Finally.
"I do." He agreed easily, setting the perfectly fine cake pan on the oven top, and then set the alarm again, this time for ten minutes. "Don't touch it until the timer goes off. Put icing on it, enjoy." Then, looking around the kitchen, he added one more thing:
"Have fun with the dishes."

Oh joy. Birthday dishes. Then again, technically his birthday wasn't for a few more hours or so, anyway. He could distract himself from the intoxicating smell of hot cake by doing some dishes.
He gave the mess a heavy look, huffing and then looking to Ripley.
"Thanks." For the dishes. The cake. The help. Let Ripples figure it out.

"You're welcome." He smiled, a brief thing that faded as slowly as it formed, and he reached out to ruffle Otto's hair. "Happy Birthday, you brat." It was affectionate as he could get, and he left it at that - literally leaving Otto, since the teen hadn't asked him to stay.

He could pretend he hadn't enjoyed the hair ruffling, but the fact of the matter was the stern man went out of his way to help him; and wished him a happy birthday. He let Ripley leave. Otto had plenty to do, and a cake waited to be iced and eaten very soon.
