"You are the obvious choice and so, for now, with not only my support, but that of many of my pridesisters', you are Umholi." There was no need for congratulations. After all, this was a matter of the pride's survival. "I assume you do not need an explanation of what an Umholi is, or what we, the pride, expect from you." Ukwazi's tail swayed gently beside her as her eyelids fell while her chin rose. Offering no smile now, no grin, she looked to Andhaka.

Though some would disagree or even protest. A majority were for him and that's all that mattered. The pride needed their Umholi and even if it was short-sighted, the lionesses could always revoke their support and his title in turn, and chase him off should he prove to be too out of control. It was a safety net that the pride had never truly needed to rely on, but it was there.

The outburst from the Umama came as a surprise, but it hardly unexpected given the circumstances and even Ukwazi figured there would be a few more to come now that Simo had rather loudly proclaimed her opposition of Andhaka becoming an Umholi. Snorting, she turned her head to silently watch Simo jerk up from her spot and throw up dirt as she ran from the rest.

Simo did not need to support Andhaka as an Umholi as far as Ukwazi was concerned. He already had more than enough other lionesses to do that for her.

[OOC Information]

There will be one more post from me later tonight, around 10PM CST. That will be my final post for this RP.
As for the second prize. It will be revealed when I roll for the winners.

Jagazi made a face at Isasa. What was wrong with those sisters? They were so... stuck up. Bleh... Just because they happened to have an Abaholi for a father. One that wasn't even Abaholi anymore, since he was probably dead, so they had nothing to be stuck up over anymore.

She hadn't considered cubs at all when deciding on her vote. Small cubs could be cute and all, but the thought of having her own... Kind of icky. Her mother and aunt had explained where cubs came from, in some detail, and it didn't make her eager to experience it soon. Jagazi had a feeling her opinions on the matter would seem very cub-like so she kept them to herself.

---

Kokumo eyed Nolaka. "Interesting," was all she said. Nolaka backing the red pelted Inselelo made even more sense now. With Andhaka as the leading male, the cubs in her belly would be seen as even more important. The orange female knew what it meant to be daughter to an Umholi. It meant never really going hungry, and it meant a certain amount of respect. Smart.

She'd await the result of Nolaka's "experiment" before deciding if she should go down that road. Who knew? Andhaka might be gone in a couple of moons, making his offspring Luzisi. Nothing was ever certain...

---

Buna watched Simo storm off with some surprise. The brown lioness wasn't very pleased with the development either, but not displeased enough to storm off. Her main issue with Andhaka was that he was new. She was all for making Luzisi know their place, and he had never done anything to make her dislike him more than usual. She hadn't liked Surtak at first, but after warming up to him she'd carried his cubs. Buna tended to grumble and complain, but if the collective made a decision she reluctantly learned to live with it. She was certain that she wouldn't carry red pelted cubs, but as she watched her daughter she wondered if there might be red grand cubs in her future. She did not like the look on Kokumo's face. She shook her head and looked the other way. Well, at least his mane was black.

Chastised by the look from the Umama, Dania pressed her ears back miserably. The conversation had suddenly seemed to fast-track into what she felt was a rushed decision. Though the younger lioness still had not really come to terms with the loss of both their Abholi and would have likely balked at any kind of decision regardless of the outcome.

When Simo suddenly burst out from her normally calm and collected manner, Dania gazed after her in shock, quickly growing worried as the lioness raced away, followed swiftly by the big male. Dropping her head back to the ground she whined softly, wanting to follow but too scared to do so. After all she wasn't a close confidante of the grey Umama, certainly not close enough to help with whatever had happened.

Curling her tail close and closing her eyes she nearly missed the result of the vote. Looking over at the red male she pressed her ears back again, torn between fear of the male, and a refusal to finally believe Gakere was gone.. "I do not. It is... not right... He did not fight..." Her words trailed off, thoughts all confused and jumbled up in her head so it was all a tight tangle. But it felt wrong.... Umholi were not voted to the rank. It just wasn't done.

Finally without a word to anyone, not even looking at Nolaka despite their near-argument, the small lioness simply stood. Turning her back on Andhaka and the rest of the gathering, she walked away, head low and tail limp.

As the Umama left, Isasa gave a slight snort. Let her refuse... She'd be without cubs for a long time coming with such an attitude. She then looked back to Ukwazi. "And what, pray tell, do we do about Jasiri? Let him finish his term as Inslelo, possibly sire another litter, and be challenged in his own time? Or elevate him to a temporary Abaholi?" She refrained from suggesting running him off. One less male at the moment was one less lion to protect them.

If the Inslelo-turned-Abaholi was surprised, Mhisani missed it as she watched the Umama leave, as well. She let out a quiet hm, then turned her ice blue eyes back toward Andhaka. She was ready to warn him about how tenuous his position was, but she held her tongue. It didn't feel like the right time anymore to antagonize the red-coated male. Her attention was drawn, instead, toward Isasa. "I say we let Jasiri stay until somebody challenges him... No sense running a perfectly good lion off, right?"

Zola could only let out a quiet sigh, settling next to her mother. She'd had a point... She knew her mother didn't like Andhaka, but he was that drink of dirty water when there was no other choice. Personally, being at that age when males began to catch her eye, Zola decided... She would wait for the rains to come back, as it were. She'd put up with his presence, possibly avoid Andhaka until either she got more used to him or he did something to wow her... And then go from there.

Andhaka had hardly expected Simosihle to approve, but he had not expected as dramatic a reaction as the one she displayed. He did not attempt to pacify or stop her, just watched and allowed her to get it out. He was not going to win her - or anyone else - over today, or tomorrow, or even by trying to. He would have to continue to be patient, and perform his duties well. Approval, hopefully, would come in time.

