Aina had a hard time containing the depths of her excitement as Cruz and Cesc both presented Ethiriel with their presents. With one hand holding onto Duncan's, she bounced and gasped happily at every new surprise revealed, her head craning up to look up at the older man to make sure he had seen the presents, too: a book, pretty seashells, a necklace, all of which made Ethiriel seem brighter than ever. Birthdays, she was convinced, had a very potent kind of magic to them.
When the tea set was revealed, like the rest of the guests, Duncan and Aina were ecstatic-- Duncan in his quiet way, with raised brows and pleasant laughter, and Aina in her loud way. The tiny Frei gasped with all the rush of joy contained in her and tugged fervently at Duncan's sleeve, and Henry's little suggestion continued to spark her enthuse.
"Tea set, tea!" Aina called out-- with a small chuckle, Duncan picked the pomegranate Frei up into his arms to help calm her. She had much more to say on the matter, but at Cruz's question, she arched her head to glance at Henry with a curious expression.
"More gifts? Cake? You eat cake on birthdays," she said, with all the certainty in the world-- she was told, after all, that without eating the cake, one couldn't age at all. She looked back at Duncan and nudged his shoulder with her hands, "Can we eat cake but it's not our birthdays? 'M hungry..."
"Of course, cakes are meant for sharing. But I'm afraid you can't eat cake quite yet, Aina. When you're a little more grown, like Cesc," Duncan glanced up at Ethiriel and Henry with a smile, tone jovial, "How else should we celebrate the occasion, then? A song, perhaps?"
"A song...!"

Henry's brother, who had thus far situated himself on the couches in the living area and out of most guest's field of awareness, spoke up. "Yeah, are we even doing anything with the cake since we went to the trouble of sitting in rush hour to get it?"
”The cake!” Henry exclaimed, his excitement almost mimicking Aina’s. ”Of course, the cake! It’s the best part!” he said with a wince, speaking faster than he could think. ”Hopefully soon you all can enjoy some cake… but Ethiriel gets to make this wish!”
”Wish?”
”Wish!”
Oh, that was right -- Gabe had warned her about this. It was all so new and confusing to the poor Frei, never having even a single birthday, a cake or a wish to go with it -- it slipped her mind.
”What do I wish for?”
”Anything you want!”
Well, that certainly didn’t make it easy.
Ethiriel thought it over as Henry bounced over to the table to fetch the cake that he had sent Gabe and the Raevan in question out to get; it looked amazing! It was very simple, probably on Gabe’s part given the birthday girl couldn’t even see it, and it smelled of thick buttercream rather than whipped, with a hint of chocolate marbling. He was sure Ethiriel got to enjoy the smell enough, even if she couldn’t partake.
”You just have to make a wish in your head and blow out the candles!”
As Henry spoke, he pulled out a thin lighter from his pocket and began to light the three, slender candles atop the cake.
In her head? Easy enough, but what to wish for? She had never sat down and tried to think of something so frivolous. Wishes couldn’t come true, could they? Even if done on a silly cake with silly candles? As the cake was brought to her, Ethiriel could vaguely see the fire that crowned the wax sticks – well, at least that was accommodating.
”Everybody sing! Once we’re done you can blow out the candles!”
As Henry led the chorus, Ethiriel kept mulling over potential wishes in her head. Now that she thought of it, it was quite obvious what she wanted.
Independence.
”—happy birthday to you! Blow out the candles!”
And she did.
