Again She Visits
Her hand twitches to summon Tenebrae, but she resists. It would be letting Jack win. Her face burned, the red skin showing so. She could resist.
"Went to the sun run. Got a new high score." Her answer was vague, but an honest capture of what happened. She didn't include why she had pushed herself so hard, because she didn't know.
Her eyes have somehow hardened. Perhaps Astra granted her new sight. "Jack." It is exasperated, tired, but the growl remains when she says it. Chel was keeping herself together with strings.
In a way, Jack and Chel were having their own conversation.

Saturday
She appears in the middle of a forest. It seemed simple enough. Tall conifers towered above her. The ground is damp, and the seedless vasculars indicate a wet climate. She shivers lightly. Her coat was optimized for heat, not cold.
She wanders the forest for a bit, chasing mist as it hits the sunlight. It's pleasant. She hasn't gone hiking for a while.
When she wakes up once more, it is morning and Chris is already up, rummaging for cereal. Had she been asleep at all?

Again She VisitsThere was a two second pause as he took this in. The annoyance aura grew palpable. He closed the gap between him and the bed, and then more, leaning in and invading her personal bubble (if Chel had ever had such a thing), planting his free hand by her leg to anchor himself. It's the usual disapproving look he wears, but there's something else there that's hard to identify because Jack always is guarded against something. "Do you remember what I told you the last time you were in here?" he asked. The bag of ice is within easy reach now that he's close. His grip on it didn't even look particularly tight.

She wanted to touch him. It burned the way he touched her so casually and leaned in. Did he think about it too, or had he already burned such thoughts from his mind? Was it so easy for him? Her hand twitched, she imagined touching his cheek softly or putting her hand on the one on her leg and squeezing.
Instead she lay ragged, a doll that was close to breaking. Jack was cruel. She knew this.
She was grateful to Nevada for taking her tears. She had none left to give now. The well had run dry.
"To shut my mouth and to not complain when you ask things of me," she said weakly. She didn't even reach for the ice.

Again She VisitsThere was a silence where his usual snicker or scoff would have gone. This was Business and Work Jack with Normal Jack's scowl. "I told you I was tired of seeing people in here who didn't have to be," he said, and maybe it's a nice change to hear how clearly disappointed he was because at least he was emoting. "Who in fact shouldn't be. The Sun run, fine. But if you're up against two students you can't take, why didn't you just pendant out?" A faint sneer appeared. "Or was that too 'cowardly' for you?"

It doesn't feel nice to hear the disappointment in his voice. It is yet another failure she adds to her never ending tally.
She didn't speak for a while. She was working up the courage to ask him to leave. But she was supposed to act normal, and normal Chel wouldn't forsake Jack's company.
Why didn't she pendant out? She was unsure. Perhaps she was holding out for the creatures to turn around. Perhaps there had been no reason to return without result. It seemed and amalgam of these two was probable.
"Please-" It is a strange phrase, one that she doesn't use with serious connotation often. The word drops, fading into whatever sentence she was going to say next. She hangs her head. "I'll do better."

Again She VisitsHis gaze lingered and flickered between her and her new scars, but the ice was dropped into her lap as a reward. Good girl. This time he'd believe her, if only because Ian had made a similar promise and had done well by it so far. (He wants to know what she would plead him to do, lean in further and raise his brows and ask: Or what?) "I swear, someday one of you will have to come in," he said briskly as he straightened up, "and I will just keep on walking." Like that was a genuine threat to be mindful of.

He should know by now that Chel would never be capable of keeping her promise.
Jack straightened up and she could feel him slipping away from her. Her hand slapped down to the one on her leg. The grip is tight. Don't leave me.
It lightens. She releases Jack from her keeping. Her hand is trembling, but she pulls it away and uses the ice as an excuse to keep her hand preoccupied once more. She smiles as if to say, got you, didn't I?
"Surprised you didn't see the scars n' run," she said lightly. A joke. Jokes were normal.

Again She VisitsThe corner of his mouth briefly quirked up at the contact. Little successes. And then it was gone just as fast, back to garden variety snark. Maybe it had been dreamed up. " Please." Mocking in more than one way and back to normal. "I've seen worse than your measly little scratches in here, Craft," he said with a slight roll of his eyes. "You'll be fine."

Snark felt so much more relieving than this strange tension between them.
"Kinda sad I didn't lose the eye. Could've shared pirate tips with Finn n'- other people with eyepatches." She grinned. The idea of learning to fight with one eye from Shun was appealing, but not worth the incredible steep cost.
She looked up to Jack, reaching over to her juice box once more. "Just means I can do a badass Azog impression." She breathed a little easier now. Running head first into a conversation with Jack after such an incident was sloppy and unattractive, but they were making it work. She hadn't yet had time to face how she felt about her scars, but Jack was making it easier.

Again She Visits"You'd be a shitty archer if you only had one," he said with a scoff. "Depth perception and all. Finn's lucky because all he has to do is cover people and stab, even idiots can't get that wrong." He pushed back the bangs that had fallen forward and sighed. "Do I even want to know who Azog is?"

It made her think of that lady in the desert. "Your hair looks so sexy pushed back. Cady, will you please tell him his hair looks sexy pushed back?"
"Good thing Tensy ain't just a bow then," Chel chirped proudly. She loved her weapon, yes she did.
Tenebrae was silent, but she could hear his satisfaction in the silence nonetheless.
She took a long sip of her juice box again. It was a wonder this thing hadn't run out. "Azog? He's the troll dude from the Hobbit. You seen Lord of the Rings yet?" Azog was an orc chieftain, but Chel was not that big of a nerd.

"And good thing you pack a punch," he added, remembering how quickly she had knocked Ripley out. Sometimes it was easy to forget that Chel outranked him and had the power to match--mostly because he didn't like thinking about it.
"No, I haven't. AK bugs me about it every once in a while. She climbed my back once and called me Treebeard," Jack recalled with a tiny shrug, "then talked about elven eyes or something. She also called me Groot once and that's, what, his brother or something?"

Compliments just made it worse.
"Abbi's got a good head then." She was curious about the AK nickname (Jack giving someone a non-insulting nickname?) and said, "Groot is Guardians of the Galaxy. We saw that while you were in the desert, remember?" She HAD texted him about it.
It was a gamble, but she said, "Come over some time this week. You get your choice of Mean Girls or Lord of the Rings." What she didn't inform him is that he would lose this bet either way. Mean girls was shorter, but it was Mean Girls. Lord of the Rings was far more up his alley (she imagined Owain would quite like it!) but it was three thousand years long.
So either way, she won.

Again She VisitsIt took him a moment, but he remembered. The dominating factors of that conversation had been Chel's tits and beings missed, after all. Not to mention movies like Lord of the Rings and Avengers and Guardians sort of blended together to him. Especially Guardians. There'd been like four different movies with that word in the title the past few years, Jesus. Jack tilted his head and considered the offer for a while. "Only if you don't do something stupid and make it three for three this week," he replied eventually. "I'll let you know when I'm free. Probably won't be until at least Monday." It was probably high time he turned himself less pop culture ignorant. Plus, that was the not being weird answer. "Are you going to cook for the occasion again?" he asked with a little more interest. "You mentioned tacos."