He dipped his head respectfully to Machozi before the other male followed after the Umama. "Thank you. Perhaps we will have a chance to speak further another time."

"Of course," he answered Ukwazi, with another dip of his head.

"Jasiri is welcome to stay as Inselelo as long as he can hold the position. I see no reason he should not." Andhaka had been largely indifferent to his fellow Inselelo; he did not dislike him, and they had co-existed without incident thus far.

Catching Dania's too-late objection, he offered, "I would, if there were anyone to fight."

Ukungcola watched as Simo left with her eyes still calm and tired. "He did not fight... But we need an Abaholi." That was good enough for her. He might not have won his way into the position traditionally, but it was the best option all things considered.

She flicked an ear towards Umama and Mhisani about the conversation concerning where Jasiri stood in all this but in the end sighed as her final remark. All that was left to do was wait and see what happened now. Andhaka would make a good Abaholi for the time being, and if he was bearable, tolerable or even likable then that was how it was to be. So long as the redpelts didn't catch wind of them being without Umholi then the brown lioness had decided everything would work out nice.

Ukungcola then took her leave. She offered no goodbyes or smiles but turned around her standing body and left as she had deducted the meeting had concluded.

They would be okay. Everything was going to work itself out, she decided.

User ImageThola cackled wildly. How fun! She knew there'd be backlash from the vote. Oh yes, the vulture would definitely be staying to see what further drama unfolded. She prayed for a fight or two, maybe some more snarling and arguing. The vulture wanted something exciting.
Of course, Thola also wanted some food. And since she had no lion to scout with at the moment, it seems she would have to take to the skies to scavenge as usual. No matter. The events of the day had worked up her appetite for rotting meat. Maybe she would spy over this group red pelts that neighboured the Bonelands. Surely with a large group such as that, they would have plenty of kills lying around. And Thola was plenty fast enough to dodge and angry lion's claws.
The bird took off with a squawk, leaving behind a mess of feathers.

User ImageEsasile had been quiet during the proceedings. She was, in general, on the quieter side. The female didn't believe in wasting breath on saying things unnecessary, and for the most part, all that had been discussed were simple observations and petty squabbles.
Like Simo, Esasile was older. She had seen much of the pride's history, seen it's changes. The disappearance of Gakere and Surtak had her just as worried as her sisters, though Esasile didn't show it. It was never productive to wear one's heart on one's sleeve.
The female had been quite shocked at the lingering stigma against Jasiri's mane. The simple fact that there had been light-maned Inselelo proved that mane colour could not determine one's fighting ability. Perhaps the disappearance of their Abholi had her sisters clinging to the traditional ways for the comfort of something familiar. And though Esasile was a proponent of change...this was not the change Esasile wanted to see. Some of the old ways should remain. Though Andhaka had proven himself worthy of Inselelo, he had simply been given the title of Umholi out of necessity.
She had not voted because, quite simply, there had been no other option. It was pointless voting when there was no other course of action. "While I am reluctant to support Andhaka being appointed through such means, he is right. There is no one to fight. He will, in time, have the chance to prove himself worthy of the position. We have but one path in order to stay strong in the eyes of the red pelts, and that is to follow Andhaka, whether you like him or not. As soon as another path reveals itself...I'm sure that river can be waded once we get it." She announced. Esasile did not particularly like Andhaka, especially his treatment of the Lusizi and the Ahluke, seeing as her dear son Dwa was one. But Esasile hated those thieving, arrogant, entitiled red pelts even more, and she would sooner die than have their lands be taken over by them. Of course, having a red pelt himself did not help Andhaka gain favour in Esasile's eyes, but that was just her own form of colour-bias.
"However, there is one matter we have not addressed. Gakere and Surtak lead us side by side, and we were prosperous and strong under their partnership. Should the opportunity arise, do we appoint another Umholi? Or do we limit ourselves to one?" One that many in the pride, like Esasile, did not fully support.

"I agree Mhisani. Let him stay, at least for now. If Jasiri's presence is enough to calm some worries about change, I personally don't see an issue with allowing him more time among us. With him gone, we'd only have one male defending us and one less male to sire cubs. He's proven enough to do those In time, another male will beat him in a fight and replace him, but that time hasn't come yet."

Ukwazi's attention turned to a new voice that she knew belonged to Esasile. Frowning, she watched the older lioness. "I also agree. There were no competitors for Andhaka to challenge and in theory, he has already beaten Jasiri by beating Nguvu." She paused, sighing heavily as her shoulders and head fell. At least they had some answer to their problem at least. "The last thing we need are the red-pelts wandering into these lands in conquest, looking to expand their borders and seize our land and our water." The question of a dual-leadership did cause Ukwazi's head to jerk back up to look to Esasile. "Hm. I suppose that is for Andhaka to decide in time. Perhaps he will work better, and us in turn, to have a single Umholi and a number of Inselele beneath him instead of an Abaholi."

The tan lioness stood suddenly, her posture returning to its usual confident stance as she held her head up. "Time will tell though and the night is upon on, sisters." Bowing her head, Ukwazi turned and left the group behind with Ukushisa, silently following behind.

((Ukuthula is naming this litter in Zulu, after conventionally impressive animals. The two named already are Umkhombo (rhinoceros) and Uheshe (falcon). She's a tough, brash, and occasionally even mean lioness who's got a bit more brawn than brain. Their grandmother, Wodi, is actually tougher (and smarter), but less unpleasant, though she tends to be rather sassy and feisty. Physically, the cubs' maternal line runs small: Wodi is petite and pretty as a result of Mistweaver blood, while Ukuthula is slightly larger than her mother but very burly thanks to Surtak.))
