears, but she couldn't keep her eyes open long enough to think about it. She felt herself moving, but didn't understand how until it stopped, and she finally managed enough strength to look.

The moment she realized what he was doing, her eyes snapped open, awake. "Dawson, you're injured. Geez. You could have just asked me to get up." He was about as stubborn as an ox, but then again, so was she. She got up, walked the few steps over to the bed, and then flopped face down on it with absolute dramatic intensity. A few seconds later, she finally turned to lay on her side, staring up at him with a mixture of worry and neediness.

"I feel like I should ask you to tell me a bedtime story. Maybe from that book you were reading."

He opened his mouth to protest—after all, she was the one who had been running around with a much heavier burden than he did with just carrying her to the bed, which he should have been able to at least do—but Maebe had already flopped down and his injuries thanked her. Wiggling in his seat, Dawson managed to push himself up with a grunt and sought out the book.

"Two things 'fore I start," he said as he grabbed it. "One: ya want me ta text anyone that yer safe here or somethin'? Two: Uh...d'you mind if that light stays on all night?" he asked more sheepishly, indicating the lamp by her. "F'it bothers you, I can move it away n' cover it up. It, uh...It just gets too dark in here in the night." Pitch black more like, as he has no windows.

He was actually going to read her from that novel.

Maebe turned her head and let out a snort of laughter into the pillow, before returning to look at him again and shaking her head. But the mention of the light tensed her, and she pushed herself up to her elbow and stared at the lamp with flickers of emotion almost visible in her eyes. "Please don't turn the light off." She said, her voice quiet and legitimately fearful. "I can't sleep in the dark."

She couldn't anything in the dark, if she were honest. Move, speak, breathe, etc.

"We always slept with the light on." She mumbled, her body slowly unwinding again as she pushed down against the pillow. The mention of 'we' had the light in her eyes blown out like a candle, and the exhaustion sunk in immediately after, mercifully shutting them closed.

There was a sorrowful sympathy in his eyes at her answer, a knowledge of years of deep anxiety about the shadows and visions that plagued all hunters. "Never could either. Light won' ever turn off here," Dawson promised quietly. "I gotta have a steady supply a'bulbs all the time, n' I get hell fer the electric bill or whatever, but it's a small price t'pay. Don' worry, darlin'."

He registered the we but continued moving as if he hadn't. Book tucked under his arm, he nudged several bean bag chairs together by the bed, threw a blanket over them, then grabbed a second one and a pillow for good measure before finally settling down. Maebe looked tired enough that he doubted she needed any story, which was something of a relief; this particular book was rife with romantic passages of all sorts he did not feel would be of the best timing to read aloud right now or, well, any time.

"You sure you don' want me t'let someone know?" Dawson asked again a little worriedly, taking her silence on the subject previously as an answer.

Without opening her eyes, Maebe shook her head once, answering him once more with silence. No one was worried about her that cared; Cami had no reason to worry at that moment, and Otto - the only person who had even glimpsed at the danger of the moment - made it clear how he felt. Crystal clear.

Once Mimsy told her sister what Maebe had said, she was sure that Cami would feel the same, as well.

Dawson was right; Maebe didn't actually need much of a bedtime story to fall asleep in that moment. But now that he'd made it clear he was going to attempt it, she stubbornly refused to drift off until she at least heard him start to try and read a romance novel. That, she thought, was worth staying up for.

"Awlright." It saddened him, but he did say she could keep her secrets.

Nestling into a better position, Dawson tugged his cap off (his cowlick all but springing up immediately upon freedom), set it atop the water bottle like it was a stand, and cracked the book open. He cleared his throat and began to read.

"Price of Passion, by Susan Napier. Chapter one. Oh boy...

‘WHAT the hell d'you want?’

Kate Crawford kept the polite smile pinned t'her lips as she confronted the man who'd wrenched his front door open with an impatient snarl.

Framed in the doorway he 'ppeared intimidatingly large, his broad shoulders n' muscled chest strainin' the seams of a well-worn grey tee shirt, scruffy blue jeans encasin' his long, power-packed legs." He was doing his best not to snicker. "His short-cropped hair stood up in untidy spikes..."

She was asleep by "power-packed legs".
