"Did you ever wonder if stupidity is a requirement?" Nash questioned and whistled, Harbinger taking flight at the noise zipping above, not getting close to the ground or the hatchings, but providing a aerial view. "Want to be a dragon rider? Lose all common sense." He sighed, scrubbing up in redwort, head half tilted, eyes slightly glazed over.

Harbinger was well trained, flying in loops over the sands, well above the chaos but still relaying information. "Facial injury." He sent an order and gave a soft noise as Harbinger relayed it. "Going to have Harper fly circles above the sands."

He was going to have such a headache. Nash sighed. So much for an uneventful hatching.

With his toy gone into splinters, Lightning Flash darted off, carrying the remains of Bereck’s cane in his jaws, skipping and darting at this candidate and that, presumably with the intent of putting the willies into them. His progress through the group always had a goal, though, and finally he reached his target and dropped the cane, his posture every bit a sign of draconic pride.

"I've more than wondered," Bereck muttered as he too disinfected his hands and forearms; he had in fact once - young, angry, drunk - written a mock essay on the subject of dragon candidate stupidity, it was probably still among his papers somewhere though he could not longer recall the exact content. "Hopefully we can just clean the wound, bind her face up and send her back out, so long as she hasn't lost the eye she could still Impress." Stitches would have to wait until later. "Help her sit down on the stool there if she needs it, then we can see what needs doing."

Qyprenna didn't waste any time. She sat down where Bereck wanted her to go, and then looked toward him with a calm expression. "I'll be fine," she told him slowly taking her hand off of the wound. It had been bleeding, but the flow of blood seemed to have slowed down between her walk from where she was to where she sat currently. "It's just a scratch, mostly." A shrug followed this, and the young woman couldn't help but look back out at the Sands where the other candidates were. It seemed Lighting Fast had found his partner, and that was pretty exciting!

She just wanted to get cleaned up, and then go back out there with the rest of the candidates! A simple scratch wasn't going to hold her back, no sir!

"Least we don't have to worry about her fussing about her hair," Nash replied and finished his disinfection routine, clean up to his elbows and moved to the front of the healing area, ready assist Qypreena when she came into the area.

The shave scalps was the one thing that he could agree with, it certainly would make bandaging the foolish child easier. And it seemed she didn't need help, though she was such a foolish thing, to think that a scratch across the eye was nothing serious.

Could have blinded her. He shifted, joining Bereck and decided to assist as needed.

He was surrounded by idiots! Cai threw his hands up in the air in disgust as yet another candidate seemed to loose all sense of self preservation and dove to retrieve the dragonets plaything. You look away for one second. This is why Cai never liked children... or people their own age... and a good portion of those older than them too.

With the candidates shuffling around because of the disturbance and the continued harassment by the baby blue (of which Cai tried very hard to avoid) they made their way through to one of the tallest of their number, standing beside Jemi and brushing her hand in their 'this is as much PDA as you'll get out of me so hush' manner reserved just for her and Wen. "Was there a class I missed on sheer stupidity? I'm pretty sure that's never come up as a Thing To Do in Venk's lectures. Correct me if I am wrong." The redhead's frosty gaze shot towards Qyp as she at least took herself to be tended by the healers. Who she'd have to apologize to at some point. It was her fault his cane was snapped in two now.

~......~

Page gasped theatrically and leaned forward in his seat as one of the candidates stepped in between the two hatchlings and got herself mauled in the efforts. In his lap Issi squeaked in protest to her bonded's clenched fingers. "L'thor! Her face!"

"I will be the judge of that young lady," Bereck replied, his voice firm and deeply unimpressed but not unkind. Stepping away from the table in order to get in front of her was awkward to say the least and he ended up putting a hand on the injured girl's shoulder to steady himself. "Nothing serious," he muttered as he inspected the wound, "nothing serious indeed! Half an inch more and you'd had no eye, and then what would you do?"

Shards, and this over a material object. His material object. He hadn't asked her to do it but he felt a pang of guilt all the same.

"Well you'll have a handsome scar at any rate," he said after a moment, straightening up with his lips pursed flat. "Nash, would you deal with this? You know the drill; numbweed, redwort, and bind, just be careful of how you place the dressing over her eye with the lid like that." He knew that Nash didn't need telling but he said it anyway partially just to be sure and partially because there were less experienced healers present who ought to hear what needed to be done and observe a nasty little would dealt with calmly and efficiently. He could have dealt with it himself of course and dictated aloud what he was doing and perhaps usually would have but sharpened pain had in turn sharpened his powers of delegation, he wanted to go back to perching on the table.

"You'll need to come in for stitches once the Hatching is over girl," Bereck added as he took a hitching step back over to the table. "No excuses, no delays, if we don't see to it in good time it might start healing of its own accord, and then we'll have to cut it apart again if you ever want a functioning eyelid again." Shardit all, why had she done that? If he'd kept a better grip on his damned cane this wouldn't have happened.

"If there was, I missed it as well." Jemi replied and took the moment to curl her pink around Cai's fingers and grinned. "Would have been a fun class, just to know who was an shafting dimglow and who wasn't." She glanced up, watching the skimming green and pointed up with her chin. "Seems we got a watcher since that fiasco... sort of clever."

----------------

B'ren came in late, to late to see the first eggs hatch but not late enough to miss the mauling. Why was there always a mauling? He shook his head and trotted down the stands to find his classmates.

Or wing mates, he wasn't picky.

Hazmath landed and trilled at the hatchlings, the pale blue curling up.

“Sir,” Nash replied, a slightly crooked smile tracing his mouth as he gathered the supplies and laid them out, looking over the wound. He frowned slightly taking in the length and dabbed his thumb in numbweed, sliding it up aside the wound but not in the gash. He took care, stopping an inch below and continuing above the eyebrow to the forehead. He prodded slightly, watching her eyes before dipping a clean cloth into redwort and started gently dabbing the wound from the other side that he had numbed.

“I hope this is exciting enough for you, this hatching,” he said dryly, cleaning slowly.

Oh Shaff. It had gone wrong enough. Poecai made a grab for the girl to drag her back, away from the dragons. “Yes it was, now get your sharding a** out of there.” she snapped, but she already was and Poecai nudged her towards the healers, backing away from the green and towards the crowd of candidates.

"It certainly has been," she commented to Nash, unable to keep from smiling. It was a small smile, slightly saddened by the fact that everyone thought she was totally stupid for trying to go and get Bereck's cane. She shrugged after that, and turned her attention toward the Masterhealer and the words that he spoke to her. "I'll be sure to come right away." There was no way she was going to hesitate when it came to her injury. If he told her to do something, she was going to do it. She had already screwed up enough, and she felt kind of bad for it. Yet at the same time, in the back of her mind, Qyprenna knew she was staying true to herself by trying to help.

"...I'm sorry, sir. About your cane." This reply was quiet, almost whispered. She cast her gaze downward after that, not bothering to look at Bereck or Nash. They probably thought she was foolish, just like the rest of them. She wanted to say she was just trying to help, but the words didn't come. All that followed was disappointed silence, and the desire to get back out there on the Sands. She wanted to be near the dragons.

Cai gave Jemi's pinky a squeeze, letting the digits remain entwined between their bodies "More like to see who we should avoid standing next to come Hatching time." Cai's lips twitched in a smile, glancing up at Jemi before following her gaze towards the firelizard circling overhead. "I suppose every little twitch will be reported now to someone. I wonder who." Venk's firelizard was a rather chubby little brown, not the green stalking them from on high.

~........~

Ja'line stuck a couple fingers between her teeth and let out a whistle while she waved her other hand high overhead. "Oy! B'ren! Over here!" After graduation she didn't get to see as much of her former fellow weyrling anymore. Between sitting at separate tables during meals, and most of their time being taken up between drills or missions in their own wings it was a wonder riders got to see anyone outside of their wingmates. Well, here and now Ja'line was determined to see one of her old friends. Sanu get Hazmath to make B'ren sit with me.

The stocky green snorted at turned towards the pale blue who as usual was making a noisy fool of himself. You would say that if they were baby tunnelsnakes. Mine is trying to get the attention of yours. She nodded her head in the direction of their riders.

He was sorry too but it would pass and it would still be his cane - the cane Alina had given him so many turns ago - with a new shaft on it. Bereck sighed slightly and shook his head. "Don't be, and don't do anything like that ever again. No object is worth risking your life over, there are more canes in the world but only one of you." Whoever she was - there were seldom introductions right off in his line of work - but exactly who she was wasn't actually important, what was important was that she was, was a person, and had that dragon been a little more vicious she could easily not have been.

Nash worked carefully, cleaning any lingering dirt and sand he could see. He directed beading solution into the wound, squeezing the cloth slowly to do a simple irrigation, the best he could do without a funnel and gave a nod. “Well, I’ve seen worse.” He admitted. “Still, a cane isn’t worth your life. It can be replaced.”

He measured out bandages and trimmed them before starting to slather them with honey. “I’m going to have you close that eye and keep it closed. We’ll see about getting you something more comfortable after the hatching.”

Vosin and Tiaeth

She'd just settled into what she'd expected to be a quite dinner. Truth be, she still wasn't quite awake yet, and her twin had had to push her to get up for breakfast on time. Vos took several deep gulps of klah and almost scalded her tongue severely. So hot, but so desperately needed! It was her bronze sitting outside that finally got her attention.

While I really hate to interrupt there is a pressing matter that needs to be attended to. His voice was filled with humor as the candidates started to get up and leave along with everyone else.

What? Straight to the point, she wasn't ready for games this early in the morning.

He snickered in the back of her mind then hummed. The eggs are hatching Vos. Surely you want to watch? He showed an image of himself waiting just outside so she could join him.

"Jumpin' shipfish! The eggs are hatching!" The red-headed woman looked around with a sheepish grin. Probably the last to know. It was time to see what kind of dragons a blue could sire. Vos didn't have much hope of a bronze being in the clutch. "Want a ride with Tiaeth and me Ves?" Regretfully she left her hot plate of food, and went out to meet the bronze. Settled into her accustomed place on his back, the bronze launched into the air and headed to the hatching sands. Tiaeth settled them with a good spot to watch the hatching. Vos moved to stand between his forelegs. "Eh a blue first." Not really a shocker there. "Have you seen Esre?

It is a healthy, and happy hatchling Vosin, he lightly rebuffed his rider. Tiaeth hummed his approval as a handful of blues and greens hatched. He watched as a blue stole something from one of the humans on the sand's sidelines, then a green fight over it. At least they are lively.

Drudge Kialynka

She was diligently scrubbing pots. With so many people here, they'd needed extra hands in the kitchens. Kia found if she was sneaky enough about it, she could sometimes snatch tidbits from the platters as they came back. A humming sound brought her onto high alert. She glanced around the kitchen and decided the other drudges weren't doing it. The high people of the weyr? No they were all getting up and leaving too. Most with breakfast uneaten? Her eyebrows jumped up as she realized she'd heard that humming once before. Yes it was a dragon hatching!

The teen remember what she'd done last time. The buckets of chunked meat had been ready for days in preparation. With a glance at the head cook she headed to the storage room to grab two and head to the hatching sands. The young were ravenous once they Impressed, and it let her get a good look at them without having to deal with idiots in the stands. She carried the buckets to the waiting tables and peered around. Looked like a handful of blues and greens had hatched thus far. With the brief pause to critically examine the fumbling hatchlings before she turned and went back for more meat. Thirty-two baby dragons were going to eat a lot of all hatched properly.
